Leader of Languages William Anderson, the World Languages and English as a New Language curriculum associate for the Massapequa School District, recently received the Remunda Cadoux Award for Leadership in Foreign Language Supervision. Mr. Anderson, who began as a Spanish teacher at Massapequa High School in 1998, has served in his current position since 2008 and oversees more than 30 teachers. He supervises the district’s ENL program and the World Languages program at Berner Middle School, Massapequa High School and the Ames Campus, where offerings include French, German, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, as well as Italian and American Sign Language as electives. This year, he played a crucial role in the implementation of the Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools pilot

program, which provides Spanish instruction to third-graders. Under his leadership, the district has partnered with the Asia Society Confucius Classrooms Network which led to the creation, expansion and ongoing support of Massapequa’s Mandarin Chinese course program. The Remunda Cadoux Award, named for the creator of one of the earliest state syllabi for foreign language education, is presented annually to a New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers member who embodies the leadership skills that Cadoux did. “It’s hard to conceive receiving an award after only 12 years as an administrator,” Mr. Anderson said. “I love what I do because of the amazing teachers, students and parents with whom I work each and every day.

I am honored and truly humbled.” For his nomination, Mr. Anderson received letters of support from Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis, Assistant to the Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Thomas Fasano, and World Language teachers. They cited his creativity, enthusiasm, vision, supportive leadership and collaborative spirit. “Mr. Anderson embodies all the characteristics of a distinguished leader,” said Ms. Iconis. “He works tirelessly to guarantee that each child be afforded a wide range of opportunities in the study of foreign languages. Mr. Anderson has assured that the Massapequa Public Schools maintain the outstanding foreign language program it has come to enjoy.”

Homeowners wishing to receive exemptions on their 2017-2018 School taxes and 2018 General taxes must file with the Nassau County Department of Assessment or New York State before the January 2nd deadline. And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age. This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

The eligibility to receive this exemption and amount to be exempted depends upon the time, duration and type of service, along with other criteria. Cold War Veterans Exemption is for veterans who served during the Cold War period. The Law also provides an additional exemption to disabled veterans. Gold Star Parent Exemption is available for the parent of a child who died in the line of duty while serving in the United States Armed Forces during a period of war, as defined in NYS Real Property Tax Law. Physically Disabled Tax Reduction Program for Home Improvements is granted to those persons who are physically disabled and meet the criteria. It is equal to the amount of any increase in value of property attributable to improvements made for the purpose of facilitating and accommodating the use and

When I was little, all I ever wanted for Christmas was a puppy. Every single year, the same thing. When that didn’t happen, I switched to a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey & Minnie Mouse.” Lofty goals for a child, to be sure… but nothing a visit to a department store Santa, list of wishes in hand, couldn’t fix. As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff. I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.

Eventually, the clothes and accessories and latest trends were more appreciated, complemented with stocking stuffers of CDs and DVDs and maybe even a pair of tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list. And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on

Promoting the Profession Science students at Massapequa High School learned about a career that greatly helps others when they met with Sue Wisler, a certified prosthetist. The guest speaker, who works for the Hanger Clinic which makes prosthetics and orthotics, spoke with students in the anatomy and physiology and Advanced Placement biology courses on December 2nd. Ms. Wisler explained that the industry has made

great advancements in the past 20 years, discussing how people are able to live normal lives with replacement limbs created by prosthetists. She even talked to students about Winter, a dolphin with a prosthetic tail. Students learned about the education needed to become a prosthetist, the college that offer a program, pre-requisite skills that can be learned in high school classes, and volunteer and internship

opportunities. Science teacher Robert Gariglio said the purpose of her visit was to open the eyes of students to a career possibility. He said it is a growing profession with opportunities for motivated individuals. “It’s a profession where you can really help people,” Mr. Gariglio said. “It’s something that not a lot of students may have known about and I believe her presentation was very informative.”

At X-mas time from year to year I wonder will I next time still be here. In old times my husband used to decorate With a lot of love and often up quite late. He also mentioned the then-pending next year Saying “I will get more lights, if I am still here.” It is sad that by now he already is long gone. Much changed from how then celebration was done. We had angels big and small with bells of all size. Some never used – on their wings still the price. Keepsakes survived from grandma’s and mother’s home! Now, my grandson with glee in those treasures does roam. My enthusiasm to lavishly decorate my home is gone. Now to the younger generation, this is meant to be done. Getting older, one gets more involved to figure out What the true reason for the season is all about. Ongoing the tradition will be I will hang the rest on my young family’s tree Some of the items -- stars and lights -- I sort out. I will donate this year to a needy crowd. The ones that move me really deep I will display near the hearth and for myself do keep. Yes, X-mas seems to come faster and faster each year Let’s enjoy it and cherish what to us is dear.

