Veterans from all eras and all branches of the United States military shared their personal stories with students during the annual Take a Veteran to School Day program at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District on Nov. 8. Eighth graders had an opportunity to visit the library during their social studies classes and sit down for personal talks with veterans. The guests discussed their experiences, shared photos and other memorabilia, and fielded questions from the inquisitive students. Social studies teacher Noreen Miller, who organized the event, noted that the curriculum is post-Civil War American history, so students study the conflict periods during which the veterans have served. Ms. Miller said that 32 men and women came in to speak with students

Helping a complete stranger in need. That is exactly what 28 year old David Pevsner of Massapequa Park has done. Five Years ago, in his Senior year at Geneseo, David attended a Relay for Life Event, which is a community based fundraising event for the American Cancer Society and many other cancer related associations. During this event David was approached by a donor Recruitment Coordinator for DKMS, an international non-profit organization and one of the largest bone marrow donor centers in the world. Minutes later, David found himself filling out a donor registry form which consisted of general
million potential donors on the registry to save an individual’s life. Little did he know that years later he would be doing just that. David had received a call this past September confirming that he was a potential match for a man with a life threatening blood disorder. Without knowing anything about his recipient, and with no hesitation, David agreed to move forward and have some additional blood tests and a medical examination to determine whether he was in fact healthy enough to proceed. David was given the green light. There are two methods used in donating, Peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) and bone marrow. The two procedures are simply different ways to achieve the same goal. David was asked to donate through the PBSC method which is used in

PBSC is a nonsurgical procedure that collects blood stem cells via the bloodstream, which is drawn through one arm then passed through a machine that filters out the blood stem cells. The remaining blood is then returned through the other arm. It is a common misconception that donating bone marrow or blood stem cells is dangerous or painful. There are rarely any side effects. In the days leading up to donation day David prepared by receiving injections of a drug called filgrastim for 5 consecutive days. Filgrastim is a bone marrow stimulant, which increases the number of blood forming cells in the bloodstream. During these days he had mentioned having mild achiness and headaches,
but these symptoms did not prevent him from his daily activities. By the 5th day David was now ready to get rid of those blood stem cells that his bone marrow had worked so hard to produce. The day of the donation David had checked himself into the hospital. He was told that the entire process would take 6-8 hours. He watched movies, ate some corned beef and eggs, took a few naps and was treated like the hero he is by all the hospital staff and donation coordinator. His recovery time was less than a week and aside from feeling slightly tired, David described his donation experience as surprisingly simple, easy and pain-free. I asked David how he felt knowing that he has saved another’s life, he paused for a moment, then said, “It didn’t take much
from me at all, but gave everything to someone in need. It’s a Powerful way to give!” Each year nearly 18,000 people in the U.S. ages 0-74 are in need of life saving bone marrow. Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the

Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self- sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.
So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island. There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even
permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters. So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Shop Small Businesses to Improve The Holiday Experience patronage with Small Business Saturday. This, too, is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The first event was created by American Express in conjunction with the nonprofit National Trust for Historic Preservation. Since its inception, many small business groups, merchants and politicians have touted the event and the Shop Small® mantra. The idea is that when small businesses thrive, communities and individuals thrive along with them. The Small Business Administration says that, since 1995, small businesses have generated 66 percent of all new jobs in the United States. There are a number of big reasons to shop small. One can start around the holidays and then continue all year long. • Shopping small businesses helps give back to the community directly. According to Civic Economics, a strategic planning business, on
average 48 percent of each purchase made at independent businesses is recirculated locally through tax money and other support. • Small business owners often strive to provide personalized, hands-on customer service. Repeat business is key to their survival, so they want to ensure shoppers are happy. • Small businesses, since they are not beholden to corporate oversight in terms of what they sell, have greater flexibility. That allows them to offer a diverse product selection. • Small business owners often live nearby, and they’re the people you see in town, schools and elsewhere in the local community. Many consumers are comforted to know they’re supporting their neighbors, especially during the holiday season. Supporting local businesses is easy, and shoppers who like what they see can share the good news with others on social media!

Plaid Friday was conceptualized in Oakland. It may have been born in the Golden State, but the movement soon spread across the country.
