Did You Know? Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala! This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. Admission is $50 and VIP admission is $350. To purchase a ticket, please visit

Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Needed

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program seeks breast cancer survivors of all ages, race and ethnicity--men as well as women--to become volunteers. Thus, the program seeks a diverse group of volunteers to reflect the diversity of the people who are calling the hotline.
The three-day training program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays— January 14, 21 and 28, from 10am to 1 pm at Adelphi University in Garden City. This in-depth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community. “It is so important for
people who call our hotline to speak with someone who has been there,’” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, volunteer and hotline coordinator. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced that children can send their ‘holiday wish list’ directly to Old St. Nick at the North Pole through a special network of Santa’s Mailboxes which arrived in Town facilities from the North Pole. Mailboxes will accept letters now through Monday, December 16th. The Town of Oyster Bay will forward letters to Santa at the North Pole. Letters received by Monday, December 16th with a legible name and return address will be answered by Santa before the holiday.

Sal Messina
January 17, 1943 - November 26, 2019 Salvatore Messina, of West Islip, passed away November 26, 2019. He was 76. Sal was born in New York City on January 17, 1943, to Vincent & Frances (nee D’Angelo) Messina. Sal owned & operated The Fruit Tree in Copiague from 1970 until he sold it in 2011. Throughout this time Sal also had stores in Massapequa, Lindenhurst and Florida. Everyone in the community knew Sal and enjoyed seeing and talking to him as he walked through the store greeting customers by their names. He was always there to help people in the community when they needed anything. Sal grew up in the produce business with his family in Manhattan. He learned at a young age that outstanding customer service along with quality products is the key to success. His family was a tremendous influence on him throughout his career. On May 18, 1996, he married his beloved wife Angela (nee Antonacci). In addition to his wife, Angela, he is survived by his cherished twin daughters, Francesca Messina & Arianna Messina. Sal is the dear brother of Francine Messina Rizzo, as well as the late, Peter Messina, Catherine Messina, Josephine Messina Troyano. He is also survived by his loving granddaughter, Mia, his daughter in law, Jennifer and nephews and nieces, Vincent, Debbie, Susan Messina, John, Marc, Dawn, Vincent and Joanna Troyano, Michelle Street, Salvatore, Robert & Jamie Rizzo. I was lucky enough to know Sal for over 35 years. I was always amazed at his ability to keep everything under control no matter what was going on. I looked foward to working with him each week. He was much more than a customer. He was a friend, and I will miss him.

Town Seeks Coaches
The big meal may have been a few days away, but third graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District had a warm up for their Thanksgiving feasts
with turkey and all of the trimmings on Nov. 25. And just like the holiday, they were able to spend time with their families as parents, grandparents and other special guests joined
students for lunch in their classrooms. Before sitting down to eat, children put on a skit about the first Thanksgiving.
Students are spreading kindness beyond the walls of Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District as they look to brighten the lives of others in their community. On Oct. 25, third graders from Kimberly Kelly’s class visited the Parkview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Massapequa to present them with colorful seasonal artwork.
Throughout October, students in Ms. Kelly’s class worked together with their peers in several others classes at Birch Lane to create fall- and Halloween-themed artwork. The completed pieces were affixed to large white paper, and Ms. Kelly, Assistant Principal Joyce Larkin and several students visited Parkview afterschool to deliver the

Families Share In Feast At Unqua Students Bring Kindness To Seniors murals. Students were able to meet many of the seniors who will get to enjoy their work. Ms. Kelly said that it was a schoolwide project as students from kindergarten through fifth grade contributed. “Kindness is contagious,” Ms. Kelly said, “and the best way to spread it is to see the joy it brings to other people.”

LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations.
