Dr. Cynthia Paulis proud veteran announces the annual 500 for 500 patriotic scholarship program for all seniors at Massapequa High School. The theme this year is Why Veterans are important to this country. In 500 words or less students will write an essay and submit it to Mr. Paul Weber in the guidance office. Make sure your contact information is available. All entries must be received by December 30, 2020. Two students will be selected from the winning essays,
one girl and one boy and will each receive $500 from Dr. Paulis and the essays will be read at a site to be determined later. Dr. Paulis a Massapequa High School graduate served 4 years as a Lt. commander in the United States Public Health Service and was a military physician and will be judging the essays. “It’s important for us to remember to sacrifices our military has made to serve and protect our great nation which has given us the freedoms we enjoy today.”

Photo courtesy of the Massapequa School District Individually, Massapequa High School seniors Jack Devenish and Devin DiMascio were called to Principal Barbara Lowell’s office in late September. They both left with huge smiles, as they were told they are the top two graduates of the Class of 2021. “I had no idea right until the moment they told me,” said Jack, the valedictorian. “I’ve never been that surprised and shocked. It was pretty great.” Devin said she always has been getting good grades but didn’t realize they were good enough to become salutatorian. Now, she hopes this honor earns her admission into a prestigious college. She plans to study medicine to become a neurologist and is looking at more than a half-dozen colleges in the northeast. Jack wants to study aerospace engineering with aspirations to do automotive design and currently has a list of about 10 schools he is exploring. His top choices area George Tech and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Once acceptances start coming in, he plans to do campus visits to see which school suits him best. The two students have challenged themselves with numerous Advanced
Placement and collegelevel courses. Jack particularly enjoyed AP Research in which he did a project on the relation of ethic to autonomous vehicles. Devin has taken multiple science classes at Massapequa High School. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of them,” she said. “Most of my schedule has been science the last few years.” While Jack and Devin have devoted countless hours to their academics, they have also explored other interests to round out their educations. Jack is a member of the Car Care Club, French Club, varsity tennis team, and National and Tri-M Music honor societies. He has served as class president since sophomore year. His musical abilities playing the viola have led to selections to Long Island String Festival Association and Nassau County Music Association All-County ensembles. Outside of school, he is a member of the Long Island-based Gemini Youth Orchestra. Devin is president of the Forensic Science Club and a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions and Health Care Explorers, the latter of which has allowed her to visit local hospitals to learn about various careers in the medical field. As a member of the science research
program, she studied super conductivity. She is also passionate about animal rights and has volunteered for the ASPCA’s regional advocacy field team. Jack and Devin both embody perseverance. Hurricane Sandy hit when Jack was in elementary school and his family lived in a trailer on the property for two years while their house was torn down and rebuilt. He said the adjustment was easier as a child than it likely would have been if he were older. Devin has a mild heart condition that sometimes makes her physically exhausted but that has only strengthened her desire to work hard and do well in school. Since beginning their educations – Jack on Massapequa’s south side at Birch Lane Elementary School and Devin up north at Lockhart Elementary School – they have both found their paths to success. Jack never lets “the size of a challenge scare me” and Devin has a competitiveness that has driven her to do her best. “We are so proud of how hard Jack and Devin have worked to achieve these high distinctions within their class,” Ms. Lowell said. “They have earned so many accolades and they serve as roles models at Massapequa High School.”

The 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation came together in 2012 to help form a day that was focused on the generosity of giving during the holiday season. Thus, Giving Tuesday was born. Technology and social media play a large role in uniting people for Giving Tuesday. Founding partners included Mashable, a technology website, Skype and Cisco, but the success of Giving Tuesday is thanks in large part to the general public, who have both spread the word and made their own contributions to charity. In 2017, Giving
Tuesday soared to new heights when technology mogul Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, announced their foundation would match up to $2 million in donations to Giving Tuesday fundraisers started on Facebook. Facebook similarly waived its 5 percent fee for U.S.-based nonprofits all day long. The global Giving Tuesday movement helped raise more than $300 million online across more than 150 countries in 2017 alone. This year, the Giving Tuesday organization is poised to top their numbers and continue to improve upon the more than 46,000 participating organizations involved in their charitable efforts. While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are some of the more widely known retail holidays, Giving Tuesday is becoming pretty popular in its own right. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday helps raise awareness that charity is an important component of the holiday season. The nonprofit services company Neon says nearly one-third of all annual giving occurs in December, with 12 percent happening over the final three days of the year. Giving Tuesday is positioned right in the midst of the most popular time for charitable giving. Walsh Seeks Volunteers to Help Senior Annual Tree and Menorah Lighting Citizens Register for Smart911 CANCELLED

