500 for 500 Patriotic Scholarship Program

Dr. Cynthia Paulis proud veteran announces the annual 500 for 500 patriotic scholarship program for all seniors at Massapequa High School. The theme this year is Why Veterans are important to this country. In 500 words or less students will write

an essay and submit it to Mr. Paul Weber in the guidance office. Make sure your contact information is available. All entries must be received by December 30, 2020. Two students will be selected from the winning essays, one girl and one

Donating Blood Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

Residents should be aware of the following warning signs: • Collection bins with no identification • Overflowing, nonmaintained donation bins • Donations being requested over the phone • Acknowledgement of a donation never made • Requests for personal identification, including social security number Town officials have removed these illegallyplaced bins in the past after learning that donations were allegedly being improperly collected and sold for profit.

Any residents who see these type of donation bins in their community in the Town of Oyster Bay should contact the Town’s Code Compliance Bureau at (516) 624-6200. “As we approach the holiday season, we want residents to be certain that donations made out of the goodness of their hearts are going to the intended place,” added Councilman Imbroto. “Overall, just be cautious and remain vigilant to protect yourself, protect your personal information and protect your wellintentioned donations.” To learn how charities spend donation monies, residents can visit charitynavigator.org or charitywatch.org. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that Town’s Group Activities Program (GAP), open to residents age 5 and over with developmental disabilities, is going fully virtual beginning in January. The GAP program, which is administered through the Town’s Department of Community and Youth Services, provides a unique social-recreational experience for developmentally-disabled children and adults.

Better Breathers Club For the estimated 16 million Americans living with cardiopulmonary disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), participating in a support group can improve their emotional well-being and have a positive impact on their health. That is why Surge Rehabilitation and Nursing, located at 49

Oakcrest Ave in Middle Island, has joined with the American Lung Association (ALA) to form a Better Breathers Club at the facility which offers an opportunity for cardiopulmonary disease patients to connect virtually, via ZOOM, with others who are facing similar experiences, obtain practical information and to receive

support. The Middle Island facility has had a pulmonary support group for several years, but the partnership with the ALA is a new venture, resulting in twice the number of group participants. “With this support group we hope to promote respiratory health and a better sense of wellbeing for those living with chronic lung disease,”

Robert Madigan, Director of the Cardio Pulmonary program at Surge. The support group can also address lingering issues experienced by patients who have had COVID-19. The support group will cover an introduction to cardiopulmonary diseases; the benefits of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation; the role

of family support in cardiopulmonary disease; heart healthy medical nutrition therapy and communicating with healthcare professionals.
