December’s Charity of the Month is:

Options Mental Health Residential Programs provide supportive housing opportunities for Long Island residents recovering from serious mental illness under the auspices of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH). Options services are person-centered, collaborative and recovery-oriented. Care coordinators help to improve individual health by arranging medical care, doctor visits, participation in mental health treatment and substance use disorder services, pediatric health and specialty services for children, linkage to community groups and resources and more. Additionally, the agency offers Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) to help individuals recovering from mental illness and/ or addiction.

Their agency operates a thrift shop located at 392 Hawkins Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma. This thrift shop is open Tuesday – Saturday and relies on donations and community volunteers. The shop can be contacted at (631) 676-4579 and is in need of volunteers to help with sorting, tagging, working the register and additional duties. Volunteers must be 18 or older. Additionally, this organization takes donations of personal hygiene items (shampoo, hand soap, lotion and toothbrushes) and household cleaning necessities (laundry detergent and cleaners.) Lastly, this organization is available to conduct presentations at schools or in the community regarding their programs and/or on matters pertaining to HIV/AIDS and mental illness. When to Abandon the “Thinking” Mind One cannot accomplish anything of great significance with the thinking mind in the way. As I sit down to write this week’s column, I notice that I am in my head, which will not do, so I turn my attention to Miles Davis’ Blue is Green song playing on my phone. The soothing rhythmic sound of jazz takes me out of my thinking mind and places my energy back to that intangible place where creativity is born. It’s between the dream-state consciousness and waking consciousness, where anything seems possible, and we do not question the validity of our ideas. While it’s true that our brain is the machine that powers and processes the application of practical knowledge, those magic “aha” moments that hit us seemingly out of nowhere and have the supernatural ability to transform our lives, make themselves known when we are doing just about anything other than “thinking.” If you’ve experienced this even once in your life, you surely know what I mean.

A 2016 article in The Atlantic, titled, “The Trippy State Between Wakefulness and Sleep” states, “There is a brief time, between waking and sleep, when reality begins to warp. Rigid conscious thought starts to dissolve into the gently lapping waves of early stage dreaming, and the world becomes a little more hallucinatory; your thoughts a little more untethered.” It’s that untethered state, when we forget about time and space, and who we are supposed to be, that we do not judge our ideas or our creative impulses. It’s similar to a young child’s state of consciousness, before they learn to be self-conscious and selfcritical. A January 2018 Wall Street Journal article titled, “For Babies, Life May Be A Trip,” states, “Fascinating new neuroscience research suggests that when adults dream or have psychedelic experiences, their brains are functioning more like children’s brains. It appears that the experience of babies and young children is more like dreaming

or tripping than like our usual grown-up consciousness.” She goes on to say, “Like most adults, I spend most of my waking hours thinking about getting things done. Scientists have discovered that when we experience the world in this way, the brain sends out signals along the established, stable, efficient networks that we develop as adults.” The part of the brain where adults tend to spend most of their waking hours will help keep you safe, get to work on time, and remember to pick up the dry cleaning, but it’s not your friend when it comes to living outside the box or taking creative risks. In order to experience life in a more dynamic, passionate and creative way, we need to develop strategies for breaking us out of the thinking, critical mind so that we are able to tap into the higher collective consciousness from where all creativity and inspired ideas flow forth. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!

Long Island has more AIDS cases than any other suburban community in the U.S. Options operates more than 50 scattered units of supportive housing for people living with HIV/ AIDS and provides additional Ryan White funded case management services for this vulnerable population. Affordable housing linked to services – provides low-income, disabled and formerly homeless people with the help they need to stay housed and live more independent, healthy and fulfilling lives.

