Upon completion of the course, you will be more conﬁdent in identifying ASD behaviors, understanding effective engagement and communication techniques, and successfully interacting with someone with ASD. Councilwoman Walsh Cautions Residents Not To Fall Victim To Holiday Scams Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Vicki Walsh cautions residents to be on alert of potential telephone and internet scams this Holiday Season, particularly those soliciting any personal information or monetary contribution. “Time and time again we hear about scammers trying to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting residents, especially our

senior citizens,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Whether on the phone or online, scammers often pose as officials from the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration or other well-known agency in an attempt to intimidate the recipient.” The Councilwoman noted that many times, their return phone numbers can also be falsified to appear as

a familiar number. In addition to seniors, others frequently targeted include students and firstgeneration Americans. Current common scams include offers of debt relief, car warranty extensions, and credit repairs. Scammers have also been known to pose as family members allegedly in trouble and seeking money. “The last thing families need, especially during

these uncertain times, is someone trying to scam them out of their hardearned money,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “We alert all residents to be wary of any unsolicited phone calls and websites that appear suspicious, especially those requesting money or personal information, even if they claim to be from a government or bank entity.” You can take these

proactive steps to ensure you and your family aren’t scam victims: If you receive a call from a number you do not recognize, do not answer the phone. If you do, hang up the phone immediately. Don’t press numbers to speak to a live operator or take your number off the list, as this just confirms your phone number. Ask your phone company whether they charge for blocking phone numbers.

Don’t trust your caller ID. Scammers use the internet to make calls all over the world. Don’t click on any suspicious links or attachments in emails and on websites. Young Bakers Give Back Massapequa High School’s aspiring culinary artists are also philanthropists, as students recently participated in the Bake For Good initiative. Students in the College Art of Baking, Cooking for Today and Food and Nutrition classes completed a service learning project by baking hundreds of dinner rolls, which are being donated to local food pantries. Materials were provided by the King Arthur Baking Company including flour and yeast. Every student also received a culinary

bench scraper and recipe books with ideas for bread, cinnamon rolls and pizza. Following the Bake for Good concept, each group baked two loaves of bread – one to keep and one to donate. Students prepared the dough on Nov. 16, and then shaped it the following day. Culinary Arts teacher Christina Sabbiondo said that the donation loaves were turned into rolls, which will be given to the food pantries at YES Community Counseling Center and St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa. With nine culinary

arts classes taught by Ms. Sabbiondo and Courtney Puricelli, approximately 200 students participated in the initiative. They baked enough rolls to fill more than 40 bags. “It’s a win-win,” Ms. Sabbiondo said. “They get to learn about baking bread and also learn about giving back to their community.” Using the loaves of bread to keep, students celebrated their successful charitable endeavor with a French toast party at the end of the week.

Town Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks Now Open

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto announced that the Town’s outdoor ice skating rinks at Marjorie R. Post and Syosset-Woodbury Community Parks have officially opened for the season. “Ice skating is a fun activity for residents of all ages to enjoy, and the Town’s outdoor ice rinks provide the perfect setting to relax, unwind, and take in the wonderful winter atmosphere,” said Councilman Imbroto. “Our outdoor ice rink facilities

are the perfect antidote to combating cabin fever during the winter months, and are the ideal way to help make coping with the cold fun and enjoyable!” Public Skating Sessions are hosted at both outdoor rinks on Fridays from 4pm-6pm and 7pm-9pm, Saturdays from 1pm3pm, 4pm-6pm, and 7pm9pm, and Sundays from 1pm-3pm and 4pm-6pm. During Holiday Breaks, a special schedule takes effect, which is available on oysterbaytown.com. Also, for those who wish

to take advantage of ice skating but do not wish to be outdoors, the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is open year-round and is located at 1001 Stewart Ave. in Bethpage.
