Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Thomas P. Hand announced that a special drive called “Helping through the Holidays,” will be launched at all three of the Town’s ice skating facilities. Christmas Conundrums And just like that, it’s less than two weeks until Christmas. No sooner did I unpack my infamous Christmas closet and brace myself for the avalanche of décor which poured forth, then I must now begin to contemplate how in the world I’m going to fit everything back where I found it. ’Tis the season, indeed, short as it may be. I’m sure I am not alone in discovering that, upon surveying the annual spread of lights and battery-operated trinkets, there are always some casualties carried over from the previous holiday season lights that no longer twinkle, animated knick knacks that have become somewhat more stationary, garland that was torn by the wind… whatever the case may be. This year, remembering I had taken my remaining lights and
tossed them in the trash in frustration somewhere between Christmas ’16 and the dropping of the ball in Times Square, I knew I was in the market for replacements. Of course, not having measured prior to heading to the store, I was forced to guess at what might fit. Once home, I found that A) the strand of lights barely stretched across the window frame, necessitating an extension cord to reach the outlet; B) the multi-colored assortment I had chosen came with a fun bonus feature, a “twinkling” variation leaving me constantly squinting to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating; and C) the best part of all, the frequent sound of the entire strand falling from the top of the window, as a few strategically placed pieces of

tape gave way. Every. Single. Night. On the hour, at least. How many days until Christmas? And with that, I have yet to begin the process of shopping, planning the Christmas Eve menu, or mailing out my photo card creations - another debacle if ever there was one. Suffice to say, in my haste to choose pictures and arrange them in the template I had selected, I neglected to “flip” the card over and notice it was, in fact, a postcard. How very traditional. Season’s Greetings from my apartment, where Christmas rarely goes off without a hitch, the lights never stop blinking, and the closet door may indeed fall off its hinges before the final present is wrapped. Darn, wrapping paper.

HARMONY CAFÉ
Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)
on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. The Christmas season officially began at Grace this past Saturday with the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Christkindl Market. The day began with the opening of the Market selling crafts, cookies and wreaths. The Nursery and Pre-K students, together with the Grace and St. Rose Choirs, sang several holiday
songs to a packed crowd. Of course, St. Nick was available to hear Christmas wishes. The children processed over to the Christmas Tree with his/ her homemade lanterns. Thank you Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Legislator James Kennedy, Town Councilman Thomas Hand, HGA President
Stephanie Carter and Rector, The Rev. Dr. Walter V. Hillebrand for leading the countdown. Community and celebration was the theme of the evening. Thank you parents, students, parishioners and neighbors who helped support this important event.

AIDS Education The Massapequa School District marked AIDS Awareness Week from November 27th through December 1st with a series of educational activities for students and the community. Members of Massapequa High School’s Peer AIDS Educators Club presented a series of skits for seventh- and eighthgraders at Berner Middle School during their physical education classes. The age-appropriate skits focused on ways to prevent transmission of the disease. The club also did
a series of AIDS awareness presentations for their peers at the high school. The Names Project provided large quilt panels at Berner, the high school and the Ames Campus, which were displayed throughout the week. Each panel consisted of pieces that were made in honor of someone who died because of AIDS. A public viewing was held in the high school auditorium on the evening of November 30th. The New York State Education Department mandates AIDS awareness as part of the health
curriculum, kindergarten through 12th grade. Massapequa coincides AIDS Awareness Week with World AIDS Day, which is observed on December 1st. “Instead of a just giving them a handout or showing them a video, we get students to teach their peers about HIV and AIDS,” said high school health teacher Michael LaBella, adviser of the Peer AIDS Educators Club. “It’s a more meaningful lesson, and students get an education that they can carry with them for their rest of their lives.”

The Town has partnered with Island Harvest for many programs throughout the years and most recently held two very successful relief supply donation drives after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma earlier this year. Attendees are also welcome to bring a new unwrapped toy to donate to the United States Marines Corp. Toys for Tots Collective Drive. In addition to the Holiday on Ice performance, other activities for attendees include an exhibition hockey game between the Elves and the Reindeer, which are two teams comprised of players from the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey program. Residents will also have an
opportunity to participate in the “Holiday Mail for Heroes” Program by filling out holiday greeting cards for brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces serving here in the homeland and abroad. Santa Claus is slated to make his annual visit to the Ice Skating Center, and will also be available to visit with children and take pictures. Due to the Holiday on Ice performance, the public skating sessions at the Center, which are normally held from 1 to 3 p.m. and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., will be cancelled that evening. However, the Town’s two outdoor rinks, located at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa and at Syosset-Woodbury Park will be open. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced a free Holiday on Ice Show will take place on Saturday, December 16th, starting at 4:30 p.m., at the Town’s Ice Skating Center - located in Bethpage Community Park, 1000 Stewart Avenue. Admission to the show is free. Skating students, including those from the Town’s Ice Skating Program, will perform an enchanting, holiday season themed skating exhibition. “This special holiday season performance is free and open to the public for their enjoyment,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Holiday on Ice provides local skaters a special chance to showcase their hard work and talents. We’ve got a great lineup of entertainment this year that I am sure will dazzle all those in attendance!” In keeping with this time of the year being “the season of giving,” and continuing the Town’s long-standing
