The Riverhead Correctional Facility held a special unveiling ceremony yesterday for its new “Splashes of Hope” mural inside the jail, which was painted by incarcerated youth under the guidance of master muralist, Kirk Larsen. The project was funded and sponsored by “Splashes of Hope,” a Huntington-based nonprofit organization, and made possible through the generous donation of Theresa Santmann of Babylon. Santmann, who is also the Vice President of the organization’s Executive Board, had previously sponsored four mural panels in the jail’s Visiting Room. The mural was painted over five weeks during the months of September and October.

The Annual March of Dimes’ Signature Chefs Auction, held October 27th at Carlyle on the Green, Bethpage State Park, was a wonderful demonstration of culinary expertise and a unique way of demonstrating support for the health of premature babies by preventing premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality. South Oaks Hospital, a member of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, joined many of Long Island’s elite restaurants and chefs, highlighting special menu options for more than 200 guests. Chef Phil Sosnicki, head chef at South Oaks Hospital, was assisted by health system colleagues Michael Kiley, Tony Meo and Lyndon Espiritu. The Town of Oyster Bay’s popular Youth Dance Programs are returning this winter for residents and their children seeking to enjoy a fun-filled class of music and activity during the cold season, according to Town Councilman Joseph D. Muscarella. “The Youth Dance Programs offer residents a great opportunity to enhance their child’s development and rhythm through creative movement, songs, and games,” Councilman Muscarella said. Registration for the
Youth Dance Program will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department Recreation Office (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa) on Monday, December 1st from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please note that space is limited and the Youth Dance Program is open to Town of Oyster Bay residents only. The Youth Dance Program is a five week program for boys and girls between the ages of three and four that runs from January 5th through February 9th, 2015 on Mondays or Thursdays (10
to 10:50 a.m. or 11 to 11:50 a.m.) with one class a week per child. Every Youth Dance Program will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center (located at Bethpage Community Park), in Community Room 1. Sheriff DeMarco praised the organization and thanked everyone at Splashes of Hope for their continued support, “I am touched by Ms. Santmann’s generosity and I thank everyone at Splashes of Hope for making this project a success. It undoubtedly left an impression on the youth who participated by imparting some confidence and helping them to realize their talents. It also brightened up the hallway for our staff, and presents a positive image for all of the inmates who come through the facility.”

Ready, Set... Ready Yet? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Getting ready, for a girl, is a complicated affair. Rare is the female who can simply roll out of bed, jump in and out of the shower in 5 minutes, throw on the first outfit she pulls out of the closet, skip the makeup and extensive hair prep – and just go. I admire those who can, really, I do. Imagine how many hours, days, weeks even, that are saved over the course of just one year – time that could be spent out and about, actually living. But no, most of us have a whole routine, one that,
if anything, becomes lengthier and more complex the bigger the occasion. Like a weekday wedding, for instance. Forget attempting to go into work, leave a little early and freshen up at home on the fly. No, I need to take the entire day off, allotting at least a good five/six hours to the beautification process. Crazy? Perhaps. But who wants to rush? It’s nice to have some time to kick back and relax, allow plenty of time for hair mishaps, smudged makeup, chipped nail polish, runs in your pantyhose, traffic… all
the wonderful nuisances that only seem to happen when you have somewhere important to go. Of course, in the end, people rarely notice all the effort. Everything falls into place, all is well and the time and effort… well, you probably could have cut it in half and come out looking much the same. But such is the life of a girl. We’re wired differently. Think how many business industries thrive on our collective neuroses. You’re welcome. And now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to start getting ready.

Berner Middle School has launched a “One School-One Book” initiative for the 2014-2015 school year in an effort to integrate social-emotional learning into the culture at Alfred G. Berner Middle School in alignment with the Dignity for All Students Act. Through the initiative, students are learning beyond the classroom content by reading a common text, R.J. Palacio’s Wonder, with all staff members and the greater school community. The book is about a 10-year-old boy with facial differences and his experience attending public school for the first time. As a part of this initiative, staff and students are not only analyzing the text, but are looking deeper at

SMART SAFETY? They’re bright yellow, they sit around your child’s neck and they are the main reason as to why your child complained the first two weeks of school more than any other year prior. The new Massapequa High School student ID lanyards are known to everyone in the school as a cumbersome burden that serves no real and effective purpose. This new form of “security and safety enforcement,” as Doctor Barbra Williams puts it, “is to make sure that the security staff can prevent unwarranted intruders from entering the school.” Robert Catinella, a Massapequa High School Senior, compares the new lanyards to “dog collars” and, just like a dog, when a student forgets his collar, he or she is subjected to unfair punishment. When one person forgets his or her “collar,” they are given a lunch

detention, meaning that they cannot go outside for lunch for the day. In addition, that lunch detention can be found on one’s permanent record. For some kids, this could mean everything when it come to getting into a good college. Who is to say that these lanyards, and the supposed purpose they serve, will even be a factor in a high stakes situation? If the school district wants to increase safety, they need to increase security, not tag their students with an ID card that serves no other purpose other than to act as a red flag for security guards. And, to be completely honest, a yellow nylon lanyard isn’t going to stop any one crazy person from getting into a school building. Rumors have been circulating in the building between the staff and students that these lanyards will soon have a magnetic strip in them, which will be required

Along with every student arriving in the middle lobby for all periods, this new policy, if implemented for the 2015-2016 school year, would make an already broken system chaotic and inefficient. Massapequa School District is not alone in this new wave of “smart safety.” Students in Farmingdale, Amityville and Copiague high schools are being subjected to this plague too. The only way to fix the problem of school safety is to actually address the issue properly and efficiently. In this post Sandy Hook school shooting society we live in, we must not forget that, as a community, we should be pushing for safety and not some false sense of security.

Walk For A Cause The East Lake Elementary School physical education teachers kicked off the 2014-2015 school year by coordinating a “Walk for a Cause” fitness challenge to raise awareness for any cause their students wished to support. “We never really know the hardships our neighbors are experiencing, so we thought this would be a great opportunity to allow the students to express themselves in a healthy way,” said teachers Laura Cinelli and Steve Donovan. “Because the physical education character
trait for the month was responsibility, this event allowed each and every student to take on the responsibility of raising awareness for something they hold close to their heart.” A week prior to the event, students were asked who they were supporting and why, which triggered meaningful discussions in class. During the event, students jogged or speed walked through an awareness trail for the full duration of class. The awareness trail consisted of a jogging path and small obstacles as the gymnasium
was decorated with each student’s support star blast. At the completion of each lap, students collected a colored pipe cleaner which was tallied up at the end of class to determine the total number of laps completed per class. East Lake families were also invited to join in this event by walking or biking to school with their children. “This was a great way to show their support and demonstrate that when we stick together, we can all make a difference,” Cinelli said.

On October 6th, eight members of the St. John the Baptist GENESIS program presented their own research projects to over 70 guests, students, family members and faculty at the first St. John the Baptist Scientific Research Symposium. These students are in their third year of the GENESIS program. This program is designed to teach students the fundamentals of reading, understanding and then conducting their own original research projects. The symposium served as their first chance to showcase their original work. Students presented on a number of different topics spanning the range of sciences from psychology to mathematics and even environmental chemistry.
