The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has received a grant from the Plastic Surgery Foundation to enable the program to provide information about breast reconstruction. The funds will be used to create bilingual educational materials in print and online. Two bilingual social workers regularly meet with breast cancer patients at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) Breast and/or Oncology Clinic and address disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients. I have not been a student of the Lindenhurst school district since 2000; but, come every Homecoming, I am there - along the parade route, in the stands, on the sidelines - snapping pictures for this very paper and cheering on the home team with the rest of the crowd, many of them fellow alumni. And last weekend, I was among the thousands who tuned in to watch the Lindy Bulldogs defeat the Oceanside Sailors in the Long Island Tournament - Division I Final, following their perfect 12-0 season. What a proud moment it was, to see this team go all the way for the very first time in their storied history, supported by their throng of loyal fans.

as a mere dream back in September turned into victory parades through town and more recognition than any individual could have ever hoped to receive. Even still, it remains a team victory; no man above the rest, all united in their Lindy Pride. Browsing through some of the many videos shared on social media following the victory, I came across one that appeared to be posted immediately following, taken during the post-game meeting of coaches and players. As the head coach praised the outstanding accomplishments of the season, he made sure to mention the town, the people, the community they all called home - without them, he said, none of this would have been possible. And that, in the end, is the most humbling achievement of all. Seventeen years later, I remain a proud Bulldog. Always.

And later that night, as the team buses returned to the streets of Lindy, they were met by hundreds of proud community members lining the route, stretching from town hall all the way to the high school. What a wonderful sight to behold, to witness an entire town rally behind a team, an organization, a common cause. I imagine many towns across Long Island have experienced this at one time or another; it is this type of camaraderie which forges a connection that cannot be broken. Years later, residents will remember moments like these, and pass them along to their children and grandchildren. Perhaps this particular occasion was made all the more special coming as it did at the start of the holiday season, providing an added element to an already-festive atmosphere. What began

HARMONY CAFÉ!
Harmony Café is one of more than 60 community cafés in America and abroad with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, affordable and delicious meals to all who walk through their door. They are a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. Their philosophy is that everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the chance to eat healthy food while being treated with dignity. When one enters the Harmony Café, there is a suggested donation of $10 to dine and enjoy the entertainment provided. Guests can pay the suggested donation, pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a fresh meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. I recently met with Rosemarie McCarthy, Director and Founder of Long Island’s first community café, Harmony Café. She stressed the importance of not only feeding one’s stomach, but feeding their soul as well. At Harmony Café, each meal is offered over 2 ½ hours and is always accompanied with live music. Rosemarie mentioned that, “There is a great need to have social connections; it is essential to one’s overall health and well-being.” Therefore, she spotlights the importance of engaging in conversation with one another at her events. The business model for these types of cafés isn’t one that is easy to get off the ground; therefore, as of now, Harmony
Café only offers one 2 ½ hour event - a fresh meal and entertainment - on the second Wednesday of each month. Harmony Café currently operates out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, Rosemarie has a goal for Harmony Café to have a storefront in the Patchogue area that will be open five days a week for lunch and dinner. The following volunteer positions are needed: event planning committee volunteers; a volunteer coordinator assistant; servers and kitchen help volunteers; community advocate/ outreach volunteers; and, most importantly, she needs volunteers to help fundraise, and volunteer board members (passionate people who can give a minimum of 10 hours a month to help plan ahead and discuss the organization’s needs and wants). Rosemarie mentioned that she values passion over experience in these areas because experience can always be gained! Continued From 6 funding from the Plastic Surgery Foundation will allow us to enhance the dialogue between the social workers and patients about breast reconstruction, as this is an option and right that many women are not aware of, specifically underserved populations.” Federal law signed in 1998 requires health group insurance plans to cover breast reconstruction and New York State requires healthcare professionals to discuss reconstruction with patients prior to cancer removing surgery. Bilingual social workers address barriers that interfere with the continuity of treatment including transportation, food, legal services and financial needs. Efforts are made to connect patients to community agencies and coalitions and help facilitate applications. In addition, patients are offered the opportunity to address issues related to reconstruction. Each patient is encouraged to explore her unique feelings and needs surrounding her breast cancer diagnosis and upcoming surgery. By providing a safe place to discuss body image, intimacy and fears, each patient is enabled to make an informed decision reflecting her unique needs. Social Workers are also available to support each patient throughout the process and help to facilitate ongoing communication with her plastic surgeon and treatment team. Meet your neighbor, Laura Maier! Laura owns four successful franchised businesses on Long Island, with three more currently under construction! Surprisingly, she was not always an entrepreneur; instead, she previously worked in two corporate positions, one as a director at a healthcare consulting company, and one as an Assistant Director of Provider Enrollment at North Shore LIJ. Growing up in New Jersey, she enjoyed going to Dairy Queen so much; but when she moved to Long Island in 2002, she realized there were none in existence here. After working in corporate positions for a while, she felt the urge to own her own business and become more involved in her community. In 2013, Mrs. Maier opened the first Dairy Queen on Long Island in Massapequa. Since then, she opened two more - one in Levittown and one in Huntington, and she has one more on the way in East Northport. Laura grew interested in Jersey Mike’s Subs, as they were new to Long Island as well, and continued on to open their 7th store on the island in Farmingdale with her husband, Jeff Maier. They have two more locations under construction – one in Massapequa Park and one in Lindenhurst. As a franchise owner, she loves to have her independence, yet still receives guidance from corporate. Laura gets involved in her community through charitable events at her restaurants’ locations. Every year, all of her Dairy Queen locations have one day where they raise money to go
directly to Cohen’s Children’s Hospital, a charity she holds dear to her heart. Throughout the year, they contribute other donations to Cohen’s and run fundraisers for schools and other charitable organizations. As for her Jersey Mike’s Sub’s locations, they partner with one charity during their first month in business to donate a portion of that month’s proceeds to their cause. Her newest location in Farmingdale has partnered with the Farmingdale PTA during their first month in business, contributing donations to Farmingdale elementary, middle and high schools. Lastly, every year, all of her Jersey Mike’s Subs restaurants participate in what they call the Month of Giving, which is when they chose a day in March and donate all of their sales for the day to an organization of their choice. Of course, not every aspect of owning a business is so cheerful; there are always struggles as well. Laura mentioned that her biggest struggle is the battle of affording the rising minimum wage without increasing her prices, so she can keep her prices competitive. With that being said, she still feels it’s all worth it because she loves what she does and works with a great team, one that is truly like family to her. Laura has been voted businessperson of the year in 2015 by the Massapequa Republican Club and was listed in the Top 50 Women in Business in 2016 by Long Island Business News. Students and staff at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District were in the giving spirit in the week leading up to Thanksgiving. They donated enough items to fill up a car during the annual holiday food drive sponsored by the Student Council. On November 17th, members of the Student Council and representatives from each homeroom carried boxes and bags filled with nonperishable food items to health teacher Denise Robertson’s car, who then brought the items to the food pantry at St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa. The food will help local families throughout the holiday season. “The school community came together to help others,” Ms. Robertson said. “We had outstanding participation and the generosity was overwhelming.”

