years, we have hosted this outstanding event and it has brought tremendous joy to our community’s families, and especially our young people.” The Annual Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade is typically held on the Sunday prior to Halloween. But, this year’s event fell on Halloween, which provided some extra atmosphere to an event already charged with excitement. “It was great day for the children,” Chief Maroldo said. “They got to wear their costumes at the parade prior to Trick or Treating and later saw Santa Claus himself riding on top of the Department’s Ladder Truck!” Youngsters also had a chance to win a bicycle or other great raffle prizes and enjoyed hot dogs and orange drinks served by the first responders. Chief Maroldo said the parade is extremely popular because it brings everyone together in celebration. “We are a tight knit community
and this event personifies the special bonds we all share as North Massapequa residents,” Chief Maroldo said. “Our department members are extremely proud of this event and I know our community is looking forward to many more years of the Rag-A-
Muffin parade. The Chief thanked all who participated, both parents and children alike, and also acknowledged the event’s sponsors and the support of the Plainedge High School Band, which led the procession and played brilliantly. “The Plainedge Band is amazing,” Chief

and civic engagement of high school students. She conducted a survey of students from multiple high schools and then analyzed her data. Sarah said she learned that when teachers foster intellectual discussions and make strong connections between historical events and the present day, students are more likely to be active citizens. She is very active herself, serving as the Northeast regional technologist for a nonprofit organization aimed at gun violence prevention, and said her involvement is the result of having very engaging social studies teachers. “I loved discovering something that wasn’t known yet,” she said. “Research is so important because we can close that gap of knowledge. All the work that I was putting in over the year has paid off.” While projects are done independently, students do have guidance along the way. Teacher Dana Robbins served as her expert adviser
and Christopher Diehl provided mentorship for statistical analysis. Sarah earned every possible point on both her paper, which was scored by the College Board, and her oral defense, which was presented in front of a panel of Massapequa educators. Social Studies Curriculum Associate Dr. Brian Trapani, who oversees the AP Capstone program, said that the oral defense is extremely challenging because students not only have to prepare a strong presentation but they also have to answer follow-up questions from the panel. Beyond high school, Sarah hopes to continue to be involved in research and a said the AP Capstone program has prepared her well for the future. At Massapequa High School, she is president of the history club, secretary of mathletes and a member of the French, National and Tri-M Music honor societies.

Project 9 Line is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue Their focus is to bridge the communication gap between veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art.

Patrick Donohue is a veteran himself and has an inspiring story of his own. He served in the Army on active duty from 2008 to 2012. He was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan from May of 2010 to April of 2011. Later, he reenlisted into the Army reserves, which he served in from 2014 to 2016. After combat, Patrick got hit right away with some less-than-ideal feelings, such as anxiety and depression. “I was totally lost and alone and I had pushed away everybody I loved and fear ruled my life. Anxiety and depression filled my day and I never thought that I would be able to be a regular person again,” said Donohue. “I avoided everything and everybody to best protect myself from the unknown. Finally when the pain became so great I had a moment of clarity and I asked for help. I checked into the VA hospital in Northport and began the process of what ultimately turned my life around.” Slowly but surely, things started to turn around for him. While he was in the VA hospital, he was exposed to some art and wellness programs that completely transformed the way he viewed himself. “I started writing poetry, meditating, and doing yoga and these activities had a profound impact on me.” He was looking to see if any veteran organization offered those programs and services outside of the VA and he didn’t find any, so at that time he decided that he would build it himself. Probably not even realizing how courageous and strong he really was, Patrick then wrote a business plan for what became this organization (Project 9 Line), so that he could bring art and wellness programs to other veterans on Long Island who might also be struggling. Little did he know that participating in those wellness programs and helping other veterans would become his calling and passion in life.

In late 2020, Donohue was sworn in as an attorney and started his own law firm focused on veterans law, specifically VA disability and discharge upgrades. To this day he still runs that firm, and he also is an

“Just a few years ago I had a tough time integrating and now I’m a productive and happy father, husband and attorney. I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I float in a float tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible. In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.” Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them. Students from the Helping Hands club at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus recently got an inside look at an organization that provides a critical service on Long Island. A group of 10 ninth graders visited the Island Harvest distribution center in Melville on Nov. 1, the club’s first field trip since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Helping Hands members spent three hours at the facility, learning about Island Harvest’s hunger relief efforts and volunteering their time to put together food packages for needy families. Students created an assembly line to
put together boxes and fill them with specific food items. “It was a good opportunity to help people that need food,” student Brielle Dargenio said. “I felt grateful to be able to help.” The group was able to interact with several of Island Harvest’s regular volunteers and learned that the charitable organization puts together thousands of those food kits each month, which are distributed to community centers around Long Island. Ames students contributed a few hundred in their short time at the distribution center.
“It’s important to give back to the community and help in any way that you can,” added Bridget Parkes. Faridah Benhammou said that the trip gave her greater appreciation for all that she has, and noted the importance of supporting people who don’t have as much. Advisers Alyssa Levine and Nicole Reiss said they are hoping to visit Island Harvest again during the school year. Students Strive To Stomp Out Breast Cancer
Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District marked Breast Cancer Awareness Month with its annual Think Pink Day on Oct. 21. Proceeds from the day were donated to the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, a nonprofit organization that provides patient support services, education and advocacy programs. The student council, under the direction of advisers Kristen Meoli and Denise Robertson,
sold shirts to the students and staff. The National Junior Honor Society, led by Susan Beitzinger and Juliette Happe, raised money by selling ghost lollipops. Chiefs Challenge, advised by Ms. Happe and Caroline Glynn, educated Berner students about breast cancer with posters and facts during morning announcements. They also sold pink masks, buttons and bracelets to the faculty and staff. Donations to the Babylon
Breast Cancer Coalition were made in memory of Suzanne Scanio, a former Unqua Elementary School teacher. Additionally, fall sports teams raised money for breast cancer research, with proceeds going to the Side-Out Foundation. “Even though we are just students,” eight grader Alyssa Payero said, “it is important to show people who have this disease that they are not alone and that they are supported.”

Walsh Invites Families to Fall Dek Hockey Jamboree Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invites families to watch the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Deck Hockey League Fall Jamboree and register for the Spring Season on Saturday, November 13th from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Ellsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale. Dek hockey is a variation of traditional ice hockey, where the games are played sans skates on the ‘dek’ of an ice rink after the ice has melted away. After an exciting fall season, members of the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Dek Hockey League will face
off for the championship at the Jamboree on November 13th. “The Town’s Youth Dek Hockey League provides children aged 6-14 with the opportunity to improve their hockey skills alongside our expert coaching staff, learn important life lessons like good sportsmanship, and make new friends,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Dek Hockey is a really fun variation of traditional ice hockey, and I am excited for the boys and girls of our Town who will compete in the Jamboree!” While the Jamboree
takes place, families can register their children for the Spring 2022 Youth Dek Hockey League. Open to Boys and Girls aged 6-14, the Spring program will feature 10 games and practices over a 10 week period, concluding with a playoff competition: the Jamboree. The Spring Season will begin in April 2022 at Allen and SyossetWoodbury Community Park. Registration will take place at the Allen Park Community Room (45 Motor Ave, Farmingdale) on Saturday, November 13th from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The program will cost
$95 for residents, and $110 for non-residents. Each child will need to provide their own equipment, a list of which will be supplied upon registration. Families must provide proof of residency and a copy of their child’s birth certificate at registration. Only checks or money orders made payable to “Town of Oyster Bay” will be accepted.