Persons with incomes less than $37,400 can qualify to receive an exemption from 5% to 50%. Home Improvement Exemption is an eight-year decreasing exemption on alterations, reconstructions or improvements that increase the assessed value of a one or two family home. In the first year, 100 percent of the assessed value of the improvement is exempt. In the second year, 87.5 percent, in the third year, 75 percent and so on. Certain eligibility requirements must be met to participate in this program. 1st Time Home Buyers of Newly Constructed Homes may apply for and receive a partial real property tax exemption. The maximum exemption is offered over five years, starting with a 50 percent exemption the first year and phasing to 10 percent in the fifth and final year. Homebuyers are subject to certain price and income limits set by the State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA). Volunteer Firefighter and Ambulance Worker Exemption is available to eligible firefighters and ambulance workers. Up to 10 percent reduction in the assessed value of their property can be obtained to volunteers who have served at least five years in a Town of Oyster Bay Fire Department in which they reside. Certain eligibility requirements must be met to participate in this program. Author Shelley Pearsall’s book “The Seventh Most Important Thing” has made its mark on readers of all ages at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. As part of the One School, One Book initiative, all students and staff read the story and recently heard from the children’s writer. This is the third year the school has participated in the initiative. Each book is selected by the Shared Decision Making Team of administrators, teachers, students and parents, and must relate to character education. Pearsall’s book includes messages of friendship, forgiveness and redemption. All students received a copy on the first day of school, and were encouraged to read it

within a month. Follow-up discussions and activities continue through the school year in all subjects, such as in physical education classes where students will participate in a walkathon with proceeds going to the local Yes Community Counseling Center. Pearsall visited on December 5th, the first time the One School, One Book author has come to Berner. During assemblies for each grade, she talked about the writing and editing process, coming up with ideas for books and how to become a published author. She then met with students from the Berner Beacon newspaper and Poetry Slam for a question and answer session before taking part in a book

discussion with parents and students. Eighth-grader and Beacon writer Kieran Winthrop said he enjoyed not only learning more about the meaning of her book, but about the practice and patience needed to become a good writer. He said the best advice she gave was to find examples of good writing to model, and not to be afraid to take risks. “Our goal is to create a community of readers,” said Executive Assistant to the Principal Theresa Donohue, who coordinates the One School, One Book initiative. “For the students to meet the author and to be able to ask questions, it just makes it more personal and more meaningful.”

Fourth-grade students at Unqua Elementary School in Massapequa School District learned about Native Americans as the Journeys Into American Indian Territory traveling museum came to the school on November 28th29th. The program began with a video focusing on different aspects of Native American culture. Presenters Maddi Cheers and Richie Cornacchio then led a follow-up discussion and answered questions about Native

American life past and present. As part of the traveling museum, students were able to walk through a model of a longhouse, view artifacts such as clothing, baskets and dolls, bang on a drum and use a corn pounder. They learned how hunting parties were formed to gather food and about the origins of a popular Native American sport - lacrosse. In another room, students played traditional games. They learned Atenaha, a game of chance

which involved throwing dice onto a piece of deer skin, and Ring and Pin, which had a small circle attached to a stick by a string and was designed to improve hand-eye coordination. The Journeys program is held at all elementary schools in the Massapequa School District throughout the school year. It supports the fourth-grade social studies curriculum, which centers on the history of New York state and Long Island.

The Alison Gertz Foundation presented its Love Heals assembly at the high school’s Ames Campus on December 2nd. Niko Flowers and Jahlove Serrano shared their personal stories of living with HIV, and told ninth-graders how to take the proper precautions to avoid contracting the disease. The Names Project provided two large quilt panels at each secondary school, which were displayed for the week. Each panel consisted of pieces that were made in honor of someone who died because of AIDS. A public viewing was held in the high school’s Baldwin Auditorium on December 1st. Denise Baldinger, the

district’s health education chairwoman who coordinated AIDS Awareness Week, said that having the quilt humanized the disease and made students realize that real people have been and continue to be affected by it. She said the purpose of the week was to teach children and teens about compassion and good decision making. She explained that even though advancements in medicine allow people with AIDS to live much longer than they used to, it is still a very difficult to disease to manage and can be very costly. “We don’t want our kids to get this horrific disease,” said Ms. Baldinger. “It is 100 percent preventable.”

AIDS Awareness The Massapequa School District observed World AIDS Day on December 1st with several educational programs throughout the week designed to inform students about the effects of HIV and AIDS. During physical education classes at Massapequa High School and Berner Middle School, Peer AIDS Educators performed skits for their fellow students, sharing AIDSrelated facts such as how the disease is transmitted, what behavior puts people at risk, and how to live with it. The trained student performers from the high school presented the information in an engaging way that allowed their peers to understand the severity of the health crisis.
