‘Holiday on Ice’ performance attendees will also be offered an opportunity to take part in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program, which offers residents the opportunity to fill out free holiday greeting cards, available in the lobby, for delivery to troops in the United States Armed Forces stationed in the homeland and around the globe. Due to the ‘Holiday on Ice’ show, the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center’s regularly scheduled public skating sessions slated for 1pm to 3 pm and 3:30 pm to 5:30pm, will be cancelled on December 17th. However, the Town’s two outdoor rinks, located at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa and at SyossetWoodbury Park will be open for visitors. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board are pleased to announce the Annual ‘Holiday on Ice’ Show is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 16th at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located in Bethpage Community Park, 1001 Stewart Avenue. Safety Patrol Gives A Daily Warm Welcome At Massapequa’s McKenna dates back more than 100 years. At McKenna, each fifth grade class gets a chunk of the school calendar, and any student from that class can volunteer. Ms. Ferraro said it builds responsibility and accountability, as Safety Patrol members have to come to school early to help. They typically spend 20 to 25 minutes on patrol each morning before school starts. This fall, students from Mary Scheffler’s class are the Safety Patrol volunteers and enjoy being role models. As they walk the first floor every morning during arrival, Safety Patrol members at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District strive to give everyone a good start to their day. As much as their mission is safety, the fifth graders who don the neon green sashes are just as much about community building. Assistant Principal Mary Anne Ferraro said the goal is to create connections between the school’s oldest and youngest students. Safety Patrol members guide kindergartners and first graders to their classes, often holding hands and having friendly conversation along the way. “When our fifth graders move on, this is something that they’re going to remember doing,” Ms. Ferraro said, adding that this is the sixth year of Safety Patrol at McKenna. of their day, many specialneeds individuals perform a range of tasks for not-forprofits that help to keep the doors open and the milk of

human kindness flowing. According to the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps survey, volunteer participation was

at 23.2 percent, a drop of 7 percent between 2019 and 2021 – the largest decrease the survey has seen since its 2002 inception. Special-needs individuals step in to do the most basic tasks to more intricate things such as data entry, interacting with donors and computer and office tasks. “Our clients make the decision about which organizations they’d like to volunteer with,” says Christina Abbinanti of Life’s WORC in Garden City. She said that clients participate as part of the Program Without Walls that allows special-needs individuals to integrate into the community. The clients volunteer at a range of organizations throughout the week. “They also learn valuable job and interpersonal skills.” At Hair We Share on Long Island, special-needs volunteers keep the doors

open and allow the allvolunteer organization to continue to provide free, hand-laced wigs to medical patients. The wigs, which average $4,000 each, are custom fitted to patients. “Volunteers are our life blood,” says co-founder Dean Riskin. “We have no paid staff. We have seventyfive-thousand ponytails we are sitting on that need to be sorted, weighed and bagged and we couldn’t do it without them.” In addition to getting a warm feeling about helping, special-needs volunteers hone important work and

social skills that help them when they apply for jobs.
