Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announced that the Town’s massive ‘Cruise-Thru’ Toys for Tots Collection Drive will take place at John Burns Park in Massapequa on Saturday, December 4th from 9am to 2pm (rain date is Sunday, December 5th). In partnership with the United States Marine Corps, the Town is collecting toys to help families impacted by the COVID-19 economic crisis and those less fortunate throughout the community during the upcoming holiday season. In addition to the ‘CruiseThru’, collection boxes are located at Town facilities through December 14th. Supervisor Saladino said, “The Toys for Tots Drive has long been a huge success under the leadership of the U.S. Marine Corps, especially here in the Town of Oyster Bay, as just last year

Project 9 Line is a nonprofit organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue, an Army combat veteran. Their focus is to bridge T the communication JEC gap between PRO veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art. Studies show that Long Island has the second largest population of Veterans in the United States, second only to San Diego, California; Suffolk County has approximately 85,000 veterans and Nassau County has approximately 75,000 veterans. Also, statistics show that twenty two veterans decide to take their own life every day. Many of our veterans return home from performing the ultimate duty of serving our country only to face hardship, depression and substance abuse. Through their extensive resources and hands on team, Project 9 Line wants to maximize the potential of each and every veteran. This non-profit offers veterans various weekly classes. Whether a veteran wants to sign up for one to heal, learn or just to be a part of something locally, there is a spot for them! The Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit the Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 19, 2021, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The 13th annual food drive will include a no-contact donation car drive-through which will enable community residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from the vehicles. Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass containers). The Bethpage Turkey Drive will take place at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage.
For those unable to make a donation on November 19th, or would rather show their support online, Bethpage is accepting online monetary donations at http:// www.lovebethpage.com/ turkeydrive, beginning in November, through Friday, December 31st. Donations can also be made at any Bethpage branch. “2020 was a recordbreaking year for the turkey drive,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “We hope Long Islanders continue to show their support again this year as the need on Long Island is still great. We’ve also taken all necessary safety precautions with the contactless drive-through donation drop-off so everyone should feel very safe.” “Thanks to Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s annual turkey drive and the generosity of countless Long Islanders, we’re able to provide a traditional holiday-style meal, complete with a turkey and all the trimmings, to thousands of local families who are struggling to make ends meet,” said Randi
Shubin Dresner, president & CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. “Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s support extends beyond the holidays. They are a longtime and year-round partner in our mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, and we are grateful for their caring and support.” Patches will be given to all Girl Scouts who make a donation. Troop leaders can make a donation on behalf of troop members, and bring back patches for the entire troop. Since the first Bethpage Turkey Drive was organized in 2009, hundreds of community volunteers have come out to assist in the collection of more than 40,000 turkeys and over 168,000 pounds of food, which were then given to Long Island families facing hardship in time for the holidays. Island Harvest Food Bank has seen an increase in the requests for food and support services among the 400 community-based agencies it serves. About 70,000 individuals receive food assistance from the Island Harvest Food Bank network each week.

Chairman Sal Polito promises a great time for all attendees. We will start at 12:00 Noon like always. Thanks to Patty Orzano and her committee for all of their hard work on the Food Drive. Toys for Tots will also kick off as we look forward to a great Christmas season for all. We will also have the Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony on Broadway at Klestinec Park (by James Funeral Home) on Saturday, December 4th at 6:00 PM. Please bring all of your family members and kids to attend and enjoy the music, entertainment from local dance studios, and a visit from Santa as we light up the community for the holidays. Amy Recco and her committee are doing a great job, and we look forward to a fun evening.

November is National Adoption Awareness Month

Originating in 1976 when then Massachusetts Governor, Michael Dukakis, declared the first week of November Adoption Week in the state, it was then formally recognized in 1984 when President Gerald Ford signed a proclamation declaring it National Adoption Week. To further increase adoption awareness, in 1995 President Bill Clinton expanded the week to the full month of November, and beginning in 2000, the Saturday before Thanksgiving was declared National Adoption Day. Today, it’s estimated that seven million Americans are adoptees and that one hundred million have direct experience with adoption in their immediate family either having adopted or placed a child for adoption or being an adoptee themselves. While the purpose of National Adoption Month and National Adoption Day is to draw attention to the importance of all adoption-related issues, 2021’s focus is on the critical issues surrounding the adoption of children in foster care. Numbers vary by source, but it’s generally agreed that there are over 400,000 children currently in foster care in the United States (as of 2019, 16,000 of them were in New York
State). The average age of those children is eight years and there are slightly more boys in foster care than girls. While approximately half of them will ultimately be returned to one or both of their parents or to a caregiver, another twentyfive percent find adoptive homes, typically with their foster parents. At any given point in time, however, an additional one-hundred-and-twenty-thousand foster children are in situations where they cannot be returned to their families and are therefore awaiting adoption. Again, statistics vary somewhat, but it’s agreed that the longer a child remains in care awaiting adoption, the less “attractive” they become to potential parents. While the average time for a child to be in foster care is somewhat over one year, it’s estimated that as many as sixty percent of these children remain in foster care from two to five years and that twenty percent may remain in foster care for more than five years. Roughly twenty thousand of them, depending on the state in which they’re being cared for, “age out” of foster care, having reached the age of eighteen or twenty-one years without having been adopted.

ASSEMBLYMAN DURSO MEETS WITH MASSAPEQUA PARK CUB SCOUT TROOP 776 - Assemblyman Michael Durso (R-Massapequa Park) recently met with Cub Scout Pack 776 of Massapequa Park to fulfill a scouting requirement to meet with an elected official. Visiting with Assemblyman Durso gave the Cub Scouts an opportunity to ask the Assemblyman questions about his job duties, what it takes to be a good citizen, and things they can do in the community to help others. “I was happy to sit down with Cub Scout Pack 776 and take some great questions from these inquisitive kids,” Durso said. “We discussed activities can do in their community to make a difference, how government works, and the importance of civic engagement. Thank you to the Scouts, the Den Leaders, and a big thank you to the parents for keeping their children involved in the community.” After their hour-long Q & A, Assemblyman Durso presented each scout with a New York State Certificate of Merit.

A Touching Tribute To Veterans To mark Veterans Day, students and staff at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are honoring the brave men and women who have served in the armed forces with a writing campaign and a wall of
honor. Students made cards and wrote letters to veterans to thank them for their service, many with personalized messages of gratitude. The cards and letters were sent to several organizations including the American
Legion, Beacon House, Long Island State Veterans Home and Northport Veterans Hospital. Several classes also made digital presentations. More than 100 veterans were featured on a wall of honor near the gymnasium.
Students and staff were invited to submit a picture of a family member who served in the military, along with his or her name and branch of service.
