Playing Santa The Key Club is a service organization affiliated with the Massapequa Kiwanis Club. It has hosted the toy drive for more than a decade. Adviser Michael LaBella said students learn about the importance of doing for others through community-based projects. “This is a time to be

Massapequa High School’s Key Club recently held a successful holiday toy drive, benefitting about 140 children at a local preschool. Students and staff at the school donated toys during a two-week period, which were then wrapped by members of the Key Club and delivered to the Amityville Head Start.

The hands of more than two dozen students at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus were busy sorting pajama and book donations after school on December 18th for the community service organization’s annual holiday drive. The Helping Hands club was preparing the items for delivery two days later

Students in two secondgrade classes in the Massapequa School District may live on opposite sides of the community, but they feel a strong connection. The children have become pen pals, and are getting to know each other through an old-fashioned way of communication — letters. Teachers Mary Anne Ferraro at McKenna Elementary School in the north end of the district

and Janeen Signorile at Birch Lane Elementary School on the southside arranged to have their students communicate throughout the school year. Ms. Ferraro’s secondgraders wrote the initial set of letters, in which each child included some personal information such as his or her birthday, hobbies and interests, and drew a self-portrait. Then, Ms. Signorile’s students

wrote similar letters back, which they sent in decorated envelopes. Ms. Signorile has a student in her class, Ava Przedwiecki, who attended McKenna last year and had Ms. Ferraro as her first-grade teacher. That spawned the idea for the partnership. The goal by the end of the year is to have students write fullpage letters to their pen pals.

Christmas Tree DropOff Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town will have two drop-off locations for safe disposal of discarded Christmas trees after the holiday season concludes. The drop-off locations, which will be located at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa and William Bennett Community Center in Hicksville, offer residents a safe and environmentally-friendly manner of disposal for those who do not wish to wait for their next yard waste collection date. “We all love the beauty of Christmas lights and trees during the holiday season. After the celebrations are over, it is important to discard the tree in a timely manner as Christmas trees can pose as a fire hazard, especially after drying out,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I recently partnered with the Massapequa Fire Department and the Nassau County Fire Marshall’s office to educate residents on the dangers Christmas trees can pose when not cared for properly. Proper and prompt disposal of a dried out tree is very important, and I’m glad to be able to establish these dropoff locations for residents who wish to immediately dispose of their tree instead of waiting for their next scheduled yard waste collection day.” Roll-off containers will be placed at both John J. Burns Park in Massapequa and William Bennett Community Center in Hicksville immediately following Christmas Day. Gingerbread Fun After reading “The Gingerbread Man,” secondgraders at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District participated in a holiday-themed engineering activity that required creativity and collaboration. In the book, the

gingerbread man is unsuccessful in crossing a river, so Lockhart students had to build a bridge that would bring him to safety. They had several materials to use including straws, Popsicle sticks and cardboard. Each group had to test the different materials, and added gram

weights to see which created the strongest bridge. Magnet and STEAM teacher Joanne Markowski said that students followed the claim, evidence and reasoning model to analyze their results and explain their findings.

New Year’s Eve is upon us - a night filled with merriment, an abundance of food, plenty of alcohol, and of course those dreaded resolutions. For me, it became an annual ritual to tell myself this is the year you’re going to lose weight and get healthy. This year is different for me and, for the first time, my goals have expanded. I want to be more active and take advantage of my newfound energy, as opposed to engaging in activities simply to lose weight and not be in pain, short of breath, uncomfortable. I want to work out more and focus on specific areas, as opposed to going to the gym and struggling to work out comfortably in order to burn calories to lose a few pounds. I want to help more people realize their health goals. This is new... I have been given a gift to help others, and for that I am thankful. So, when you are thinking about the resolutions you want to make this year,

Kind Kids Club Kindness was the theme throughout December at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Firstgrade teachers formed the Kind Kids Club and

encouraged their students to perform good deeds. There was a designated random act of kindness each day, such as writing a thank you letter to a staff member or playing

with someone new during recess. Students wrote kind sayings, which were then hung in the hallway to spread kindness to the entire school.

WARMTH THROUGH CHARITY - The Student Council at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District organized a pair of holiday drives to benefit people in the community. Students collected food, along with winter accessories such as mittens, gloves, hats and scarves, with donations from the two initiatives going to the Yes Community Counseling Center in Massapequa. Digital Exploration From the comfort of their desks, fifth-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District were able to take a trip around the world for the holidays. Students in Mary Elizabeth Delaney’s class learned about holiday traditions and customs in other countries using their Chromebooks. After reading a passage about the different ways in which people celebrate, students wrote stories about their own holiday traditions. They then used

an interactive map, the Google Santa Tracker, to learn about celebrations in other countries. Each student picked five nations and then related those traditions to their own using a digital graphic organizer. The project continued with students writing magnetic poetry. They had to pick words from a list, which resembled refrigerator magnets, and crafted poems about winter. After that, they built snowmen using

Google Slides. Each student could customize his or her creation with eyes, a nose, a mouth, arms, feet and accessories. Ms. Delaney created the lesson along with technology learning coach Louisa Vecchione. The different components supported nonfiction writing, history and geography while giving students the opportunity to become more familiar with the programs and applications available on their Chromebooks.
