Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island.
There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.
In honor of Veterans Day, which recently passed, below is a heartfelt story of how Long Island Cares helped a female veteran. Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits. So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Blue skies and sunshine served as the backdrop for Massapequa High School’s annual homecoming parade and football game on Oct. 19. Proudly dressed in navy blue and gold, community members lined the sidewalks of Park Boulevard to watch as the high school marching band, cheerleaders, Chiefettes kickline team, homecoming court, class representatives and more march to the high school to watch the Massapequa Chiefs take on the Westbury Green Dragons. Former Board of Education President Timothy Taylor served as grand marshal and led the parade. Prior to the game, cheerleaders, Chiefettes and football players from
the Class of 2020 presented flowers to their parents during a special ceremony. Community members filled the bleachers and bought snacks, baked goods and Massapequa merchandise from different school organizations. The crowd roared as the Chiefs ran onto the field. Senior vocal soloist Sarah Benedict performed the National Anthem which was signed by students from Massapequa High School’s American Sign Language program. The marching band, color guard, cheerleaders and Chiefettes showcased their school spirit throughout the game as students and community members cheered on the Chiefs. During halftime, the
marching band took spectators back in time as they performed iconic rock tunes from the 1980s. The Chiefettes showcased their perfect choreography and the cheerleaders entertained the crowd with their impressive routine. In addition, Massapequa High School Principal Brian Conboy and Ames Campus Principal Tania Willman presented the 2019 homecoming princes, princesses, king and queen. Seniors Anthony Papasodero and Juliet Hartz were crowned king and queen, respectively. The crowd cheered as the Chiefs capped off homecoming with a victory over the Westbury Green Dragons, 36-0.

Ninth graders donated non-perishable items including canned vegetables, coffee, cookies, gravy and juice, and also could make contributions toward gift cards for turkeys. The donations, enough to fill six baskets, were delivered to the food pantry at St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa. Thanksgiving Cooking Safety Tips
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town’s Department of Public Safety today issued important cooking safety tips to residents ahead of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, as the rise in popularity of deepfrying a turkey also presents a potential increase in serious injury and fires. “Thanksgiving is a time for family and taste-tested delicious Thanksgiving recipes. In recent years, deep frying a turkey has become a go-to Thanksgiving tradition for some, due to the speed of deep-frying, the irresistible flavor, and the juiciness of the mean that results from this process,” Supervisor Saladino said. “While accidents caused by deep-fryers are not common, when they do occur, they are harmful, can start a fire, and potentially can prove costly.” To ensure safety over the Thanksgiving holiday, HARD WORK PAYS OFF - Twenty-six athletes from Massapequa High School Supervisor Saladino and the have signed their national letters of intent to play at the collegiate level and were celebrated for their accomplishments on Nov. 13. *Keep outdoor fryers off decks, out of garages and a safe distance away from trees and other structures. *Make sure the turkey is thawed and dry before cooking. Ice or water that mixes into the hot oil can cause flare-ups. *Watch the weather. Never operate a fryer outdoors in the rain or snow. *Place the fryer on a level surface, and avoid moving it once it’s in use. *Leave at least 2 feet between the tank and the burner when using a propanepowered fryer. *Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid overfilling. Oil can ignite when it makes contact with the burner. *Choose a smaller turkey for frying. A bird that’s 8 to 10 pounds is best; pass on turkeys over 12 pounds. *Never leave fryers unattended. *Purchase a fryer with temperature controls, and watch the oil temperature
carefully. Cooking oil that is heated beyond its smoke point can catch fire. If you notice the oil is smoking, turn the fryer off. *Turn off the burner before lowering the turkey into the oil. Once the turkey is submerged, turn the burner on. *Wear goggles to shield your eyes, use oven mitts to protect your hands and arms and keep an “ABC” or greaserated fire extinguisher close by. Do not to use water or a garden hose on a fire related to turkey fryers. *Skip the stuffing when frying turkey, and avoid waterbased marinades. *Keep children and pets away from the fryer at all times. *Once finished, carefully remove the pot from the burner, place it on a level surface and cover to let the oil cool overnight before disposing. *Opt for an oil-less fryer. This uses infrared heat, rather than oil, to cook the turkey.
