Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto announces that a special New York Islanders ‘Learn to Play’ Hockey Clinic is returning to the Town of Oyster for children ages 5 – 9. Massapequa Thanks Legislator For Berner Fence Grant The Massapequa School District continues to take measures to secure its buildings, and a new safety enhancement is under way at Berner Middle School. A six-foot perimeter fence is

being constructed in front of the school, along Carman Mill Road. Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy, who represents Massapequa, secured a grant to pay

for a significant part of the project. On Oct. 24, Legislator Kennedy was joined by board of education trustees, administrators and Town of Oyster Bay officials at the site, where brick

pillars have already been constructed. The project is expected to be completed by mid-November. “Once complete, this exterior fence will provide an added layer of protection

and reinforce our security measures and controlling points of entry for our school grounds,” Superintendent Dr. William Brennan said. “We are very grateful to Legislator Kennedy for

his support. This project represents our ongoing commitment to creating a safe and conducive learning environment for all students and staff.”

In Massapequa, Flowers At Fairﬁeld Give Global Insight Fourth graders explored a holiday celebrated in Mexico and other Spanishspeaking countries as part of their FLES instruction at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students learned about Dia de los Muertos – Day of the Dead – and made a craft associated with the holiday that allows people to honor departed family members. Teacher Julianne Loney introduced Day of the Dead, which is typically

celebrated in late October and early November. She talked about its history and purpose, and explained that flowers are an important element of the holiday, specifically the marigold. Under Ms. Loney’s guidance, students made marigolds out of orange tissue paper and pipe cleaners. They learned the symbolism of the goldencolored flower, which people often scatter or use to make arches to lead the souls of the deceased to

the altars prepared in their honor. As part of Massapequa’s Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program, students in grades 3-5 get Spanish instruction twice a week, preparing them for middle school where they can select a language to study. Ms. Loney noted that the Day of the Dead lesson and craft for fourth graders was part of a Hispanic cultural studies unit.

Registration Open For Advanced Adult Learn-To-Play Ice Hockey Clinic Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announced that registration for the Town’s Adult Learn to Play Ice Hockey Clinics is now open online with clinic sessions beginning on December 5th at the outdoor skating rink at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. com/portal. “This great program allows adults to hone their ice hockey skills in a fun and competitive environment through this 10-session clinic held Tuesday nights at Marjorie Post Park, beginning Tuesday, December 5th,” said Councilman Hand. “The program is open to resident and nonresident adults looking

to advance their hockey playing skills.” Registration is now open on the Town’s website at www. oysterbaytown.com/ portal. The cost of the program is $150 per player. The National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) urges added caution when cooking on Thanksgiving Day, by far the leading day of the year for home cooking fires. In 2021, an estimated 1,160 home cooking fires were reported to U.S fire departments on Thanksgiving Day, reflecting a 297 percent increase over the daily average. “Thanksgiving is a hectic holiday with multiple dishes cooking and baking at the same time, along with lots of guests, entertaining, and other distractions that can make it easy to lose sight of what’s on the stove or in the oven,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA. “With all these factors at play, it’s not surprising that the number of cooking fires spikes so dramatically.” Overall, cooking is the leading cause of U.S. home fires and injuries, and the second-leading cause of home fire deaths. Unattended cooking is the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths. “Keeping a close eye on what’s cooking and minimizing the likelihood of getting distracted are key steps people can take to ensure a festive, fire-free holiday,” said Carli. Following are additional tips and recommendations from NFPA to help cook safely on Thanksgiving: Never leave the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop. Some types of cooking, especially those that involve frying or sautéing with oil, need continuous attention.

When cooking a turkey, remain at home and check it regularly. Make use of timers to keep track of cooking times, particularly for foods that require longer cook times. Keep things that can catch fire like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels at least three feet away from the cooking area. Avoid long sleeves and hanging fabrics that can come in contact with a heat source. Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If a small grease fire starts, smother the flames by sliding the lid over the pan, then turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. Only open the door once you’re confident the fire is completely out, standing to the side as you do. If you have any doubts or concerns, contact the fire department for assistance. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. Hot foods and liquids should be placed away from table and counter edges. In addition, NFPA strongly discourages the use of turkey fryers that use cooking oil, which can cause devastating burns. For a safe alternative, NFPA recommends purchasing a fried turkey from a grocery store or restaurant or buying a fryer that does not use oil.
