Town Seeks Coaches
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town is seeking experienced coaches for its successful Youth Ice Hockey and House League Program. “While the Town’s program maintains popularity year-round, the cooler weather brings with it a greater participation in our youth ice hockey program,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town is looking for experienced hockey coaches looking for a fun and rewarding way to spend their time. What better way to hone your hockey skills than helping our youth improve theirs?” The Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey Program is underway at the indoor Ice Skating Center, open year round. Students See Impact Of Holiday Food Drive The generosity of students from Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District will be felt throughout the community during the holiday season. Donations from a recent food drive were delivered to the St. Rose of Lima Church food pantry to benefit families in Massapequa. On Nov. 27, an SUV was filled with all of the food collected in the preceding weeks and brought to the food pantry. That afternoon, 21 students arrived to sort the donations, which included canned vegetables, cereal,
cake and brownie mix, condiments, mashed potatoes, rice, stuffing, gravy, snacks and more. Members of the student council as well as the sixth, seventh and eighth grade class officers met with Marianne Meyer from the St. Rose of Lima parish outreach center, who told them about the food pantry, who it serves, why people may be in need and the importance of keeping a stock of many different types of food to ensure that everyone’s nutritional needs are met. She also said the pantry isn’t limited to just food, as it also keeps
a supply of toiletries and hygiene items. Student Council advisers Kristen Meoli and Denise Robertson said that having the students go to the food pantry to sort items and learn about its mission gives them greater perspective on the importance of charity. “It’s nice to know that you’re helping out a lot of people,” said eighth grader Josh Holden, the student council president. “To help out people who are less fortunate, it gives you a good feeling. It’s nice to be a part of it beyond just donating food.”

Birch Buddies Build Birdhouses

As part of their thoughtful Thursday routine, students in Kim Kelly’s third grade class at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District regularly partner with their peers from around the school to work on projects that benefit the community.
Students were inspired by the Diane Alber book, “Sticks,” that has messages about courage, friendship and perseverance. Ms. Kelly explained that the motto in her classroom is “We all paint a better picture together.” During a recent buddy activity, Ms. Kelly’s third
graders worked with students throughout the school to build birdhouses for the courtyard. A different class visited each week to help out with a different stage of the project, from designing and building the birdhouses, to decorating them.
Sixth Graders Are In Writing Form The Sumerian language of Mesopotamia is widely regarded as the oldest written language on Earth, dating back to at least 3500 B.C. Sixth graders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School district explored these ancient writings to understand how people communicated thousands of years ago and how historians have used these etchings to better understand the culture.
Social studies teacher Vanessa Canning noted that the sixth grade curriculum focuses on ancient civilizations. She wants her students to understand why writing is important because it preserves history for future generations. Ms. Canning explained that Cuneiform, the writing system adopted by the ancient Sumerians, used a system of characters

As a culminating activity, her students made nameplates of their own first names by using certain characters to represent the letters of the modern alphabet.

Students, Veterans Make Connections

Children were able to experience history by listening to those who lived it at the annual Veterans Day program at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on Nov. 7. Veterans visited classrooms to tell their stories and answer students’ questions about their service and life after the military. Assistant Principal Mary Anne Ferraro said that 47 veterans attended the program, all related to McKenna students. Each classroom, kindergarten through fifth grade, had at least one visitor. The guests ranged from veterans who fought in World War II to those currently serving, and represented
all branches of the armed forces. Richard Grodski, who was in the Navy during the Korean War, enjoyed the interaction with the students. He said his hope was that they gained an appreciation for the sacrifices that veterans have made. “The program was tremendous and the kids had great questions,” he said. “The whole thing was very, very well done.” After speaking in classrooms, veterans visited the Hall of Heroes. The hallway leading from the auditorium to the gymnasium was transformed with patriotic artwork made by students from kindergarten
through fifth grade. It also included photo slideshow and a display of memorabilia loaned to the school by the veterans, including helmets, jackets, photographs and medals. Children showed their appreciation in many other ways such as in Lisa Mullin’s fourth grade class where they shook the hands of the five veterans who visited and made thank-you cards and posters. Students and staff also wore red, white and blue to school. “The event was a success,” Ms. Ferraro said. “Our goal was to connect veterans and students and to learn through discussion.”

Students Spread Goodwill Ten students from the Massapequa High School Ames Campus stepped out of the classroom and into the kitchen for a few hours on Nov. 25 to participate in a meaningful community service activity. Ninth graders from the Helping Hands club visited the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park to do some baking. Upon arriving, students received a tour of the facility, where families stay while a child is undergoing medical treatment at a nearby hospital. They also learned about
the many services the Ronald McDonald House offers and how it is fully supported from donations and volunteers. The students, who were accompanied by advisers Nicole Reiss and Tara Camilleri, then worked in the kitchen to bake brownies, cookies, crumb cake and cupcakes for the families. Ninth grader Sophia Diaz, who helped make the brownies, said it was her first time there and she gained perspective on the positive impact that volunteer service can have on the lives of others.
Emma Mastroberti said she understands that the families staying there are dealing with difficult situations and it is important to be there for them. Fellow Helping Hands member Amelia Caselnova explained that it was nice to see people of all ages giving their time and was appreciative that her school provided her with an opportunity to contribute. “It was good to see how people care about others,” she said. “It was a great experience and I definitely would do it again.”

Berner Middle School students gathered in the library to deliberate if their peers were guilty of being a bully or a bystander, part of an exercise to foster a positive school climate. All seventh graders in the Massapequa School District took part in the mock court cases during the last two weeks of October. The BRAVE program — Bullying Reduction and Violence Education — includes a three-day workshop for seventh graders each fall during their health classes. At the first meeting, students
receive information about bullying and harassment, are introduced to the Dignity for All Students Act and learn strategies to stop bullying. The second day features a skit, in which students participate in a mock court case based on a cyberbullying scenario. Students were assigned different roles including judge, attorneys and jurors. For the final session, they discuss the court case, determine if any of the “defendants” are guilty and, if so, what the consequences should be. “They decide as a group, so there’s some really
good conversation,” social worker Marisa Boulukos said. “The objective is to raise awareness of the effects of bullying on school climate, and help students realize how much power they have to positively impact the social climate of the building.” Ms. Boulukos added that the BRAVE program supports the district’s social and emotional learning goals and helps students understand how the choices they make affect themselves, their peers and the school community.
Making Days A Little Brighter The creativity of Massapequa High School students will help make the days a little brighter for children on Long Island battling cancer. Students in Penny Schneider’s Studio in Sculpture class are designing a puppet theater set for The Morgan Center, a preschool in Brightwaters that provides a safe learning and socialization environment for youngsters undergoing cancer treatment. The high school students worked either independently or in
small groups to create puppet theater sets. The 10 models were displayed in the classroom and students, teachers and administrators were welcome to stop in and vote on their favorites. Ms. Schneider said that the finalists will be sent to the Morgan Center, which will select the winning design. The fullsize set will then be built by technology students in James DeSantis’ class. “There are so many good designs, they’re going to have a very hard time
selecting the winner,” Ms. Schneider said. “The student did such a good job.” The set will provide a new activity for children at The Morgan Center to put on their own puppet shows. Ms. Schneider said that because many children at the preschool have compromised immune systems, the art students will also provide them with puppets that can be easily cleaned. To raise money for those, they will be selling Hope Rocks featuring their personalized designs.
