516-799-5325 The acting talents of 90 students from Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District were on display before sell-out crowds as the Drama Club hosted performances of “Hairspray” on November 18th and 19th. The musical was about equality and the integration of television in the 1960s. Lead roles included Emmie McBride as Tracy, Danny Siani as Link, Joseph Casali as Corny Collins, Michael Augello as Edna, Vincent
Aranella as Seaweed and Annabelle Lesser as Penny. “They are incredible musicians, hard workers and amazing dancers,” said Director Katie Tauches, a music teacher at Berner, of her student-actors. “This was such as good cast.” Danielle Coutieri served as choreographer, Dennis McLoughlin directed the pit made up of music teachers from the district, and Travis McCabe led the tech crew, made up of middle and high school students who handled the lights and sounds.

Each companion is thoroughly screened through personal interviews and on-site observations. They receive in-service training on environmental safety, medical emergencies and infection control, and are frequently assessed during their employment to ensure that they are living up to TLC standards. TLC aides will offer non-medical help with daily tasks, from bathing and toileting to monitoring ambulation and maintenance of a safe environment. My Buddy Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior. Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. Through nearly two years of my life, from holiday gatherings to cozy weekends spent at home, just the two of us, Buddy was a constant. I’m not sure at what point I began to view him as so much more than a pet; but that he was. They say all animals have distinct personalities and characteristics, and Buddy was certainly no exception. Day after day, our routine became such that I swore he recognized me, greeted me, anxiously awaited my arrival home from work. Meal times were met with exuberant fin-waving and flitting to and fro, and the
occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl. Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention! It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have. Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week. He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns. In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print. Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy. Forever my little finned friend… Love, your Human

Stand Up to Bullying.” They saw a video on bullying in their classes and attended a PTAsponsored assembly by Hip Pickles that centered on positive character attributes. All students created an “I can stand up to bullying by…” activity sheet in which they drew a picture and wrote about ways to stop a bully. These projects were turned into a video collage, which was shared online with the school and the community at the end of the week. The children also signed a banner in which they pledged to take a stand against bullying, wore blue to show their solidarity and discussed the lessons of the week with their teachers. Third-grader Greg Parmiter said if someone is being bullied it is important to tell an adult. His classmate, Vivian West, added that when someone stands up to a bully they should use nice words to tell them to stop. “Anti-Bullying Week reinforces our commitment to educating and raising awareness of bullying prevention,” said Assistant Principal Bryan Piotrowski. “This year’s campaign, ‘You’re Not Alone,’ offers the perfect opportunity for our school and community to get together against bullying.”
Renée Susman, librarian at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, knows that people will be thinking about food as Thanksgiving approaches, but she also wants them thinking about books. Ms. Susman launched her Gobble Up a Good Book initiative, in which has students and staff make reading suggestions. To involve students in the process and foster
cooperation, collaboration and communication, she created a turkey on the bulletin board outside of the library. Each feather is a piece of paper shaped like an open book, and students wrote the names of books they were thankful to have read, along with the author’s name. In a nearby display case, teachers used the same book-shaped pieces of paper to post the titles of books that they think children
should read before they leave elementary school. The school’s youngest students constructed a thankful tree by writing what they are grateful for on hand-shaped leaves. “This is what East Lake is about; it’s a cooperative effort,” said Ms. Susman. “In this building, everyone gets on board and contributes to the learning environment.”

Leading the Way Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus has launched the first chapter of Active Minds, Inc. at a public high school in New York State. The organization is the nation’s only nonprofit organization dedicated to utilizing the student voice to raise mental health awareness. The goal of Active Minds is to promote a dialogue about mental health issues and educate students about available resources in and around the community. Although this organization is typically found on college campuses, two staff members at Ames heard about it and gained approval from Massapequa School District administrators, along with support from the Massapequa Takes Action Committee, to pilot
the student club on a high school level. Social worker Kim Hession and guidance counselor Courtney Mollura have generated great interest among the ninth-graders at Ames, as they felt strongly about creating a positive culture at school and in the community by reducing stigma and encouraging others to talk about mental health and wellness effectively. In the chapter’s first year, students organized a “Laugh More, Stress Less” Campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the stressors teens face and the impact stress has on health and wellness. In addition, students used the children’s book “Flower and Bubbles” by Allison C. Siegel to
create a powerful lesson on relaxation and coping with difficult emotions for kindergartners at the adjacent Lockhart Elementary School. Other events and activities included participating in Adelphi University’s “Voices Guiding Choices” substance abuse prevention summit, and a Mental Health Awareness Week in May. The ninth-grade students who started the Active Minds chapter have now moved on to the main campus and are continuing their work under the leadership of school social workers Joanne Waters and Diane Marascia. Current ninth-graders continue to keep the chapter running strong at Ames with a long list of activities and events already in progress.

Pinto and Town Clerk James Altadonna Jr. recently visited Lockhart Elementary School in Massapequa where Cub Scout Pack 590 of Massapequa, joined with the YES Community Center to collect Thanksgiving food baskets for Massapequa families in need. Councilman Pinto and Town Clerk Altadonna commended the members and leaders of the YES Community Center and Cub Scout Pack 590 for their kindness and compassion that will bring joy to families this Thanksgiving.
CULTURAL LESSON - Grace Early Childhood Center Pre-K students were treated to a presentation by Mrs. Foster from The Long Island Center for Arts and Sciences. They learned many things about the Native American culture. The children were able to participate in the Three Sisters Garden.
