During Ms. Baldinger’s presentation at the gala, “A Day in the Classroom,” she spoke about how early detection helped save the life of someone in the community. “I was proud to represent our district,” said Ms. Baldinger, who teaches health classes at Ames. “Through this partnership with the Maurer Foundation, we basically saved a woman’s life. We have a success story right here in Massapequa.”

Chiefs Show Force The Massapequa Chiefs varsity football team closed out the regular season with a win, much to the delight of a spirited crowd. Massapequa High School’s homecoming celebration on October 28th began with a parade through town and ended with a 33-7 win over PlainviewOld Bethpage. Each class designed a banner for the parade based on TV sitcoms with the seniors picking “Friends,” juniors selecting
“Seinfeld,” sophomores highlighting “Big Bang Theory” and freshmen choosing the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Students from numerous clubs marched along with district administrators and board of education members. The grand marshal was Town of Oyster Bay Parks Commissioner Joseph Pinto. Senior members of the football team, cheerleaders and Chiefettes kickline team honored their
parents by presenting them with blue and yellow flowers during a pre-game ceremony. During the halftime show, the marching band and color guard entertained the crowd with their “Star Wars” routine. There were also performances by the cheerleaders and kickline team. Matthew Camisa and Gabriela Ting were named the homecoming king and queen. Curiosities Stop and Jot is a technique used to improve reading comprehension and Jill Corson, a thirdgrade teacher at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, employs this method in her classroom.
She recently explained this strategy, which helps improve critical thinking. Students learned the benefit of stopping and thinking about what they are reading in their individually selected books. They use sticky
notes and markers to “grab a thought.” By writing down their observations, reactions, predictions and questions, students dive deeper into their reading, which ultimately creates a more meaningful and enjoyable experience.

Water has zero calories, and it can help you to feel full. If you’re ever hungry, try and drink a 16-ounce glass of water. Wait 10 minutes, and you’ll be surprised to find that the hunger generally subsides. Drinking water also helps you from overeating. Studies have shown that 30% of the time we feel “hunger,” it’s actually thirst. Take note the next time you feel hunger shortly after eating - did you drink water? Drinking water can also help speed up your metabolism. When we are hydrated, our livers function properly and metabolize stored fat into energy. Studies have shown that drinking 16 ounces of cold water can increase the metabolic rate by 30% for 90 minutes! How cool is that? Drinking plenty of water allows our body to decrease fluid retention. The body tends to retain fluid when we aren’t getting enough water. Subsequently, when we are hydrated, it allows our body to replenish fluids and regulate normally. Drinking water can also help reduce sagging skin and remove impurities, aiding with complexion. Who wouldn’t want that? Visit www.jayshealthyvibes.com to learn more about the wonders of water, some healthy recipes and more about my journey towards optimal health!

I love New York City. Unfortunately, my trips to the Big Apple tend to be few and far between; certainly not for lack of attractions to visit, but for the simple fact that time tends to slip away with the daily grind. Before you know it, months have elapsed, and all those fun day trips you had discussed with family and friends remain unexplored. Just last weekend, my friend and I headed into Manhattan for a seemingly standard matinee and early dinner, perhaps followed by dessert at the famous Serendipity, one of many tourist spots that I had yet to cross off my checklist. The day started out smoothly enough, as we landed orchestra seats to the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon, a play I had always regretted not seeing during its original run. The music, the story, the history behind it - all made for a beautiful and moving performance. During the intermission, a woman of Pakistani descent
seated next to us leaned over and exclaimed, “I love your country! And New York - it’s my favorite city of all!” She went on to explain that she was in town visiting friends from college, and had decided to spend several days in various cities across the United States. “Now that my children are grown,” she went on, “it’s my time to finally live, to experience all the things I never had the chance to do.” Delighted that this woman was so enthralled with our hometown, my friend and I thanked her for sharing this sentiment and, later, reflected on what a wonderful mentality she had, seizing the opportunity to travel and see the world all by herself, one city at a time, to truly appreciate those things that so many of us take for granted. Refreshed by the experience, we headed out to dinner, walking the approximately 30 blocks downtown to a rooftop restaurant I had discovered online. Once there, we realized we would be ordering our
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan dinner from a bar and eating it on tiny coffee tables near the ground, and subsequently decided to forgo this option for something a bit more civilized. Three restaurants, two hours and 7.75 miles later … we wound up about 30 blocks north, right where we had started our journey. What’s that they say about the best-laid plans? In the end, we had an enjoyable, albeit late, dinner, followed by a charming dessert at Serendipity, complete with pink painted walls and furniture straight out of Barbie’s dream house. Another one off the checklist. Another trip in the books. In light of last week’s tragic events on those very same city streets my friend and I had traversed only days before - the streets which welcome New Yorkers and visitors from all walks of life daily - it seems timely to appreciate this great city anew. For some, it is home; for others, a home away from home from Long Island to Pakistan, and everywhere in between.

Circus Comes to Lockhart under the guidance of skilled instructors. Fifth-graders spent additional time learning the skills in preparation for a performance before the rest of the student body that Friday. Each student was able to select one skill they wanted to master and perform. “It’s really great to see the hard work that they put in,” said physical education teacher Joe
Catalanotto. “It’s a really intense program and it’s awesome to see it all come together.” Mr. Catalanotto added that this is the 11th year that circus arts has been included in the physical education curriculum at Lockhart. He said it teaches the students about setting and accomplishing goals as they explore a new physical activity.

Analyzing Lit The CSI approach — color, symbol and image — has first-grade students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District analyzing literature in a different way. Students in Kimberly Kelly’s class are using the thinking routine to express their understanding of books in a nonverbal
way. Children think metaphorically by selecting a color, a symbol and an image that best represents a character in the story. Ms. Kelly learned the method while attending Project Zero Classroom training during the summer at Harvard University. The Massapequa School District and the Massapequa Community
Fund have partnered for several years to send teachers and administrators to this weeklong program, which is designed to create higher levels of student engagement in the classrooms. Ms. Kelly used the CSI approach during a study of books by author Kevin Henkes.
ANALYZING LIT - Birch Lane Elementary School teacher Kimberly Kelly read LEARNING TO JUGGLE - Lockhart Elementary School fifth-graders, from left, “Julius: The Baby of the World” to her first-graders, then had them use the CSI thinking Ryan Costanza, Ryan Brown and James BiFulco learned how to juggle during a circus method to explore the main character.
