Horse Farm Field Trip

rs. O’Hara’s Pre-K class from Grace Day School in Massapequa participated in a field trip to the Thomas’ School of Horsemanship, located in Melville. There, the staff educated the children on the importance of horseshoes, the difference between straw and hay and instructed them on proper grooming techniques. The students thoroughly enjoyed their horse farm adventure. A great time was had by all.

Big data is out there, but the way that school districts access it is changing. The Nassau BOCES Instructional Data Warehouse (IDW) team has improved navigation, designed dashboards and created new reports. One of the new features for school districts is that they can use a variety of browsers, such as Explorer, Google and Firefox, to access data. The Premier of Massapequa Restaurant Week (MRW) kicks off on December 7th, offering seven days of local dinner specials at area restaurants. During MRW, which runs from December 7th through 13th, participating restaurants will be offering prix fix menu specials for $25, appetizerentrée-dessert, and other specials or coupons throughout the week.

Weekly restaurant gift certificate giveaways will be rafﬂed off through social media for each premiere restaurant participating. This is the first restaurant week to highlight both Massapequa and Massapequa Park eateries. It was initiated by Jennifer Navadomski & Tina Villalobos, two moms that live in the community. Their desire was to help give the

community, especially the parents they interact with, an affordable night out while also publicizing the wonderful restaurants right in the community. Whether patrons enjoy one night out or all seven, the hope is that it will inspire them to support local restaurants. Holy Trinity High School is preparing for its 2nd Annual Career Forum on December 6th, offering career and networking advice to current students and alumni. The inaugural event last year drew over 300 attendees and this year many more are expected. Holy Trinity graduates have been extremely successful in a variety of industries and many of them will be returning to help give back to their high school to help advise their fellow “Titans” in their posthigh school careers. The evening will begin with a panel of seven graduates, moderated by Tom Ward, Jr., Execute Director of Career Services at Adelphi University. The panel will consist of Samantha Augeri (’01), News 12 OnAir Meteorologist; Mark Durcan (’99), Director of IT Engineering at Gilt Groupe; John Harvey (’74), National Law Enforcement Liaison with MSA Security; Aracelis Jones, CPA (’06), Senior Auditor at Deloitte & Touche LLP; Neil Laurine (’91), Vice President-Real Estate at The Corcoran

Group; Christina Lynch Markham (’00), Dancer with The Paul Taylor Dance Company; Maureen Paradine (’86), Sr. Vice President of Human Resources at 1-800 Flowers; Leigh Poggio (’84), Managing Director at Guggenheim Partners and Emil Rensing (’92), Co-Founder & Chief Digital Officer at EPIX. The evening will also include the chance to network with many other alumni representing other industries such as: Law Enforcement, Accounting/Finance, Performing Arts, Medicine/Dentistry and Graphic Arts. Bradstock Raises Funds On November 10th, Brendan McCurdy and Bob Draffin, Directors, Friends of Bradstock, presented a check in the amount of $12,000 to Kevin Spellman, Board President, Camp Pa-QuaTuck, at the camp’s board meeting. With this check, Bradstock has raised a total of over $42,000 for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in the past four years. The money was raised for Camp PaQua-Tuck from a portion of the ticket sales from Bradstock XXI, which took place on August 30th and August 31st. Bradstock is a two-day music festival featuring musical acts performing the best of Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jams, funk, rock and jazz music. The event also featured poetry reading, a 5K trail run, and overnight camping. The music festival has a special connection to the camp as the late Kevin “K.C.” Cowan — who

performed at every single Bradstock event with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, before his passing in October 2011 — was the brother-in-law of Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Still In The Game News 12 Long Island recently announced that awardwinning sportscaster Bob Wolff has been recognized by Guinness World Records for having the “longest career as a sportscaster and broadcaster.” Currently enjoying his 75th year in broadcasting, with more than 68 of those in television, Wolff is still going strong. Guinness World Records presented Wolff with the 75 year certificate at the New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden this past Wednesday. Patrick Dolan, President, News 12 Networks and News 12 Long Island News Director, noted: “For more than 28 years, we’ve been thrilled and honored to count Bob Wolff as a member of the News 12 family. Bob is more than a sportscaster - he’s a broadcast legend. His genius and relentless work ethic have been an inspiration for scores of young sport professionals at News 12 and elsewhere. We couldn’t be happier to be a part of his legacy.” “This has been a wonderful journey and I’m still enjoying every moment”, said Bob Wolff. “I’ve been privileged to work with some of the best professionals in the business and for that I am truly grateful. I feel enormously lucky that I have been a professional sports broadcaster in nine decades, beginning on CBS in 1939, providing play-by-play of some of the most memorable games in sports history. To be honored at Madison Square Garden, where I’ve called so many memorable events, and made so many friends, is something I’ll always cherish, and I look forward to continuing to cover sports well into the future.” Wolff began his professional career in 1939 working for WDNC-CBS while a freshman at Duke University in Durham, NC. The Phi Beta Kappa graduate became a sports television pioneer in 1946 when he joined DuMont Network’s WTTG-TV as the first telecaster in Washington, D.C. He was also the first basketball team telecaster in history, calling play-byplay for the Red Auerbach-coached Washington Capitols in their inaugural 1946-1947 season. During his 15 years in Washington, D.C., Wolff became a local broadcasting