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh recently announced a new volunteer program that helps protect the lives of senior citizens. The Town of Oyster Bay is calling on students to volunteer in helping senior citizens register for Smart911, a free public safety service offered by the Nassau County Police Department that allows residents to provide 911 emergency call takers and emergency responders with one’s health condition, prescription medicines and other important medical information. Councilwoman Walsh stated “With many senior citizens not utilizing a computer, this volunteer initiative allows students help their aging neighbors register lifesaving information with the Nassau County Police Department and ensure the highest level of emergency response during a critical time. The information we submit
to Smart911 enables first responders to make better decisions more quickly when taking your call and arriving at your home during an emergency.” Smart911 allows all residents to create a free safety profile for their household at www. smart911.com that includes information necessary for 911 call takers to have in the event of an emergency. Details can include names and photos of all family members, medical conditions, allergies, pets, and emergency contacts. The Safety Profile created by residents will immediately display to 911 call takers when receiving an emergency call, and also provides a way for residents to include information that will enhance disaster response such as power needs for medical equipment, evacuation assistance and sheltering needs. In the event of a natural disaster, public
safety officials will be able to quickly determine which residents need assistance. “Smart911 streamlines the time necessary to collect critical information and allows faster assignment and dispatch of responders to call locations with more information to assist the residents quickly,” added Councilwoman Walsh. Smart911 also provides the capability to conduct Mass Emergency Alerting callouts, allowing residents to opt-in to receive emergency alerts from public safety officials based on geographic locations of events. These mass notifications can be sent through various means of communications including phone, text or e-mail. Winter Youth Hockey Program & House League
Councilman Tom Hand recently announced that registration for the Town’s 2020-21 Winter Youth Ice Hockey Program and House League has begun at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. “The Town of Oyster Bay’s Youth Ice Hockey Program is one of the best games in town, and features many respected coaches dedicated to teaching this outstanding sport to the many boys and girls enrolled in the program,” said Councilman Hand. “As a hockey enthusiast
myself, I am proud to announce that the children who attend the program get the unique opportunity to hone their skating and hockey skills as part of a program that has earned recognition by the National Hockey League for its high level of quality.” Boys and girls, ages 6 – 16, interested in registering for the Winter Youth Ice Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (tax or utility bill) as well as payment. ARNOLD “TONY” PRISCO 1934 - 2020
With the passing of Arnold “Tony” Prisco Sr. on October 28, 2020, Copiague has suffered the loss of an illustrious resident. A businessman, entrepreneur, and strong advocate for the Copiague community, his sudden passing has impacted so many family and friends. Born on December 22, 1934, to Anthony and Nicolena Prisco, he lived his entire life in Copiague in a very traditional Italian household. His father built the first bowling alley and Italian restaurant on Long Island. Tony’s Pizza, became Arnie’s first job, as the boy placing the pins on the alleys. Always working, his father expected his wife, Nicolena, to prepare a nightly home-cooked for him. Thus, Arnie would walk the mile from his home to the bowling alley every night to bring his father dinner. When reminiscing, Arnie would trace his work ethic directly to his own upbringing.

Office manager, Donna Farina, looked forward to sharing the news of the day and “could count on his call like clockwork.” He had a true insight and a sense of people which is why his daughterin-law, Lori, clearly valued his expertise. “I could call Dad anytime and he would often advise and help me navigate the intricacies of the business and my own life. He became my second father.”
Arnie was the original “Greaser” and in the summer of 1950 when his future wife, Lorraine, saw him in his white convertible on the East Venice Bridge, she knew he was the one for her. They were married in 1956 when he was 22 and she was 19 and began their life together in a bungalow on East Minerva in Lindenhurst. A son, Anthony, and daughter Debbie, soon completed the family. Arnie’s career was not a straight path. He worked for Typhoon Fence learning the art of being a salesman. Arnie was the owner of the Cleaners on Oak Street. There he learned the essential skills required to manage a business. After purchasing the iconic Prisco Building from his father, he harnessed all these valuable insights, and launched Blizzard Fence in 1960. Thus, would begin a forty-year career that he developed and cherished. Arnie was the quintessential business owner, debonair and suave; he toiled around town in his Cadillac with his famous Fence 1 license plate! He nurtured his commitment to Copiague by becoming a member and donating to causes through community service organizations such as The Kiwanis Club of Copiague, and the Copiague Chamber of Commerce. He was truly passionate about investing in the progress of Copiague’s business community. This is best illustrated when he was once on vacation in Puerto Rico with close friends. He heard that Great Neck Road had
Always interested in the daily lives of his children and grandchildren he continually reached out to them wanting to know how their days were and what they were doing. His daughter, Debbie, so articulately encapsulated her father calling him, “A great American. The American flag he would say, was ‘My flag.’ He was a true man of character.” Arnold “Tony” Prisco was a pillar of the community. He will truly be missed; the august family patriarch, his chair in the Blizzard Office will always remain his.
His interest in serving the community led him to be considered for Babylon Town Council Seat. Although, not successful in pursuing this career path, he became a force in community politics and was instrumental in promoting Madeleine Fitzgibbon to prominence and having her name considered for judgeship which she attained in 1994. Judge Fitzgibbon fondly reminisced, “That experience working with Tony is when we went from a working friendship to a family relationship.” She recalled that Arnie’s mindset was such

You’re doing a good job.” Arnie’s ties to Blizzard Fence were long-lasting and Arnie was humbled as he accepted the Rich Schaffer’s Outstanding Business
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, his son, Anthony, daughter-in-law, Lori, daughter, Debbie, son-in-law, Charlie, eight grandchildren, eleven greatgrandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. He will be waked at Johnston’s Funeral Home in Lindenhurst. A funeral Mass will be at Our Lady of The Assumption in Copiague. He will lie in rest at St. Charles Cemetery. He was an advocate for healthy living and went to the gym until he was in his early 80’s. He had a wide range of friends that included founding members of the community, politicians, and most importantly, encouraged new businesses and new voices. Jen Madden, shared that her husband, Chris Madden, and she would often stop into Blizzard Fence to visit with Arnie because he would inspire them to pursue actions that would benefit Copiague. He loved nothing more than to sit down, have a cup of coffee and share narratives about the past and Copiague’s history.

New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations, but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation
of the way people donate blood has changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a blood emergency would create a short-term increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage long-term. New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations Amid Pandemic Area hospitals and academic medical centers including NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, NewYorkPresbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, Montefiore Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island are joining forces with New York Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty surrounding