More than 50 students at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus have left their mark on the school by contributing to a mural that promotes acceptance and inclusion. In the days before Thanksgiving, students worked together on the mural, which added color to a large white cinder block wall in a second-floor hallways of the building’s new wing. It features a tree in the center, surrounded by different colored shapes to represent a puzzle. Ninth-graders in Kristen Petersen and Jennifer Rabie’s integrated coteaching English language arts classes recently read John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men.” As part of their analysis of the book, they discussed the evolution of education for people with disabilities. Ms. Rabie said that students

reacted with heartache and disappointment upon learning that many children with special needs once did not have the same access to a good education. It wasn’t until 1975 that Congress passed the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. “We wanted to celebrate how far we’ve come,” Ms. Rabie said. The students then came up with an idea for a mural, to be inspired by a quote from the book, “Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you.” Student Ryan Mizsak designed the mural, and a final sketch was created by art teacher Nicole Hassell, who supervised students as they painted. The ELA students partnered with their peers from the school’s Community Career

SYMBOLS GIVE INSIGHT INTO IDENTITIES - Second-graders learned about symbols as part of the social studies curriculum in Michele Ritchie’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Student analyzed different American symbols and the meanings behind them. Each child then drew six symbols to represent his or her personality and interests. Massapequa Musicians Get AllCounty Nod More than 100 students from the Massapequa School District were selected for the 2019 AllCounty Music Festival, hosted by the Nassau Music Educators Association. Concert performances will be held in January at the Tilles Center. The largest contingent will come from Massapequa High School, where 34 student musicians were chosen.

They include: Isabella Quartiere (band); Joseph Casali, Makayla Mener, Mikayla Molloy, Meaghan O’Connor, Carli Sanger and Daniel Siani (chorus), James Kelly, Matthew Leibowitz, Christian Morano, Christian Scala and Christian Williams (mixed chorus), Jack Dubyn, Vincent Franco, Kayla Grady, Joshua Pastecchi, Katelyn Stealey, Mia Tichacek and Joseph

Vaglio (orchestra); and Sarah Benedict, Claudia Bragg, Alayna Carroll, Samantha Carroll, Antoinette Corigliano, Jaclyn Deternova, Alison Hennelly, Maria Leonardi, Kimberly Livingston, Nicole Malatino, Julianna Mpazicos, Abigail Nocella, Emily Painton, Jenny Testaverde and Melissa Wright (treble choir).

After their efforts helping local residents during a kitchen fire, two Massapequa High School students were asked to serve on the school’s safety committee. Sophomores Thomas Lippolt and Scott Rathjen had stayed after school for winter sports tryouts on November 15th and were walking home west on Merrick Road when they came across a young boy yelling for help. A fire broke out in the oven and the young boy’s older brother, a classmate at Massapequa High School, was trying to put it out with water. Scott went inside, his shirt pulled over his face because of the smoke, and led the older brother outside. He went back in to rescue the young boy’s hamster, then went to the basement and turned off the electricity. When the electricity was turned

off, it alerted an upstairs tenant of the situation, and was able to leave safely. Thomas, after calling 911, went next door to a dentist’s office and grabbed a fire extinguisher, which he used to put out the flames as Scott used the flashlight on his phone to find the oven through the smoke. After knocking down the fire, they opened windows to let the smoke out. By then, emergency responders were arriving and Thomas and Scott spoke to police officers and firefighters. The following day, an officer from the Seventh Precinct called Principal Brian Conboy to tell them about the heroic efforts of the two students. Mr. Conboy immediately asked Thomas and Scott to join the school’s safety committee, a group of administrators, teachers and students

who review existing safety protocols and make recommendations for enhancements. They participated in their first meeting on Nov. 28. “To be able to think clearly in an emergency situation, not everyone can do that,” Mr. Conboy said. “The decisions that these fine young me had to make could have saved lives and somebody’s home.” Scott, whose grandfather retired after 38 years in the New York City Fire Department, noted the importance of staying calm in an emergency situation. He said he was happy that no one got hurt and that the family was still able to live in the house. “I’m always happy to help anyone that needs it,” added Thomas. “That’s what you’re supposed to do. When someone asks for help, you give it.”
