In an effort to address the growing problem of homelessness among New York families, Community Housing Innovations (CHI) and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone have joined together to launch the CHI Fresh Start program. The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories. These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation. Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we
can recapture the true spirit of the season. Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer. For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration. ‘Tis the season, indeed. The upside? In 2004, Bevilacqua was part of a team that founded Beat the Streets Wrestling in New York which brings wrestling to inner city, middle schools in the New York area. Starting with one program, BTSNY expanded to 20 schools within a year. For the past five years, BTSNY’s annual gala has raised millions of dollars and introduced wrestling to more than 3,000 studentathletes. Beat the Streets now has programs in Chicago, Columbus, New Haven, Norfolk, San Francisco, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Detroit, Toledo, Milwaukee and Los Angeles. Throughout his many years of service, Coach Bev has positively affected the lives of his former students, athletes and others whose path he crossed. Beat the Streets’ Al Bevilacqua announced today that he will retire from wrestling at the end of the year. Bevilacqua’s decision to retire brings a close to a remarkable career spanning 50 years as an educator, coach, and leader in the amateur wrestling industry. “Al is one of wrestling’s most beloved and outspoken defender of our sport,” said Lee Kemp, a three-time World Champion gold medalist and spokesperson for the International Fraternity of Wrestlers. “His presence will be missed across all levels of wrestling. Al is a true New Yorker in every sense of the word. However, he loved wrestling so much that he moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma to take a position as an executive on U.S. Wrestling Federation’s (USWF) national staff. That’s love!” The legendary coach has been involved with USA Wrestling since its early years when it was known as USWF. He held several positions with the organization, including the USA Wrestling National Coaching staff (198391) and coach for the U.S. teams at the Junior World Championships, the Espoir World Championships and the World Cup. He coached the U.S. team that competed in the Tbilisi

To introduce the sport of wrestling and have it flourish in areas where it never existed before and to have it influence young boys and girls in the inner city has not only helped influence and shape young lives, it may very well have saved them,” Baldwin concluded. Bevilacqua is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades. In 1983, he was USA Wrestling’s Coach of the Year andUSAW’s Man of the Year in 2010. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame honored him with its Lifetime Service Award and he received a Special Service Award from U.S. Wrestling Federation. Among the Halls of Fame which he has been inducted, are the New York State Wrestling Hall of Fame, the New York University

former principal and director at Fortress Investments. Novogratz is also a co-founder and the current chairman of BTSNY. He wrestled in high school and served as captain of Princeton’s wrestling team. Bevilacqua’s name is synonymous with
wrestling in Massapequa. Early in his career as an educator with the Massapequa Public Schools (1961-94), Bevilacqua coached the wrestling team at Massapequa High School (1962-77), building it into one of the most successful programs

GIVING TREE - Mrs. Reyes’ Kindergarten class at St. Martin of Tours in Amityville recently collected wishing ornaments off the Giving Tree in the St. Martin of Tours Church. The children have been earning money at home to contribute to this Giving Tree fund since early November. Lockhart students, under the guidance of teacher-librarian Tara Gonzalez, discovered how to computer code along with millions of students worldwide when they logged into Code.org for the annual “Hour of Code” campaign held in conjunction with Computer Science Education Week, December 7th-13th, 2016. Launched in 2013, the Hour of Code was designed to take the mystery out of coding by providing computer users of all ages and populations access
to fun, easy-to-follow programs that teach the basics of coding. Elementary-age students had the opportunity to learn the skill through new Star Wars and Frozenthemed coding programs, among others, that allowed them to build their own video games. “By engaging in this campaign, students learned that creating code can be easy, fun, and inspiring,” Gonzalez said. “This campaign ties in beautifully with our goal of exposing and engaging students in 21st Century
learning by fostering the use of critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are needed to advance through the programs.” Because it is web-based, students can improve their coding skills outside the classroom and many are participating at home, according to Gonzalez. “Students are now sharing the coding they are doing at home on the Library Haiku page,” she said. “This will surely become an annual event at Lockhart!”

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

The Children’s Center at United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Suffolk Inc. brought Rockefeller Center to its students this holiday season. The school hosted a tree lighting ceremony
the tree was lit. Students had an opportunity to place their handmade ornaments on the tree and then staff, students and parents counted down to light the tree. This was followed by individual pictures and personal time with Santa. Snacks were served and each student received a toy of their choice. Local artist Mel Moran serenaded the crowd with acoustic versions of holiday songs during the event. “The Children’s Center Tree Lighting was a huge success,” Glazer said. “This event supported our students’ independence and functional movement as well as supporting them with positioning while getting the perfect picture with Santa. Guilds Support he Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $65,333 to the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation. This donation will enhance the hospital’s anesthesia services by supporting the acquisition
of an Apollo® Anesthesia Machine, an advanced system with ventilation technology to support patients of any age. This gift brought the Guilds’ 2015 donations to a total of more than $211,000 for various
programs, including surgical intensive care and emergency services. Made up of volunteers from surrounding communities, the Guilds have raised more than $10 million for the hospital since 1958.
YOUTH OUTREACH - On December 10th, the staff from NuHealth Family Health Centers participated in a community event hosted by the Gateway Youth Outreach program. The ACCESS Program is a yearlong program for at risk high school students in Elmont and Sewanhaka school districts. The 21 students who attended the event had the opportunity to network with medical professionals and learn about the different steps that lead them to their current positions.
