Mr. Mullahey speaks with a Servox, an amplifier that he holds up to his throat to pick up the vibrations of his vocal cords. Additionally, he can’t go swimming and can’t eat certain food. As part of his presentation, Mr. Mullahey shares strategies with students on how to say “no” if they are being pressured to smoke, as well as how to approach a family member about quitting smoking. Teacher Luana Dunn said Mr. Mullahey’s presentation supports the seventh grade health curriculum which includes a unit on smoking. Seventh graders in the Massapequa School District gained an understanding of the harmful effects of smoking from a guest presenter who strives to educate youngsters by sharing his personal story. Frank Mullahey, of Massapequa, has been visiting Berner Middle School for more than 15 years to speak to students during their health classes. Mr. Mullahey explained that he started smoking when he was 12 and continued the habit for four decades. More than 20 years ago, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and was given months to live. A surprise recovery led to Mr. Mullahey’s desire to “do something positive” and teach children about the dangers of smoking. He noted the short-term and long-term effects

Chieffo Of Massapequa Joins Faculty Professional baker Danielle Chieffo of Massapequa has been appointed to the faculty of Nassau BOCES Barry Tech career and technical education high school as culinary instructor. Chef Chieffo will share her considerable industry and educational experience with the next generation of culinary professionals, both at Barry Tech and as an in-district teacher. Chef Chieffo, owner of Cutie Oodie Cakes custom bakery in Massapequa, has considerable industry experience under her toque. She was pastry chef at The Carltun, an elite dining destination on Long Island, and bakery assistant at Bare Naked Bakery in Bellmore. She has held key positions with the Whole Foods multinational supermarket chain as a shift leader, team leader and member of the bakery production team. Chef Chieffo is proud to be the first female chef to be named culinary instructor at Barry Tech. She is no stranger to the

DANIELLE CHIEFFO school’s culinary program, having served for the past three years as a teaching assistant. Now that she has a classroom of her own, she intends to continue and expand on the important work she has been doing. “What I love most about this program is that it’s all inclusive,” she said. “We teach all skill levels, confident in the knowledge that there is a job for everyone.” In addition to her work as a teaching assistant at Barry Tech, she has served as culinary instructor at the school’s annual Summer Camp, delivered

in conjunction with Hofstra University. She has taught baking and cake decorating in the adult education program at Sewanhaka High School, and has served as a baking coach, delivering baking classes in schools and libraries throughout Long Island. She holds degrees in food service management, baking and pastry art from Johnson & Wales University. “I’m doing what I love and sharing it with students who are as passionate about it as I am,” Chef Chieffo says of her position as culinary instructor. She is equally thrilled to be working in Barry Tech’s leading–edge kitchen facilities. “The home economics room I grew up with in high school doesn’t compare,” she observed. “Our students are learning in a real-world work setting with the equipment they will use in the industry. We are preparing them to do their very best, either in the workforce or in a college program.”

Creative Confections At East Lake A long-standing tradition continued at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on Dec. 5 as parents joined first grade students to make gingerbread houses. The annual family activity was

held in the cafeteria where it was OK to get a little messy. Using milk cartons as the outline of their houses, children and their guests added graham crackers for walls, then decorated from a large assortment of candy.

Many also landscaped the outside of their houses with Christmas trees and snowmen. There was plenty of icing to hold all the pieces together. Once the houses were done, parents took them home to serve as holiday decorations.

MTAC Works Across The Massapequas Partnerships Promote Healthy Families Massapequa Takes Action Coalition works with many partners across the Massapequas to prevent substance misuse and promote healthy families. This fall, the Massapequa Elks Lodge #2162 donated nine hundred drug awareness youth coloring books which were distributed as part of the Massapequa High School SADD Club’s SAFE Halloween. The Elks strive to better the Massapequas with drug awareness programs, hoop and soccer shoot contests for kids. In addition to providing youth resources, dedicated

SADD Club volunteers stuffed and distributed nine hundred MTAC Tote Bags. The bags included “Keeping Youth Drug Free” booklets; a parents/ caregiver resource to help families establish and maintain good communication with their children. Studies have shown that parents have a significant influence on young people’s decisions about alcohol or drugs, especially when parents create supportive and nurturing environments in which their children can make their own decisions. Big, Colorful Ideas For Small Spaces ( N A P S I ) — T h e C(NAPSI)—Making a small room appear larger can be as simple as using color creatively. To add some breathing room to a compact space, all you need are some colorful ideas. “Color is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to transform the look and feel of a room,” says David Bromstad, HGTV® star and celebrity interior designer. “When used in a few well-chosen places, such as a feature wall or statement piece of furniture, color can have a big impact in a small space.” Bromstad offers these color tips for transforming a space from tiny to airy: Create a focal point with paint. World Kindness Day is celebrated in November, but students at Unqua Elementary School decided one day wasn’t enough. They devoted the entire month to spreading messages of kindness to foster a continuing culture of caring and compassion. Students also signed their names around the large letters as a way of pledging their commitment to kindness. Other ways that the SADD club spread kindness was by passing out compliment cards to their peers and gifting Kind snack bars to teachers and staff members. Ms. Napolitano visited classrooms for lessons on giving compliments.

Fifth grade SADD club members Rylie Duenges, Samantha Gjodesen and Jett Stake talked about the importance of being role models as the oldest students in the school and showed through their own actions how to treat others. “You have to spread kindness throughout the world,” Jett said. “If everyone’s nice, then everyone could be happy.” Added Rylie, “I want to be in a school where everyone is nice to each other and cares for each other.”

Mock Trial Team Continues To Impress Massapequa High School’s mock trial team had another successful fall season with a county championship and a pair of individual awards. The team participated in Harvard University’s High School Seminar Program on Nov. 16 and 17, during which they attended workshops hosted by accomplished members of Harvard’s mock trial team. Additionally, Massapequa students took part in a mock trial scrimmage, presenting arguments on a fictitious homicide case. Senior Meaghan Phillips, who played the role of the defendant, won the award for best witness while Samantha Kearns earned the best attorney award. The Massapequa team also received valuable feedback from Harvard’s mock trial members. Shortly after returning, the team participated in

the Long Island Mentor Moot Court competition at the federal courthouse in Central Islip. The team of Aidan Franzke, Alex Lawless, Isabella Mininni and Meaghan Phillips argued a case involving a constitutional rights violation. They advanced to the Nassau County championship round and defeated Holy Trinity High School. The team spent about six weeks preparing for the Moot Court competition, extensively studying prior legal decisions to prepare their arguments. Alex noted that even though the case was fictional, he and his teammates cited real case law. Students say that mock trial helps them improve their public speaking skills, ability to think on their feet and understanding of using evidence to defend

their arguments, and many members of the team are interested in pursuing careers in law. They also noted that being successful in competition requires good teamwork and a strong understanding of each other’s strengths. “You can’t win a case by yourself,” Aidan said. “You need every person to do their part.” The mock trial competitions allow students to further develop their understanding of the legal system from their basic and advanced law classes with teachers Daniel Bachman, John Pardue, Dana Robbins and David Summers. Mr. Bachman and Mr. Pardue coach the team, which is now preparing for a February tournament hosted by the Nassau County Bar Association.
