Holiday Collection Drive To Support Veterans Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Clerk Richard LaMarca recently announced that the Town will host a Holiday Collection Drive in support of the Northport VA. From December 1st through December 20th, residents are invited to donate toiletries, clothing, and gift cards at Town Hall North (54 Audrey Ave, Oyster Bay), Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa), or the Bethpage Ice Skating Center (1001 Stewart Ave, Bethpage). “From hosting our annual Salute to Veterans Concert to the Hometown Heroes Banner Program, the Town of Oyster Bay is committed to honoring our Veterans,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I invite residents to join me in
this mission by helping to bring the comforts of home to Veterans living at the Northport VA and making a donation to our collection drive this holiday season.” Most sought after items include toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, unscented deodorant, body wash, unscented lotion, nail clippers, and shampoo), clothing (men’s underwear size 2XL & 3XL, men’s sweatsuits size 2XL & 3XL, socks, flip flops, pajamas, and scarves), entertainment (magazines, movies, and CDs, especially Greatest Hits of the ‘50s & ‘60s), and gift cards (VISA, Uber, Stop & Shop, and Petco). “When I learned that the Northport VA has a ‘Wish List’ of items their Veterans need, I knew Supervisor Saladino and
the Town Board would spring into action with me to help ensure these needs are met,” Town Clerk LaMarca said. “I thank them for partnering with me to organize this critical initiative, and I thank the residents of our wonderful Town in advance for their generosity and support of our Veterans.” The Town’s Collection Drive will run from December 1 to December 20. From now until Monday, December 20, 2021, they will be collecting new, unwrapped toys at their district offices to be delivered to local hospitals. Emily Meyer, a local teen and founder of The Emily Meyer Foundation, was inspired to start a toy drive eleven years ago at the age of five after being hospitalized on Christmas and receiving a toy by a Child Life volunteer to help comfort her. The artistic talents of two Massapequa High School students have left a social studies classroom a little more colorful. Juniors Juliana Cole and Lily DiBendetto recently competed a mural that celebrates the history of the United States and New York. Social studies teacher Robert Vath reached out to
art teacher Julie Thornton about adding a mural to his classroom. Juliana came up with the concept, which included an American flag as well as a scene of the Brooklyn Bridge, One World Trade Center and other New York City skyscrapers at sunset. Then, she and Lily got to work, painting it around the door
inside the room They worked during their lunch periods and afterschool to complete the floor-to-ceiling masterpiece, which spans more than 12 feet in length. Juliana is a student in the drawing and painting class, and Lily is taking computer art and design this year.

Labriola And Maier Urge Residents To Donate Blood As Supplies Are Needed To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Monday, December 20th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. Councilman Labriola stated, “This holiday season, I am urging residents to give a little extra and donate blood that can save lives. Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider
participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy
Queen, compliments of Councilwoman Laura Maier. Councilwoman Maier added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Town Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks Now Open
Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto announced that the Town’s outdoor ice skating rinks at Marjorie R. Post and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks have officially opened for the season. “Ice skating is a fun activity for residents of all ages to enjoy, and the Town’s outdoor ice rinks provide the perfect setting to relax, unwind, and take in the wonderful winter atmosphere,” said Councilman Imbroto. “Our outdoor ice rink facilities are the perfect
antidote to combating cabin fever during the winter months, and are the ideal way to help make coping with the cold fun and enjoyable!” Public Skating Sessions are hosted at both outdoor rinks on Fridays from 4pm-6pm and 7pm-9pm, Saturdays from 1pm-3pm, 4pm-6pm, and 7pm9pm, and Sundays from 1pm3pm and 4pm-6pm. During Holiday Breaks, a special schedule takes effect, which is available on oysterbaytown. com. Also, for those who wish to take advantage of ice skating
