How do you get kids excited about multiplication? Just add some competition to the mix. That’s how third graders at Unqua
Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are memorizing their times tables. Students in Samantha Berna’s class have been
welcoming their peers from other third grade classes for knockout math battles. Students compete oneon-one as a multiplication problem appears on the
electronic display board. The child who calls out the correct answer first stays in the competition. It keeps going until one class is fully knocked out.
The intra-hallway rivalry has continued as students have been expanding their number knowledge, recently learning multiplication tables up to 6. Ms. Berna uses digital flash cards through

Mathematicians Match Off For Multiplication Ascend Math. She said that the competitions have encouraged students to practice multiplication facts on their own at home, so they are ready for a challenge their third grade peers.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and Live Nation Inc. are pleased to invite park visitors to enjoy the Magic of Lights Spectacular within Jones Beach State Park. This amazing display of over 1M lights, runs at dusk (approximately 5PM) now through December 30th. Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance. Standard vehicles are $35 Monday – Thursday and $40 Friday – Sunday. If you would like to purchase your ticket in advance tickets are

Helping others has been a mission for students in the Massapequa School District for Thanksgiving. Berner Middle School’s student council, under the direction of advisers Denise Robertson and Teresa Ferreira organized a food drive, collecting hundreds of nonperishable goods to help local families. On Nov. 8, the student leaders
packed up the donations and traveled to Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Massapequa Park, where they helped stock the food pantry and learned about the impact the donations will have. The student councils at East Lake and Fairfield elementary schools also spearheaded food drives. At East Lake, nonperishable
food and paper goods were collected for the food pantry at St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa. Fairfield’s donations went to the Island Harvest food bank. Students from both schools made signs to hang around the buildings to promote the food drives. Lockhart Elementary School not only held a food drive, but fifth graders
also decorated paper bags with fall or Thanksgiving designs and made cards. The bags were filled with

Ethical Friends of Children, a free shop for Long Island children in need is prepared for cold weather. Volunteers sorted through recently donated clothing. The program has put out a call for children’s clothing for girls, sizes two to size 8; boys clothing 0 to 6 months and sizes 7-8-9. Shoes are always welcome. This free outreach program, run and supported by the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island in Garden City since 1985, assists more than 2500 children and their families each year by providing them with clothing, backpacks for school and infant furniture. The service is set up like a store so people can select what they want from a wide variety of clothes. In addition to clothing, the program distributes
donations of pampers, children’s puzzles and small toys, EFC is staffed entirely by volunteers and there is no charge for any services. Individuals, families, or community groups donate gently used clothing and any cash donations go entirely towards purchase of needed items for children, such as diapers and formula. “Customers” are referred by many of the area’s social service organizations and are supported by both religiously affiliated and
private agencies funded by Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Volunteers are always welcome to help sort, organize and deliver clothing and goods.
