No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until

then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

From October 17th-27th, students in all grades and all buildings in the district voted for president, U.S. senator and congressman. “I thought it was important for all students in the district to vote because civic engagement

is a part of the social studies curriculum at every level,” said Brian Trapani, the district’s curriculum associate for social studies. “There’s no more authentic way than to have students participate in a mock election during a presidential year.” When the results came in, Republican candidate

Donald Trump won at each of the nine buildings, besting Democrat Hillary Clinton and third-party candidates Jill Stein and Gary Johnson. The student voters also favored incumbent Sen. Charles Schumer at seven schools and Congressman Peter King across the district. Before the vote, teachers

discussed the election with students using resources such as PBS Kids and Junior Scholastic. In the younger grades, teachers gave a little background on each candidate and discussed what it means to be president, while in the older grades there was much more discussion on the issues and positions of

each candidate. Follow-up discussions will take place in classes following the November 8th election. Trapani explained that the purpose was to show students what it means to be involved in democracy and how to make a thoughtful, personal decision.