legend. He was the television voice of the Washington Senators beginning in 1947 and, in addition to calling games, he also handled the team’s pre-game and post-game TV and radio shows. Beginning in 1954, he began a remarkable 36-year television run as MSG play-by-play broadcaster where he held the record for telecasting more MSG events than any other sportscaster, including long-running tenures as the TV voice of the New York Knicks, the Rangers, numerous college basketball teams, the National Invitation Tournament, the Millrose Games, Virginia Slims Tennis, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and the National Horse Show. He’s also been the national play-by-play voice for NBC, ABC and the Mutual Broadcasting System’s “Game of the Week” in baseball and college football, and the local television play caller for eight pro teams in five sports. On

the college scene, he was a popular play caller for Maryland, Navy and St. John’s. Wolff has been behind the microphone for many sporting firsts. In 1956, he was selected to cover Mutual Broadcasting System’s broadcast of the 1956 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers. He had a sportscasting first in Game 5 when he called Don Larsen’s perfect game – the only one in World Series history. He

also called the Baltimore Colts 1958 victory over the New York Giants at Yankee Stadium in the first overtime NFL Championship that has been called “the greatest game ever played.” And in 1960, Wolff teamed with Canadian TV hockey great Foster Hewitt to call television’s first-ever pay-perview game, Toronto against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. In 1961, Wolff followed the Senators to Minnesota to become the play-by-play voice of the Minnesota Twins and in 1962, he was selected to be the play-by-play telecaster on NBC’s Baseball Game of the Week. Wolff joined News 12 Long Island when it launched in 1986 and continues to serve as an active sportscaster with the network. Throughout his long and distinguished career, he has received numerous accolades. For starters, Wolff holds the rare distinction of having broadcast the play-by-play championships in all four major professional sports – the World Series, the Stanley Cup Finals, the NBA Championship and the National Football League Championship. In 2003, he became the first person to capture the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association’s (NSSA) Triple Crown of awards. Wolff was inducted into the NSSA Hall of Fame and was also selected as New York State Sportscaster of the Year for the sixth time and received the national Powerade Award for Best Sportscast for the “Bob Wolff Baseball Scrapbook” show on the MSG Network. That same year, he was also inducted into the Madison Square Garden Walk of Fame. In 1995, he was honored with baseball’s prestigious Ford C. Frick Award for major contributions to baseball and was inducted into the broadcast wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In July 2008, he was voted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame with the Curt Gowdy Award, joining Curt as the only two sportscasters to be in both the basketball and the baseball halls. Wolff has also been honored by selection to the Hall of Fame of his collegiate fraternity- Sigma Nu. A New York native, Wolff resides in Rockland County, NY, with his wife Jane. They have two sons and a daughter. The “Wolffpack” now includes nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Back In Black Black Friday is nearly upon us once again. Can it really be one whole year since we all ventured into the void that is the morning after Thanksgiving to join the throngs searching for that special, magical bargain? Imagine trying to learn to speak if you couldn’t hear music or if you had never known the sound of the voices of your family. Birth to three years of age is the most important time for language development. Today, hearing-impaired students, through sophisticated technology such as cochlear implants, sound fields and advanced hearing aids, are assisted in learning by educators from the Nassau BOCES Hearing Services Infant Program. Family education and support are crucial components in the Infant Program. The entire family is encouraged to participate in the child’s program. The Baby and You program targets children from birth to two years. From the beginning, parents are given training on what the needs are for the child. Parents and children come to Nassau BOCES twice a week to work with teachers and speech therapists. Noise and distance make it more difficult for anyone to hear. For the students who wear hearing aids or cochlear implants, the teacher wears an added FM system so the students can always hear as if someone is speaking into their ear. “Music is also an integral part of the baby’s learning as the repetition, what to expect and movements are precursors to literacy,” explained Nassau BOCES Speech Therapist Judy Bauer. “Parents are given the music and movements so they can work with their children at home.” The toddler group works
