Massapequa High School Football Team Secures Championship Victory

he Massapequa High School Chiefs captured the Long Island championship with a 35-7 victory over William Floyd High School on Friday, November 24th. This marks their second Long Island title earned in the last three seasons and fourth in their program history. They exemplified perseverance by crafting a remarkable season, embracing victory despite a season ending knee injury that took out their senior star quarterback, Paul Dulanto, at their season opener. The Chiefs continued their season against all odds, forcing junior backup quarterback Joey Diesso, to take the reins at an attempt for the championship. With unwavering support from his teammates and coaches, Diesso, would ultimately lead a strong offensive line for Massapequa resulting in their 12-0 season. This triumph will certainly be engraved in history for Massapequa High School. The 30 seniors were instrumental in the team’s success all season long through their leadership on and off the field. The resilience displayed by the entire team throughout the season is evidence of the dedication and skill of these exceptional young athletes. A World Of Kindness Begins At Birch Lane

World Kindness Day on Nov. 13 was a chance to celebrate a message that is part of daily life at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students are reminded every day to not only be kind to each other in school, but to spread that kindness wherever they go. During recess, students rotated through different stations that were led by lunch recess aides and volunteers from the PTA’s

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee. The youngsters covered the blacktop in happy and kind messages and images using sidewalk chalk. They also took a kindness pledge by adding their names to one of the letters in “INCLUDE.” The large letters, signed by Birch Lane’s 670 students, will now hang in general purpose room along with last year’s signed letters spelling out “KIND.” Kindergarten and first

graders played a hot potato game with a beach ball. When the music stopped, the student holding it had to identify an act of kindness that was on the ball. For students in grades 2-5, they passed beach balls over their heads and down a line. When it reached the end, the last child had to run up and grab a card with scenario. Together, the group had to determine if it stated a kind or unkind act. Students and staff were

encouraged to wear shirts with messages of kindness. There was also a pair of assemblies by singer and songwriter Jared Campbell. His original songs promoted positive character-building messages. Mr. Campbell explained that his goal was to inspire students through music to be world changers, and that starts by working to make their school a better place through kindness. Birch Lane Principal

Stephen Aspetti and Assistant Principal Joyce Larkin noted that kindness is emphasized every day to set a positive tone in the school. When social and emotional learning is at the forefront, they explained, it creates an environment that fosters all other learning. “World Kindness Day serves as a reminder of the positive impact that kindness can have on individuals, communities

and the world,” Mr. Aspetti said. “It encourages people to perform intentional acts of kindness and foster a culture of compassion and generosity. Lockhart Honors Massapequa Veterans In Patriotic Ceremony Chants of “U-S-A, U-S-A” broke out in the hallways of Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on Nov. 9 as local veterans walked the first floor, the culmination of the annual Veterans Day ceremony. Students wearing red, white and blue cheered their nation’s heroes to show gratitude for their service and sacrifice.

Before the patriotic march through the hall, veterans were recognized at an assembly in the allpurpose room. The crowd included students in grades 3-5, district administrators, local elected officials and Lockhart parents. Veterans from Massapequa VFW Post 7763 and AmVets Post 88 were the honored guests. They represented multiple

branches of the military as well as different eras of service. The chorus, under the director of Kathleen Dyckman, opened the program by singing the national anthem, and closed it out with “America, Of Thee I Sing” and “God Bless America.” Student council members spoke about the history and meaning of

Veterans Day. “Veterans Day is a special holiday that honors those who served, our POWs and those who are currently serving,” Principal Michael DeLuca said, adding that their “service and sacrifice represents the best of America.” VFW Post Commander William Colfer said Massapequa was a

community built by veterans following World War II. When he had to leave home to serve in Vietnam, seeing the American flag provided a source of comfort for him. “Our flag, more than anything else, symbolizes what our country is all about – freedom,” he told students. “It’s our flag, all of us.”

Assistant Principal Louisa Vecchione read a poem, “I am a Veteran.” An officer from the Nassau County Police Department played taps. A video roll call featured the names, photos, ranks and military branches of family members of Lockhart students and staff who have served or are currently serving.

Officials announced a new initiative that further demonstrates the critical role local businesses play in our community – this time through public safety. The Chamber is piloting a new program to designate businesses as “Safe Spots” with training to aid people in emergency situations

and connect them to lifesaving resources. Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “The Massapequa Chamber of Commerce created Operation Safe Spot to ensure residents feel safe when out shopping, improve emergency response, and connect those in need with lifesaving resources. Through Operation Safe Spot, local business owners are background-checked and trained to aid people in emergency situations. They’re connected to local resources like our amazing Nassau County Police Department, and they’re available as a safe

spot if residents are feeling unsafe or unwell. Saladino, Town Board Announce Free ‘Holiday On Ice’ Show Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board are pleased to announce the Annual ‘Holiday on Ice’ Show is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 16th at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located in Bethpage Community Park, 1001 Stewart Avenue.
