Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today visited Suffolk County’s newest cooperative project at the West Sayville Greenhouse. County Executive Bellone joined Legislator Kara Hahn and the Suffolk Association for Habilitation and Residential Care (AHRC) to meet the members of AHRC who maintain the greenhouse by growing, tending and selling plants. The Suffolk Association for Habilitation and Residential Care serves children and adults with developmental disabilities by providing programs, services and opportunities for them to grow and contribute to society in meaningful ways. Currently AHRC serves more than 2,500 individuals across Suffolk County.

Last on the List Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed. Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like. Not that I am much better when it comes to this. Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown

up yet. Alas, my apartment doesn’t allow for a furry fourlegged friend; besides, my little baby betta Spud would be jealous. They say people have become increasingly thoughtless in the age of technology, opting to do most of their shopping online and “mail it in” when it comes to selecting the perfect present. I, for one, still prefer to personally browse the stores, even if I have a fairly good idea of what I want to buy. Nothing quite compares to that personal touch. So why have I barely begun this process with less than a week remaining ‘til Christmas? An excellent question, deﬂected by a focus on de-twinkling my ﬂickering window lights, decorating my balcony just in time for the annual cleaning-of-thegutters to completely cover everything in a fine black

layer of dirt and ground-up leaves, and contemplating how to shove all things not Christmas-related into any available corner of the closet. Gift shopping, or even listmaking, not so much. And yet somehow, some way, everything manages to get done each year… even if, at times, it has included wrapping presents in the corner of my bedroom as company arrives on Christmas Eve. No need for ribbons and bows, as long as the box is (relatively) covered and the right person winds up with the appropriate package. In everything, it’s the thought that counts. With that, sending thoughts to all of our readers for a healthy, happy holiday season. Here’s hoping you all receive everything on your wish list.

Fifth-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are serving as Santa’s elves during the holiday season. As part of the annual toy drive, students in John Coyne’s class travel the school each day and collect items generously donated by their peers.

The toys will be donated to the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, which assists sick and underprivileged children. The school has been participating in the collection drive for more than a decade and has collected more than 11,000 toys since the first year. The theme for this year’s

toy drive is kindness. All students who make a donation received a pencil and kindnessthemed coloring sheet. The completed drawings will be collected and then hung around the school to spread holiday cheer and goodwill.

Alumni Take on Cancer

The annual Massapequa Basketball Alumni Game, “Coaches and Alumni vs. Cancer,” will be held on Saturday, December 30th, from noon to 2 p.m., at Massapequa High School. This event is a collaboration between the Massapequa High School boys varsity basketball team, basketball alumni, the Boys Booster Club, and family and friends of the boys basketball program. This year, donations will support pancreatic cancer research. Donations can be made by cash or by check made payable to the Lustgarten Foundation. Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. IN LOVE WITH ART - With winter on the way, third-grade students at Lockhart Elementary

Students in the Massapequa School District were among the millions of youngsters from across the world who participated in Hour of Code activities during the week of December 4th8th. The global initiative by Code.Org is an annual event that introduces children and teenagers to computer programming, and this was the fourth year the district has participated. In the six elementary schools, library media specialists and computer teacher assistants worked together to lead coding activities for students, which were done on both desktop computers and Chromebooks. At Lockhart Elementary School, children in kindergarten through second-grade used the program Kodable, which allowed them to do basic coding using the arrow keys. Students

in third, fourth and fifth grades did more advanced programming centered on the popular computer game Minecraft. “The children are not just playing the game, they’re doing the programming,” said library media specialist Tara Gonzalez, who explained that everyone could work at their own pace. She added that the process teaches children patience and helps them develop their problem-solving skills. East Lake Elementary School offered different game-based coding activities that varied by level such as Candy Quest for third grade and the Amazing World of Gumball for fourth grade. These games taught students about the computer programming language Scratch. “Hour of Code gives our students an exciting

opportunity to learn about coding,” said Executive Director for Technology and General Administration Bryan Piotrowski. “The program engages students and inspires them to learn more about computer science.” Mr. Piotrowski explained that many students on the secondary level do coding throughout the year in technology and computer science courses, in addition to participating in the Hour of Code. Lockhart Elementary School fourth-graders Niko Samaras and Lexi Nutter both enjoyed participating in Hour of Code and said they learned a lot about programming. They said it opened their eyes into how much work goes into the creation of their favorite video games. “It’s very important to learn,” Lexi said. “You get to show your creativity.”

The Reading Room The independent reading room at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District is almost like a second library, filled with books for students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Its creation was a collaborative effort between the staff and the Birch Lane PTA. Teachers can sign up to bring their classes to the bright and

colorful space which has a camping theme to create a cozy atmosphere. The PTA donated books and furniture, and there are numerous seating options including beanbag chairs and large pillows, so children can find comfortable places to sit and read. Fifth-grade teacher Alison Morgan likes to bring her class to the reading room on a regular

basis because of the large selection of both fiction and nonfiction reading materials. She said it is the perfect place for each child to find his or her “justright” book. “I like this room because there are a lot of books that I can try out every time I come here,” said fifth-grader Chloe Cestra. “Reading books is one of my favorite things to do.”

Cooking and crafts come together each month at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, as students participate in holiday and seasonal activities during the after-school club. The Cooking and Crafts Club has approximately 125 members. The club is so popular that there is a separate session for sixthgraders, which accounts for about half of the membership. Adviser Lisa Tuniewicz leads the club

with support from fellow Family and Consumer Science teachers Kristen Kenny and Patricia McDermott. In October, students made a Halloween craft, lollipop ghosts, and cheese and pretzel-stick spider webs, while in November they decorated cookies to look like turkeys. For December, they took part in the schoolwide holiday door-decorating contest by coming up with designs for the four classroom doors

the club was assigned. Sixth-graders, like Ella Livingston and Casey Mangan, say they like the creativity that the projects allow. They also enjoy sharing ideas with their classmates. “I like doing crafts and I like cooking, too,” added seventh-grader Natalie Wipperman. “The activities are all really fun and not something that you would see or do everyday.”

More than 100 ninthgraders from Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus learned about school life thousands of miles away during a presentation by nonprofit organization Reason2Smile on December 6th. Students from the National Junior Honor Society and Helping Hands attended the afterschool presentation by Executive Director Donna Rosenblum. She

talked about the school in Mtwapa, Kenya that her organization helps fund, the Jambo Jipya School. Through photos and stories, Massapequa students learned how educational experiences are similar and different for students in Kenya. Ms. Rosenblum encouraged each ninthgrader to channel his or her own inner superhero by doing charitable acts for others. She said that the purpose of her presentation

was to “empower children to feel like they can make a difference.” Both Helping Hands and the National Junior Honor Society perform community service activities. Ames students were able to purchase colorful bracelets, with proceeds benefitting the Jambo Jipya School. She said it could serve as a visual reminder for them of the small but meaningful effort they made to support another child’s education.
