Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board joined with the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District and hundreds of local residents in dedicating ‘Billy Joel Way’ and presenting a ‘key to the town’ to legendary musician and environmental advocate Billy Joel. Officials, including Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Tom Hand, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca, Receiver Jeff Pravato, as
well as County Legislator Rose Marie Walker, also welcomed members of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District’s 6th Grade Advanced Band from James Vernon School, whose students performed for the music icon. “Nothing chronicles the stories of our lives quite like music, and no one has told the story of what it was like to grow up here on Long Island quite like Billy Joel,” said Supervisor Saladino. “His lyrics speak for every one of us. We identify with
him, and because of him, we all know that we share many of the same feelings, thoughts and experiences. In many ways, he brings us together as suburban Long Islanders.” As a humanitarian, The Joel Foundation has made and pledged over $7 million in charitable donations with a focus on music education and humanitarian aid. While he has supported countless vital global relief efforts, Joel has often turned his attention to helping Long Islanders, as evidenced by

Saladino And Town Board To Collect DVDs For U.S. Troops & Children’s Hospitals
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced a partnership with Massapequa-based “Big Hy for Heroes” in an effort to collect DVDs for those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces as well as movies for children’s hospitals. Donations will be accepted November 1st through November 30th and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie nights this holiday season. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with Big Hy for Heroes for our 5th Annual DVD Collection Drive and send thousands of DVDs to troops serving around the globe as well as to children receiving care in local hospitals. Help support these brave men, women and children by donating DVDs.” The Big Hy for Heroes organization was founded in 2002 by Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman who, along with his son Arthur Strachman, personally began sending DVDs to U.S. troops overseas. Over the years, Big Hy for Heroes has shipped hundreds of thousands of DVDs all around the world, and continues to do so today. Exciting, suspenseful, comedy and classic DVDs are among the most requested by the troops for movie nights. Children’s movies are needed for local hospitals. The Disney film series “Camp Rock” goes from the big screen to the stage as it will be this year’s musical production by the drama club at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. There will be a pair of performances on Nov. 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. A cast of 87 students will get to showcase their acting, dancing and singing talents. The lead actors are: • Jack Findling, eighth grade, as Nate Gray • James Ruiz, eighth grade, as Shane Gray • Dominic Lovaglio, seventh grade, as Jason Gray • Kaitlyn Patterson, eighth grade, as Mitchie Torres • Nicolina Abiuso, eighth grade, as Caitlyn Geller • Matthew Fanelli, seventh grade, as Luke Williams • Quinn Flaherty, sixth grade, as Dana Turner • Michael Colberg, eighth grade, as Axel Turner • Ryan Martinez, eighth grade, as Brown Cesario

Major musical numbers include “Brand New Day,” “Fire,” “It’s On” and “This is Me.” “It’s a fun, happy show where kids get to be kids,” Director Katie Pearsall said. Ms. Pearsall is supported by choreographer Danielle Coutieri, vocal director Christina Guando, production assistant Siobhan Healy and stage crew manager Jason Cavanaugh. The student-actors have been hard at work for weeks learning lines and lyrics, and fine-tuning the nuances of their roles. Nicolina said her character, Caitlyn, is very different from her real personality and she welcomes the acting challenge. “I can step out of myself and into the shoes of my character,” she said. “I’m looking forward to being able to show everybody what we’ve been working so hard