On December 12th, Massapequa Water Customers will vote for a candidate for a vacant commissioner position. The person elected would be one of three commissioners. The election is contested with two candidates running for the one position. As a Certified Public Accountant, Fraud Examiner and Internal Control Auditor, I have the skills and experience that are needed to provide fiscal oversight for operations. I have successfully worked with government agencies and legislators, both Federal and State, and built an accounting firm serving as President for over 25 years. As an elected Massapequa School Board trustee for the past nine years (3 terms) I have served as President, Vice-President and Secretary and have the experience working with Superintendents and the community. In addition to my qualifications above, I am a mother and life-long resident of Massapequa Park and deeply concerned over the future quality of our water for generations. Children are never too young to learn about engineering, and firstgraders are off to a fast start at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. During a recent STEAM project, that focused on skills in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math, students had to become
outside-the-box thinkers by coming up with ways to use boxes differently. The youngsters worked in pairs and thought up ways to transform small black boxes into something different. Available materials included tongue depressors, straws, pipe cleaners, pom poms and construction paper. Some of the ideas
included chairs, animals, houses and spaceships. Magnet and STEAM teacher Jennifer Tand said that the project encouraged the young engineers to use their imaginations and also taught them how to work well with others. Teamwork was key to creating a successful final product.

For the past few months, our daughter Aliyah has been in the hospital battling AML leukemia instead of completing her first semester at college. Association that featured 36 teams from several countries. Arguments took place at the Southern District Courthouse with experienced judges and lawyers evaluating each team’s performance. Junior Antoinette Corigliano, one of the captains of the “B” team, who played the role of lead defense attorney, won an Outstanding Attorney Award. She ranked sixth overall out of more than 240 students who qualified. She said being a member of Mock Trial helps build her confidence and improve her public speaking abilities. Massapequa High School’s Mock Trial teams recently took part in competitions that gave students practical experience in the law field. The “A” team, led by social studies teacher Daniel Bachman, attended the Harvard Mock Trial High School Seminar Program. Students received information on a case, and then had two days to prepare. Massapequa’s team defeated a team from Georgia in arguments. The students went on to the Mentor Moot Court Tournament, which featured a mock Supreme Court argument. Massapequa advanced to the semifinals. The team is now preparing for the Nassau County Bar Association’s mock trial competition which will be held in February at the county courthouse and features a single-elimination-style format. The team has been competing in this event for decades and won the county championship in 2012. The “B” team, under the leadership of social studies teacher John Pardue, went to Times Square for the five-day Empire Mock Trial, an event hosted by the American Bar

