t. Rose of Lima’s Brownie Troop 2246 spent their afternoon working hard packing items they collected as part of Operation Christmas Child. Each girl was given a box to fill with items such as toys, small games, candy and everyday necessities such as toothbrushes, soap and socks. The girls enjoyed decorating and writing letters to enclose in the shoeboxes which will be given to children during the holidays.

They covered basic training and boot camp, where they were stationed, the skills they learned and what it was like being overseas. Vietnam veteran Don Hardina, an army medic from 1966-68, said it was “hot, wet and tough. It was the ultimate camping trip.” U.S. Air Force veteran Chris Zeller, who served from 1980-86, never saw combat but praised the training he received in the military. Stationed in Bellevue, Nebraska, he learned computers, something he didn’t know anything about when he enlisted, and today he is a director of IT for a Long Island company. Spotlighting military service as a family tradition, U.S. Army veteran Jack Solomons came with a formal portrait of his grandson, Zachary, a Massapequa graduate and U. S. Marine currently stationed in Afghanistan. With a fist full of handouts bearing his grandson’s address, he asked students

On October 24th, the winners of Canstruction® Long Island 2013’s annual design competition were announced at its awards reception held at RXR Plaza in Uniondale. Nine teams of architects, engineers, designers, contractors, vendors, students and community groups built colossal structures made entirely of cans of food, which are donated to Long Island Cares, the Harry Chapin Food Bank. This year’s event collected over 32,000 cans. The winning structures for 2013 are: Juror’s Favorite and Best Use of Labels “Without Change, There Would be no Butterflies” Lines & Designs and Social Harmony Structural Ingenuity and Most Cans (6,048 cans) “Send Hunger Out of this World” H2M Architects and Engineers Best Meal “Hunger is no Game” Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. Coschignano to announce the annual kick-off of this year’s “Toys for Tots” Collection Drive, which will run through December 15th, in an effort to collect new, unwrapped toys to be used as gifts for children in the community. “Run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, the program’s mission is to help ensure that children in need in our area do not have to go without during this holiday season,” Councilman Coschignano said. “By helping those in need experience the joy of the holiday season, contributors will play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources for the future, our children. Without collection drives like this one organized by the Town, many of the less fortunate in the Town of Oyster Bay would be forced to go without,” Councilman Macagnone said. What to write… It’s funny, as you go through daily life, there are so many topics that seem worthy of a column; yet, when I actually sit down to write my weekly contribution to this newspaper, I am often at a loss for words. I recently received a letter from a supportive reader saying, in part, that he was writing “to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” True enough. I must admit, when I first became interested in the field of Journalism, it was mainly due to the fact that I saw it as a wonderful cross-section of all those topics which interested me – English, History, perhaps some Political Science, Photography… really, the possibilities were endless. As elementary writing assignments

turned to full-fledged papers in middle school, followed by “true” journalistic work on my high school newspaper, I was sold on the career choice. This passion for the field only increased throughout college, as I was afforded the opportunity to explore various genres ranging from hard-hitting investigative pieces to in-depth features and profiles to the more subjective movie/music review.
