Honoring Veterans
irst graders at Grace Episcopal School in Massapequa welcomed a special visit from over 20 time-honored veterans and Legislator Michael Venditto in honor of Veterans Day. Each veteran went to visit a classroom, where students prepared questions to ask them. The veterans educated the children about their service in the armed forces, and the students were very inspired by their medals of honor and recollections.

To be a child once again, that carefree spirit, unconcerned by the world outside of our miniature universe – one of Barbie dolls and tea parties and recess and school friends – shielded from the stress of reality for as long as our parents can protect us. Back to that sense of innocence when we assumed that all those “best” friendships from elementary school would never fade… when we never anticipated a day that those relatives we loved so dearly would ever leave us… when all was right with the world – our world – and
we had no need or desire to look beyond the immediate. Some would say this sense of idealism was misplaced and only served to make the subsequent realities that much harsher; in fact, just a quick look at the children of today would suggest a great loss of that innocence I reminisce over now. And which is better? To grow up jaded, or to develop that cynicism over time? Or, better yet, to not let outside forces beyond our control shape our being to the point of losing our sense of self in the process? If only the right answer was always the simplest. So we grow up, and we
grow. And we realize that each day brings with it new obstacles and reality checks that we may have never anticipated. But this is life, as childhood becomes adulthood, and ultimately, this growth is all part of that process. We can’t have it any other way – and we shouldn’t want to. People come into our lives for a reason, this much is true. Sometimes they stay, other times they go; but either way, we are never meant to be the same. Although, there are definitely days when we could all use a little time on the swings at recess with our friends.

On Sunday, November 3, more than 600 cancer survivors and family members were honored for their strength and courage at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s 9th Annual Cancer Survivors’ Day held at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. Attendees were motivated by award winning vocalist, entertainer and cancer survivor, Kevin Sharp. In remission since 1991, he is the only Make-AWish “wish” child to
become the wish request of other kids, bringing his experience with a rare form of cancer full circle. Like many patients diagnosed with cancer, Mr. Sharp is a survivor whose challenging experience has been an inspiration to others. “Cancer Survivors’ Day is a great opportunity to bring together a group of people whose lives have been touched by cancer and to affirm the possibility of a quality life after a diagnosis of cancer,” said Chief of
Hematology/Oncology Kenneth Gold, MD. “Our expanding community of cancer survivors stands as a shining testament to the advances in cancer treatment at Good Sam. Massapequa High School’s Family and Consumer Science Department, in conjunction with its Child Study course, will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents. High School students enrolled in the course have successfully completed the Parenting and Child Development course and are now ready for a hands-on approach to learning, according to Anna Gregg, child study director for the district. The students will plan, prepare and implement interdisciplinary activities within a thematic unit for the preschool students. Preschool will begin the week of March 10th, 2014 and continue for about 11 weeks until “graduation”. RAGAMUFFIN PARADE - Massapequa Park’s Rag-A-Muffin Parade was recently held. Town officials, local legislators, members of the Knights of Columbus, parents and lots of children turned out for the occasion on a beautiful fall day. The event was held on the weekend prior to Halloween, so the youngsters delighted in the excitement of wearing their costumes prior to Halloween and having an extra day of fun.
VETERANS VISIT - First graders at Grace Episcopal School in Massapequa welcomed a special visit from over 20 time-honored veterans and Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto in honor of Veterans Day. Each veteran went to visit a classroom where students prepared questions to ask them. The veterans educated the children about their service in the armed forcesm and the students were very inspired by the vets’ medals of honor and recollections of war.
THANK YOU CEREMONY - A ceremony thanking the Town for the building of a new Challenger Baseball field at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa was recently held. Challenger Baseball is a Little League-sanctioned program that gives children with special needs the opportunity to play baseball in an environment structured to their abilities. Building upon the success of the first Challenger Field that was created at John J. Burns Park, the Town created another dedicated field. Both fields meet the special needs of the players.
DECK HOCKEY OPENING DAY - Players from the St. Rose of Lima Deck Hockey League took a break in the action to pose for the camera. The ball, which is used in deck hockey in place of the traditional puck, was recently dropped on the fall season. Deck hockey is played on a flat surface with the players on foot, as opposed to traditional ice hockey in which the players wear skates. PAWS FOR PARKINSONS - The 2013 Optimism Walk and Paws for Parkinson’s event was recently held at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. The annual event, which benefits Parkinson’s research, featured a one mile walk through the park, as well as Halloween themed activities, refreshments, giveaways, raffles, doggie costume contest, and a concert by “Any Way You Want It,” the renowned Journey tribute band. Many dog owners brought their best friends to the park to enjoy a fun day in the crisp autumn air, while also helping out a worthy cause.
SLEEPY HOLLOW 5K - The 13th Annual Sleepy Hollow 5K Charity Run Walk was recently held at Brady Park in the Village of Massapequa Park. Proceeds from the event benefited the Hagedorn Little Village School for Developmentally Disabled Children, which provides educational and therapeutic services to children with special needs. In addition to the 5K race, there was also a Kids Fun Run, so children could participate in the enjoyable event.

When Berner Middle School eighth-grader Jason Kopp, 13, separated his growth plate in his shoulder and couldn’t play baseball, he spent his weekends crafting brightly colored rubber band bracelets and came up with an idea. Knowing October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Jason figured he could turn his crafting skills into a fundraiser for breast cancer research. After discussing the idea with family members, Jason made a sign out of pink Oaktag, dressed himself in pink attire — everything from socks to sweatshirts to sunglasses — and set up a stand, much like a lemonade stand, on the sidewalk of his Massapequa Park home, located near Sunrise Highway. He displayed his pink creations, priced at $2.00 per bracelet, $1.00 per ring. By the end of the first October weekend he raised more than $100. Fired up by the response, Jason tripled his pink wardrobe for the cause and
rode his bike around his neighborhood handing out fliers. “I decided to set a goal of $500. So I brought them into school to sell to my friends, and then used social media to spread the word,” he said. By the end of October, Jason surpassed his goal by raising more than $600 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Jason had no personal connection to the disease when he started his fundraiser, but his efforts hit home when his mother’s high school friend, Tracy Fitzpatrick, a breast cancer survivor, came to visit and support him. “That was the best part of the fundraiser because that opened my eyes to why I was doing this,” Jason said. “I only spent about $30 on rubber bands and made a lot more to help find a cure. I really enjoyed doing it. It brought a lot of smiles. The lesson I learned here is, ‘you have to give back’.” Jason also had the
backing of his teachers and administrators at Berner Middle School. Principal Jason Esposito said, “Jason’s initiative to make a difference in the lives of those stricken with this disease is inspiring and is a shining example for all of our students to emulate. We are extremely proud of him.” Spanish teacher Jamie Mare said, “I was so impressed that he did this on his own, with no connection to the school that I had to help spread the word to my colleagues to support his efforts.” “The world needs more Jason Kopps,” added William Herr, Jason’s guidance counselor.
