Tis’ The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tis’ the season for outdoing ourselves – in every way… for feasting for what seems like days on end, for running up the credit cards on gifts for all our friends and loved ones – and occasionally ourselves – for “decking the halls” with extravagant garlands and twinkling lights and precious ornaments… There are many who detest this time of year, for precisely these reasons. But I love it.

Tis’ the season to be jolly, right? And why not … we spend enough of our days consumed by outside issues beyond our control. We deserve this brief reprieve from the madness, don’t we? No time like the present to savor the moment and enjoy all of life’s blessings. And, for me, this holiday season will be a year of firsts: First Christmas in my new apartment. Lockhart Elementary School, students were given a red ribbon by the PTA and participated in a different anti-drug-themed activity each day for a week, including wearing their clothing backwards for “Turn Your Back on Drugs” Day, wearing crazy socks for “Sock it to Drugs” Day and students wearing hats for “Put a Lid on Drugs” Day. Students also wore the color red and were asked to donate a can of non-perishable food for “I Can Be Drug Free” Day. Similar anti-drug activities took place at East Lake Elementary School where Assistant Principal Laura Lai also read the book, “The Red Ribbon: A Story of Hope” to affirm drug free choices to the firstgrade classes. Students at Unqua Elementary School received bracelets that said, “Say No to Drugs,” and made human red ribbons on the basketball court in addition to their daily themed activities. Students in each school took the pledge to lead healthy, drug-free lives while teachers facilitated classroom lessons appropriate for each grade level.

Post (Massapequa) and Syosset-Woodbury Community Park ice rinks, when the 2013-2014 season officially begins the day after Thanksgiving on Friday, November 29th. “The outdoor ice skating season will run through Sunday, March 2nd, 2014, weather permitting,”

CHIEFS CHAMPIONS - It was a historic day for the Chiefs as both the boys and girls varsity soccer teams capped the season with state championship titles. The win was the first state championship for the boys, who defeated Fairport, 1-0 at SUNY Cortland and the fifth for the girls, who beat North Rockland, 2-1 in Middletown, N.Y. The winning goal for the boys team was scored by sophomore Dylan Nealis, who just the day before scored the winning goal in the AA state semifinal. The perseverance of the girls team shined through as the winning goal, scored by Alyssa Iannuzzi, came with just seven minutes remaining in the game. The Town of Oyster Bay will host two Saturday night prime time high school ice hockey contests this season as part of its High School Hockey Night in Oyster Bay series held at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center on Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto. Starting off the series will be the Massapequa Chiefs taking on the Syosset Braves on Saturday, December 14th at 8 p.m. The second contest, featuring the Cold Spring Harbor Seahawks and the Bethpage Golden Eagles, is scheduled for Saturday, February 1st, at 8 p.m. “These events, which are free to all Town residents, feature high school teams that are among the finest in Nassau County,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The players really look forward to competing at the Town of Oyster Bay’s state of the art rink and we are always pleased to have them here.” Supervisor Venditto noted that Saturday night is a convenient time slot for people to attend the high school games. “Parents and friends of the players,

as well as high school ice hockey fans, don’t always get to see these outstanding games because of other commitments during the week,” the Supervisor said. “That’s in large part, why High School Hockey Night in Oyster Bay is so special.” Ice hockey on Long Island is continuing to grow in popularity, producing accomplished players who have gone on to compete at very high levels. As part of their history class, they are learning about the state of New York and a tour of Massapequa’s Old Grace Church was the perfect lesson. Members of The Massapequa Historical Society gave the students a tour of Old Grace Church, est. 1844, the Floyd-Jones Cemetery, est. 1892, and the red house, called the Servant’s Cottage, est. 1870. Students got a firsthand feeling of daily living at the turn of the century. From ice boxes and infant high-chairs to Massapequa Indian arrowheads, the fourth grade thoroughly enjoyed learning this history lesson.
