airfield Elementary School first graders in Jennifer Tand’s school-wide Enrichment Classes investigated how a bird’s beak is adapted to its habitat. Students created a hypothesis and then conducted their experiments and compared results. Students went on a hunt to try to catch as much “food” as they could, using a variety of tools to simulate different types of beaks. Pictured is the experiment in progress.

Life-saving messages of exercising good judgment, open communication and responsible behavior during intimate relationships were clearly stressed to freshmen at Massapequa High School Ames Campus at one of two assemblies led by speakers from Love Heals, the Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education. Each year, a combination of skits, interactive lessons, guest speakers, videos and take-home lessons are presented to students in an effort to educate them about the dangers of risky behavior. Residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Adult Co-Ed Zumba, Yoga and Cardio Kickboxing Programs, according to Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia. The programs are open to Town residents 18 and older, and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The Zumba program starts on Wednesday, January 8th and will be held on Mondays, from 7 to 8 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. The Yoga program starts on Tuesday, January 7th will be conducted on Tuesdays from 8 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m. The Cardio Kickboxing class starts Friday, January 10th and will be held on Mondays from 8 to 9 p.m. and Fridays 6 to 7 p.m. The programs, which are 12 weeks in duration, are $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. Proof of residency is required. “Zumba, Yoga and Cardio Kickboxing are all excellent forms of aerobic exercise, which can help promote multiple health benefits and longevity,” Councilwoman
Alesia said. “Along with positive health benefits, I would encourage people to join these co-ed activities for the social aspect as well.” Councilwoman Alesia noted that registration for both programs will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, 167 Broadway in Hicksville, on Tuesday, December 10th and Thursday, December 12th from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, December 14th from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. After these dates, registration will continue based on availability. These programs are open to Town residents only, 18 and over, with a valid ID required for registration. Please note that the schedule may be subject to change and residents are encouraged to inquire about special holiday scheduling. “The Town’s Co-Ed Programs are great ways to improve health and make new friends,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “I encourage everyone to take advantage of this terrific program.” For further information, contact the Hicksville Athletic Center at 516.733.8406.

Savor The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week. Seven days. One hundred sixty eight hours. (We won’t get into minutes and seconds – you get the idea.) This is precisely how much time remains before Christmas. And with the virtual countdown comes that age-old holiday anxiety, the mad rush to finish writing out the greeting cards, shopping for gifts, wrapping, cleaning, cooking, baking… whatever your traditions call for in the race to conjure that yearly sense of merriment. Right. The holiday spirit. That is what all the fuss
is about, after all. Lest we forget the reason for all the racing around, the endless “To Do” lists, the exorbitant credit card bills… all for a day or two of celebration with family and friends, neighbors and loved ones. Seems like an awful lot of effort doesn’t it? This is why, when everyone else is busy ripping down the Christmas decorations on December 26th, I say wait. Savor it a little longer. Extend the festivities. You put all that time and effort into preparing for the occasion – might as well enjoy it as long as you can.

Of course, all of this is irrelevant to those who start their Christmas shopping in January and are finished decorating by Halloween. Seriously folks – enjoy one season, and one holiday, at a time. This time of year is not one long list to be accomplished in as little time as humanly possible; it is made up of moments to be cherished, memories to reflect upon and add to with each passing year. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Pinto announced that beginning Friday, December 13th, the Town will have free firewood available for Town residents. “Starting Friday, December 13th, and continuing every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through mid-March 2014, Town of Oyster Bay residents can come to the Town Highway yard, 150 Miller Place, Syosset, after 3 p.m. on Friday and between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, to pick up a trunk-full of cut, but not split, wood,” Councilman Pinto said. “No vehicles with commercial plates will be permitted.” Councilman Pinto went on to say that while getting firewood is important to stay warm during these cold winter months, it’s even more important to stay safe and practice safe habits when using a fireplace with a chimney or a wood burning stove. “Remember that both the fireplace and chimney need to be cleaned and inspected before the first use of the season to avoid any chance of a chimney fire,” the Councilman cautioned. “Precautions should also be taken when the fireplace is in use. The damper must always remain open whenever the fire is lit in the fireplace, and either screening or glass doors should be used to keep sparks from flying into the room.” The Councilman noted that many of the precautions regarding fireplaces also pertain to wood stoves, especially when it comes to keeping them clean and free of creosote. “Few things warm the body and soul during these cold winter months like a toasty fire,” Councilman Pinto commented. “So, pick up some free firewood, courtesy of the Town, and make sure your fireplace or wood stove is in good working order, so you can safely enjoy the special warmth that a fireplace or wood stove radiates.” For further information, call 516.677.5757.

STUDENTS HELPING SANTA - Students at Grace Day School volunteered to lend a helping had to Santa as he posed for photos at the annual Breakfast with Santa held Saturday, December 7th. The boys did a fantastic job managing photos with Santa for over 50 families. They spent the morning helping youngsters from the community pose with Santa and directing parents to a photo-op station to use their smart phones and cameras to capture the magical moment. The boys did numerous tasks including running wires, implementing safety precautions, crowd guidance and making sure GIRLS STATE CHAMPIONS - A celebration was recently hosted at the Uniqua each youngster left with a candy cane and a smile. Santa couldn’t ask for a better team Yacht Club in Amityville to honor the Massapequa High School Soccer Girls State of helpers! Champions. Congratulations!
