Christmas Child

he third graders from Grace Day School participated in an outreach project called Operation Christmas Child. They joined the efforts with children throughout the U.S. to deliver shoeboxes to more boys and girls in over 130 countries. Each third grader filled two shoeboxes with basic necessities that are hard to come by for children in need, which will be delivered to children across the globe.

Officials in the Massapequa School District are preparing contingency plans for their bussed students in the wake of layoffs and Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection filed by Atlantic Express Transportation Corp. — one of the largest fleet of yellow school busses used by school districts across Long Island. During Chapter 11 bankruptcy a company continues to operate while it tries to work out a reorganization plan. However, district officials say the potential for interruption in service could take place during the month of December. “We want to assure our residents that we are well aware of what is at stake if Atlantic Express ceases operation,” said Massapequa Deputy Superintendent Alan Adcock. “We are making

Black Friday. As I sit here writing my column from home at 11:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, my alarm clock is set for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why, you ask, would I subject myself to the madness that has become a tradition for thousands of manic shoppers desperately scouring stores for the best bargains? Because it’s fun. Although, I will admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea until recently. Prior to my first Black Friday shopping experience, I was one who would wait until the week of Christmas to even begin, occasionally

even making a last-minute mall run on Christmas Eve. No list, no direction – just aimless wandering until the “perfect” gift caught my eye. I hated shopping and everything that came with it – the crowds, the long lines, the even longer return/ exchange lines… all of it. Well, the lack of preparation remains the same. Still no list, no real ideas to speak of… but I have developed a bit more tolerance for the shopping end of things. Perhaps now that I am older and have more means to show my appreciation to those I love, I see the value in putting a bit more effort into things.

The teams then performed against each other using the skills they learned through the Harvard Method. “What was most amazing about this experience was watching the team prepare an 86page case pattern in two days,” said Dan Bachman, the team’s advisor. “The students worked from first thing in the morning until they went to bed. They demonstrated an intellectual level of perseverance that was astonishing to watch. The team will undoubtedly operate on a higher level this year, giving them a major advantage in the upcoming competitions.” The team learned about the opportunity from one of Harvard’s High School Seminar Directors, Lauren Reisig, a 2012 Massapequa graduate and former Mock Trial Team member who is currently a sophomore at the university. The Massapequa’s Mock Trial Team won the county championship in her senior year. Massapequa was joined by East Islip as the only two Long Island teams at the seminar.

The seminar offers a range of basic and advanced classes that better position teams to win state and national competitions. Participants — seniors Rebecca Girardin, Jenna Petrungaro, Christie Flanders, Cameron Wunderlin, Justin Jakubowski and juniors Selin Solen, Jeremy Wiss, Griffin Konen, Emily O’Leary, Nicole Feeley, Nicolle Dananberg, Taylor DelValle, Jillian Prystupa and Katie McMahon — called the experience, “amazing.” Placed in advanced classes because of the extensive program offered at Massapequa, the students soaked up all they could on public speaking, body language, trial advocacy and the Federal Rules of Evidence. They received individual attention in breakout sessions to improve their own personal strengths and weaknesses, and received guidance in applying to colleges from

Massapequa High School American Sign Language (ASL) teacher Patricia McCarthy was awarded the first Marie Jean Phillip Memorial Award for ASL K-12 teachers. McCarthy said she was “overwhelmed and surprised” by the honor, which was presented to her, as well as her colleague in the field, Jason Zinza, at the annual National American Sign Language Teachers Association Conference. The pair won the award for their active involvement in expanding language and literary opportunities for the students outside the classroom. Together they began the ASL National Honor Society

in 2006, which is designed to recognize students’ skills and community service within the Deaf community. An educator for 18 years, McCarthy teaches ASL 1 and 4 and is the ASL and Chief CARE Club adviser. As the ASL adviser, she organizes numerous events for the Deaf community to attend along with ASL students. McCarthy said of her career she is most proud when her students use their ASL skills in the community, such as working to assist a deaf customer in finding a product or explaining medication a deaf person needs to take. “I am honored to be working in the ASL field

and the Deaf community,” McCarthy added. “I am fortunate to bring reallife experiences, as well as people, into the classroom to help students develop their signing skills and their minds with the knowledge that deaf people can do anything except hear.” McCarthy received a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from New York Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in special education with a concentration in rehabilitation counseling from Hofstra University. She is a member of the ASLTA and ASL National Honor Society.

MASSAPEQUA PRESERVE MEETING - The Friends of the Massapequa Preserve’s Annual Meeting was recently held at the Bar Harbour Building of the Massapequa Library. The Friends of the Massapequa Preserve is an organization that works to protect, preserve, maintain and enhance the appreciation of the 423 acres that make up the preserve, which is divided into three sections bounded by major roadways. The southern section, from Merrick Road to Sunrise Highway, contains the most diverse and ecologically valuable lands. Freshwater swamps, marsh, stream, lake and sandybog area provide habitat for many rare and endangered Long Island plants, including orchids, carnivorous sundews and bladderworts.

FROM OLD RECORDS TO NEW ART - These are “Green Art Project” mosaics created by Grace Day School 6th graders in Mrs Clauss’s after school art workshop. The focus of the project was to recycle old material to make new artistic creations. Mosaics were made from cut paper with specific shape and color selections appropriate to the style of the piece, and then mountedon old records. Their names were painted within a design on the back and the creations can be hung from the ceiling on display.