Talking Up a Storm Ninth-graders in meteorology classes at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus studied hurricanes and recently presented their interactive reports. Students worked in pairs to study nine storms, ranging from Hurricane Iniki in 1992 to Hurricane Matthew in 2016, along with Hurricane Irene which hit Long Island as a tropical storm in 2011. In PowerPoint presentations, each team presented facts about its assigned storm such as when it happened, its path
and the damage that it caused. They also included charts with measurements of wind speeds, air pressure, rainfall and storm surges, along with pictures, video clips and satellite images. Teacher Nicholas Donohue said that students learned the properties of hurricanes as well as the differences among individual storms. They developed an understanding of how hurricanes form, how forecasters track storms and how building codes have been affected.
Students Sound Off
The students used their Chromebooks to research hurricanes using data from the National Weather Service and to create their presentations. The meteorology course is an elective for students who have already taken earth science. Topics are tied in with the current seasons, which is why students learned about hurricanes in the fall. As the year progresses, they will learn how to read computer models to forecast the weather.
First-graders in Kimberly Kelly’s class at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned about the properties of sound, such as pitch and volume, using whistles and miniature maracas. Students explored
these principles using the Claim-Support-Question method, a thinking routine that helps them identify generalizations, reason with evidence and make counterarguments. As part of the experiment, to discover how sound travels over distance,

practice field at Berner Middle School with a new synthetic turf multipurpose field with striping for three sports, subsurface drainage system, pre-engineered spectator bleachers and concrete pad, ADA accessible ramp and stairs leading to the practice field, and adjoining retaining wall repairs. If approved by voters, $19.575 million of the total cost of $28.575 million for Proposition #1 will be bonded. The district will utilize $9 million from its capital reserve to fund the remainder of the cost. Proposition #2, for a total cost not to exceed $13.225 million, would install classroom air conditioners districtwide. If approved, this multizone split system would replace the approximately 220 units currently utilized in select classes. The benefits would include lower energy consumption costs, more efficient supply of conditioned air, individual
classroom temperature control and improved indoor air quality. The total cost of both Proposition #1 and Proposition #2 is approximately $41.8 million; however, the district would receive 53.3 percent of the project’s total cost through New York State Building Aid. The bond vote is scheduled for Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018 from 6 a.m.-9 p.m. at Massapequa High School, Fairfield Elementary School, Lockhart Elementary School and McKenna Elementary School. More information on the projects will be made available through the district’s website, www. msd.k12.ny.us, and via a voter guide mailed to all community residents. Fourth-graders used technology to celebrate Thanksgiving at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Using Google Slides on their Chromebooks, children customized images of turkeys. With the assistance of teacher Lisa Burke and
technology learning coach Vickie Ahearn, students were able to select from a wide array of eyes, beaks, feathers, feet and hats to create their images in the Build a Turkey project. They could also choose a background. Ms. Ahearn explained that it gave students an introduction to Google
Slides, a program they will be using for many years to create interactive presentations. The project also supported literacy instruction as children wrote short narratives about what they are thankful for this year to accompany their turkey images.

Expanding their Limits
In an effort to refine and improve their artistic skills, students in the studio art class at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus have recently been working on acrylic painting projects. The ninth-grade
artists were tasked with painting a close-up of an object or subject to learn how to capture more detail in their work. Teacher Tildy BeckerDeLuca said students practiced artistic skills
such as blending and color layering. Objects that students painted include their pets, flowers, eyes, seashells and watercolor paint palettes.
Digital Art Young artists at Birch Lane Elementary School recently traded in their markers and paintbrushes for computers as they got their first chance to explore the digital arts. The Massapequa School District’s expansion of its 1:1 Chromebook initiative to the upper elementary grades is giving teachers in all subject areas an opportunity to create technology-based lessons. Birch Lane fourth-graders
arrived in Melinda Gibbons’ art room with their devices in hand to do a photo editing assignment. The students learned how to work with layers to make changes to the famous Mona Lisa painting by adding hats, sunglasses and background objects using Chromebook app Pixlr Editor. Ms. Gibbons explained that the purpose of the project was to give students a basic knowledge of computer graphics and
show them that there is more to photo editing than just adding filters to pictures taken on a camera phone. The assignment gave students a head start if they eventually take computer art, new media and digital photography courses offered at Massapequa High School. As a followup project, the fourthgraders will take their own digital photos outside and edit them on the computer.

A Team Effort The computer programmers of tomorrow are getting their start at a young age at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. First-graders in Kimberly Kelly’s class recently teamed up with
second-graders in Janeen Signorile’s class to do basic computer coding. Students paired up and worked on Chromebooks using the program Kodable. They learned how to make a digital robot move forward, spin
and jump through basic programming language. Children learned about sequence and algorithms while developing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
