On Sunday December 20, 2020, KiDS NEED MoRE hosted their 6th Annual HoLiDAY CHEER BUS ELF RiDE. Buses stocked with toydelivering elves drove to homes all over Long Island to make wishes come true for over 400 families coping with cancer and serious illness. “We started this event knowing that all parents feel the pressure to make
the season magical for their children, but when families are stressed with medical visits, painful treatments, and financial burdens, taking part in holiday festivities can be overwhelming, notes Melissa Firmes, President, KiDS NEED MoRE. “We wanted to make the experience not only wonderful for the children, but also as a gift to the entire family, and a

Consumers who want to support local businesses should know that positive product reviews can be a great and effective way to do just that. According to Business2Community.com, 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. In addition, customers are likely to spend 31 percent more on a business with “excellent” reviews, while 72 percent of consumers say that positive reviews make them trust local businesses more. The 2018 ReviewTrackers Online Reviews Stats report found that star ratings affect consumer behavior, as 80 percent of consumers say they trust 4-, 4.5- and 5-star ratings the most. The good news for consumers is that product reviews need not be long to be effective. ReviewTrackers notes that the average review is now roughly the size of a tweet and has gotten 65 percent shorter since 2010. Here is a closer look at some of the most popular traditions tied to New Year’s Eve, both domestically and around the world. Drinking champagne The use of champagne for celebrations is rooted in the Christian ritual of consuming wine during the Eucharist. In the year 496, a wine from the Champagne region of France was offered during the baptism of the Frankish warrior Clovis, according to the Champagne Committee of France. It then became customary for champagne to be used at religious events like consecrations and at coronations or soirees. Eventually the tradition became associated with secular rituals, such as celebrating the new year. Food People of Japanese
heritage might eat soba noodles on New Year’s Eve. The Toshikoshi Soba, which means “year crossing buckwheat noodle,” denotes the crossing from one year to the next. Nibbling the noodles represent traveling from one year to the next as well as letting go of the previous year’s regrets. In Spain, people gobble grapes to bring good luck in the coming year. The goal is to eat 12 green grapes during the 12 remaining seconds until the New Year. Those able to do so will have 12 months of good fortune. Dropping the ball Revelers have long watched the giant ball drop in New York City’s Times Square in person and on television. This tradition may be rooted in the custom of sailors using “time balls” to set their own timepieces while at sea. These chronometers were employed by using a spyglass to scan the harbor looking for balls that were dropped into the water at certain times, PBS reports. The first ball was installed in 1829 in Portsmouth, England. The Times Square ball was first used in 1907, according to the Times Square Alliance.
Making resolutions Historians trace the making of resolutions to the Ancient Babylonians. Citizens made spoken resolutions during their new year festival known as “Akitu.” This ritual required making an oath to the sitting or new king. Romans also swore oaths of loyalty to the emperor when the New Year started. Fireworks and noisemakers Fireworks are a big part of celebrations and are not to be outdone on New Year’s Eve. Fireworks were invented in the seventh century in China. According to Anthony Aveni, an astronomer and anthropologist at Colgate University, the fireworks were designed to ward off evil spirits. In cultures around the world, fireworks, banging drums and other efforts were used to chase away spooky creatures, especially during the transitional period that is the passing of the new year. Today fireworks and noisemakers are employed not for scaring away spirits, but rather to add to the revelry. New Year’s Eve traditions abound, and many of these annual customs have interesting origin stories.

Families Gather for Blessing of Christmas Trees and Ornaments at Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island Chapels Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island recently held a week-long series of Christmas Tree and Christmas Ornament blessing services at three of
its Cemeteries, Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram and Queen of All Saints Cemetery in Central Islip. Annually Catholic

Christmas ornaments to be blessed. With the pandemic came the need for new safety measures to be incorporated into the Christmas traditions that give peace and joy to thousands of families. Due to the pandemic and government occupancy and social distancing mandates, the special Christmas Trees and Ornament Blessing services were offered as an alternative to Christmas Masses. “This has been a challenging year for everyone and at Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island, it was very important to us that we offer families options to honor and remember their lost loved ones. The Christmas Tree and Ornament blessing services took place all week long and were celebrated by our Committal Deacons. We were pleased that these services were well attended,” said Richard Bie, CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. Dozens of families attended services and brought favorite Christmas decorations and special ornaments as tributes to
family members who passed during the last year and in previous years. Many ornaments were handmade and others included photos of those who have passed. Following the blessings of the Christmas Trees, families were invited to place these special momentos in remembrance of their loved ones on the trees. “The Christmas Trees decorated with these special ornaments are beautiful and a fitting way for families to pay tribute to their loved ones and remember the lives of those who have passed. We received many positive responses from families about our tree and ornament blessing services. Christmas celebrations are among the most well attended at the cemeteries, so we look forward to offering families a meaningful way to remember their loved ones again next year,” added Ann Andersen, Associate Director of Administration and Customer Sales and Service at Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. Ms. Andersen and staff helped to plan and prepare the chapels for services and attended them
as a gesture of support for the families. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island owns and operates four cemeteries across Long Island including Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram, Queen of All Saints Cemetery in Central Islip and Queen of Peace Cemetery in Old Westbury. Queen of Peace is the first new Catholic cemetery to open on Long Island in decades. The chapel at Queen of Peace Cemetery is under construction at this time and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2021. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is dedicated to meeting both the spiritual and physical needs of the more than 1.4 million Catholics across the Diocese of Rockville Centre, which encompasses Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, NY.
