• Keep kids clean. School-aged kids tend to carry home lots of germs, so when kids get home after a long day at school, make sure they wash their hands thoroughly and change into fresh outfits. In reality, being outside instead of congregating indoors with other sick people may decrease your risk of getting a cold. Don’t be afraid to go outside when the temperatures drop for fear of getting sick. Fresh air and exercise can be good for you. • Drink plenty of ﬂuids. Keeping your body hydrated will help ﬂush toxins out of your body, strengthening your immune system and

making it more capable of fending off colds. • Keep your distance. Did you know the cold virus can be shot up to three feet away when someone sneezes? The virus travels on the small droplets of saliva and mucus that get propelled from the nose and mouth of a sick individual. If you know someone is sick, stay as far away as possible and wash your

hands frequently, paying special attention to your fingertips. • Wipe down surfaces. The cold virus can live on surfaces for up to 24 hours. That means a sick person can easily transfer a virus by touching a computer keyboard or remote control he or she shares with others. Use disinfecting wipes or warm, soapy water to clean off

doorknobs, telephones, light switches, cabinet handles, and anything that is frequently touched around a home or business. • Let it out gently. Blowing your nose forcefully or pinching your nose to hold back sneezes can irritate nasal passageways and make them more vulnerable to infection.

Lifeline Screening

Helping Neighbors In Need Giving back at any age is a way of life for the Lots of Love Club, a team of community volunteers from Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community. The dozen or so members of the club, who reside in the skilled nursing and assisted living accommodations at Jefferson’s Ferry, regularly raise funds to make donations to various not for profit organizations in the surrounding communities. The club’s effort is twofold. First, the club holds a fundraiser on the premises of Jefferson’s Ferry, selling items that they have made to residents, employees and visitors.

They have, for example sold homemade baked goods, chocolate dipped pretzels and holiday ornaments. With the proceeds, the club then purchases items to donate to a local charity. “The Lots of Love Club is incredibly dedicated and resourceful,” said Jennifer Barrett, director of therapeutic recreation at the Bove Health Center at Jefferson’s Ferry, who works with the group. “They don’t let age or ability stand in the way of contributing to those in need. They raise every dime and spread their generosity around the community.” This month, Lots of Love is selling a uniform-clad

Operation Calling Card holds particular resonance with the club this year, as they recently lost one of the club’s founders, who was a survivor of Pearl Harbor. Ms. Barrett recently transported the Lots of Love Club to Walmart so that they could purchase baby care products such as diapers and wipes to donate to Riverhead’s Life Touch, which helps single mothers. The club has also donated boxes of food to the St. Gerard food pantry in Port Jefferson, made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a shelter in Bay Shore, and bought school supplies for Little Flower Children and Family Services. In summary, Ms. Barrett said, “The Lots of Love Club makes the spirit of holiday giving a year round commitment.”

it. Many people mumble through the lyrics because they never bothered to learn them. “Auld Lang Syne” is a Scottish composition that is well over 200 years old. Written by Robert Burns in the 1700s, the author never intended for the song to become a staple of the holiday season. It was originally a poem that was later put to the tune of a traditional folk song. The title translates roughly in English as “old long since,” or “long, long ago.” The song pays homage to times gone by and past experiences. The song has been performed at group jamborees, funerals and other special occasions all over the world, but it is best known for its affiliation with New Year’s festivities. The man behind that affiliation may be Canadian musician Guy Lombardo, whose band used “Auld Lang Syne” as a bridge between two radio programs during a live New Year’s Eve performance in 1929. Coincidentally, the song was played directly after the clock struck midnight, laying the groundwork for a New Year’s Eve tradition. Now “Auld Lang Syne” has forever been tied to wellintentioned resolutions and sappy slaps on the back. Despite selling millions of records, Lombardo became more famous for his New Year’s Eve song than anything else. Confusion over “Auld Lang Syne” remains to this day. It has been the butt of jokes in popular culture, even earning a nod in the movie “When Harry Met Sally.” Harry laments to Sally that he never quite understood what the song meant and ponders whether it is about forgetting about friends or remembering them. Sally sums it up by saying the song is simply about old friends. That is the interpretation many New Year’s Eve celebrants embrace as they toast to the new year and sing their hearts out.

Stony Brook University held its 17th Annual December commencement ceremony today in the newly renovated Island Federal Credit Union Arena, where 1,571 students had their degrees conferred. The new graduates, which range in age from 20–77, joined approximately 150,000 of their predecessors around the globe whose lives and work personify the Stony Brook University mission. During his commencement address, Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D., spoke about the tradition of graduation, the increasing value of a Stony Brook degree, and reinforced the competitive advantages and opportunities that Stony Brook graduates will have as they enter new chapters in their lives. “Recently some have questioned the value of a college degree, have stated

that a college education may not be worth its cost. Let me make it very clear. Your investment in your Stony Brook degree will be one of the best investments you (and your family) ever made,” said President Stanley. “In addition to earning higher wages,” he continued, “college graduates are more likely to find jobs than those who didn’t attend college. Your decision to attend and receive a degree from Stony Brook University means you are on a path towards a better life, and I congratulate you on that choice and your future.” President Stanley also encouraged students to keep in touch with mentors and professors who helped graduates achieve academic success. Christmas celebrants realize that the holiday season does not end on December 26th or even January 2nd. For many people, Christmas and New Year’s Eve are merely a prelude to the real celebration to come on Three Kings Day. Three Kings Day, or Día de los Très Reyes, is celebrated on January 6th to honor the wise men who visited and brought gifts to Jesus Christ. Also known as the Epiphany, the holiday marks the end of the Christmas season for many practicing Christians. Very little is known about the kings, or magi. These kings, who are only mentioned once in the Gospel of Matthew, are never named. The story says they hail from the “east” and are guided to the manger by a mysterious light in the sky. They begin a journey to bring gold, frankincense

and myrrh to the newborn king. Unbeknownst to many, the popular song “The 12 Days of Christmas” actually marks the 12 days following Christmas, ending on the Feast of the Epiphany, and not the 12 days preceding Christmas Day. Many traditions are associated with the Epiphany. Celebrants in Mexico serve Rosca de Reyes, an oval-shaped cake that symbolizes a crown. The cake has a small doll inside that represents baby Jesus and the hiding of Jesus from King Herod’s troops. Herod ordered his soldiers to seek out and murder all male infants born in Bethlehem in retaliation of the prophecy that a messiah would come and become the new King of Jerusalem. Roscas can be made with dried and candied fruits to symbolize the jewels that adorn real crowns. Whoever receives the

plastic doll in his or her slice of cake is expected to throw a party on Diá de la Candelaria (Candlemas Day), which occurs each year on February 2nd. Unlike in the United States, where gifts are typically exchanged on Christmas Day, much of the Latin community exchange gifts on the eve of January 6th. Puerto Rican children have been known to gather grass or straw in shoeboxes for the kings’ horses or camels. Some families display carvings and artwork of the three magi atop camels. Many celebrants participate in Three Kings Day parades and festivals. Family gatherings and parties that would rival other special holidays are common as well. A special meal consisting of corn tamales and hot chocolate may be served, while others may enjoy black beans, picadillo and yucca.
