With the support of Unqua Elementary School’s PTA, the Unqua Postal Service is up and running! The postal service is an on-going, year-long initiative designed to increase the letter-writing skills of children. In this era of technology, letter writing and addressing envelopes has declined, and through this project, Unqua hopes to
revitalize that. To kick off the program, students got an in-depth look at how the postal service works during a special assembly by the Postmaster of Massapequa Park. While the program was introduced in school, the letter writing will predominately take place at home to teach students that writing occurs in different settings for

Promoting Writing different purposes. Students have been encouraged to write letters to any Unqua staff member including teachers, teaching assistants, custodians, monitors, kitchen staff, clerical staff, or security staff. Fifth-grade students will also have the opportunity to serve on the “UPS Team” to help sort and deliver the mail.

The American Lung Association of the Northeast is seeking charity runners to support its lifesaving mission by running in the 2015 United Airlines NYC Half marathon on Sunday, March 15th. The Lung Association has four remaining guaranteed entry charity bibs available for runners who commit to raising $2,500 dollars each to support the Lung Association’s ongoing efforts to promote healthy lungs and healthy air. Runners who have already gained entry to the NYC Half are also invited to join and fundraise with the American Lung Association of the Northeast’s 2015 NYC Half Marathon Team. Last year half marathon runners contributed nearly $13,000 to support the Lung Association’s mission of saving lives by preventing lung disease and improving lung health.

‘Tis The Season For Memories By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column… As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma
bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family
Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

Special Holiday Schedules Those looking for something fun to do this holiday break will be happy to know that all Town of Oyster Bay ice rinks will be offering a special Holiday Schedule beginning on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24th through January 2nd, 2015. The Town of Oyster Bay ice skating holiday schedule will be begin with public sessions at all three rinks on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24th, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and 1 to 3 p.m. All rinks will be closed on Christmas Day, December 25th. Skate rentals will be available for $4 per pair per session at all facilities. Discount books for skate rentals are also available at all rinks for $35. Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center On Friday, December 26th, sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, 1 to 3 p.m., 4 to 6 p.m., and 8 to 10 p.m. Beginning Saturday, December 27th, through Tuesday, December 30th sessions will be held at the following times: 10 a.m. to noon, 1 to 3 p.m., 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Additionally, there will be two special sessions New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, December 31st at 10 a.m. to noon, and 1 to 3 p.m. There will also be two special New Year’s Day sessions on Thursday, January 1st at 1 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. On Friday, January 2nd, there will be sessions from 10 a.m. to noon, 1 to 3 p.m., 4 to 6 p.m., and 8 to 10 p.m. Admission for Oyster Bay Town residents for two-hour public skating sessions at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage will be $3 for ages two to four, $5 for ages five through 17, $6 for ages 18 and older, $4 for senior citizens 60 and older and $4 for Town veterans, volunteer firefighters and auxiliary police with identification. For non-Town residents, the general admission will be $4 for ages two to four, $8 for ages five to 17, $10 for ages 18 and older, $5 for seniors and
$5 for veterans, volunteer firefighters and auxiliary police with identification. Both Oyster Bay Town resident and non-Town resident children under two will be admitted free. Special discount books consisting of 10 tickets will be available. A discount book for ages five to 17 years will be $42 for Oyster Bay Town residents and $64 for non-Town residents. A book for ages 18 and older will be $50 for Oyster Bay Town residents and $75 for non-Town residents. Additionally, ice rinks may be rented by resident groups for $300 per hour. Non-resident groups can rent the rinks for $450 per hour. Charters will be available when public sessions are not scheduled. Top Spellers Sixth grader Connor Lepre was crowned champion of McKenna Elementary School’s 6th Annual Spelling Bee, qualifying him to compete in the 2015 Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee on February 8th. This bee is the official competition for the National Scripps Spelling Bee held in Washington D.C. during Memorial Day weekend. Also recognized for their spelling talent in the competition were fifth grader Olivia Guido, who placed second, and sixth
grader Dennis O’Brien who took third place. First- and second-place winners were awarded an online subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica and all three top winners received Barnes and Noble gift cards. The spelling bee started with fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students competing for gradelevel championships. Each grade had a 1st, 2nd and 3rd-place winner. In fourth grade, Christopher Schimkus won first place, Joseph LaBella won second place and Lea Mastorakis
do not respond. “Active Parenting” is perhaps the most effective program ever offered in the “how to” of raising children. YES Community Counseling Center will be conducting an Active Parenting program for

Lockhart Elementary School may soon be known for its friendliness. The school is expected to receive a Koda Bench, a beautifully designed bench with positive, inclusive symbols intended to foster friendliness on the playground. Koda is a Native American word meaning friend or companion. School officials said the bench plays nicely into its Bucket Filling Campaign as students have been pledging not to say, “You
can’t play,” in an effort to be promote inclusiveness. The campaign, held annually in each school, promotes in students a positive sense of self by having students fill each other’s “buckets” with positive words, deeds and actions in an effort to boost qualities such as confidence, patience and friendliness. The bench is being designed and built by Massapequa High School art and technology students. Penny Schneider’s art classes
created the design choices for the bench and Lockhart students recently voted for their favorite one. Winning by two votes was a bench with trees and little birds that bears the saying, “Friends are the family we choose for ourselves.” Technology students in James Desantis’ class will build the bench. It will then go back to the art students for painting. The final component will be the installation of the bench for all Lockhart students to enjoy.

Courses are taught by award-winning, statecertified chefs and culinary professionals. The Culinary Institute is a seven-month program, beginning in January 2015 and running four nights a week. At less than half the cost of most colleges and certificate programs these courses include uniforms, books and cutlery. Digital Design for Business teaches creative students or those who want to become more creative a variety of techniques to promote their businesses. Students will use current technology and a variety of programs in Adobe Creative Suite including Illustrator, InDesign, Flash and Photoshop. Gymnastics team triumphed against the Plainview gymnastics team with a 165. 15 to 162. 45. This accomplishment brought the girls to tears!
