Young artists at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned how to create threedimensional work using only two dimensions. For an optical illusion project, fourth graders learned techniques to give the appearance of depth. Students first studied the work of British artist Bridget Riley, known for her optical illusion masterpieces. Then, under the direction of art teacher Marissa Sondo, they used curved lines and shading to make 3D forms on a 2D surface.

WOMAN’S CLUB OF MASSAPEQUA - “The Child Welfare Department of Woman’s Club of Massapequa came together to finalize details regarding it’s annual fundraising event. A Brunch will be held November 24, 2019 at Southward Ho Country Club, Bay Shore NY. Raffles entertainment and a magnificent brunch is planned. It is open to the public and those interested in attending may contact Fran Bassett, cochair at 516-972-0880 by Nov 14. First graders had lots of pumpkins to pick from and they also had some help as Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District hosted its annual pumpkin patch on Oct. 21. For the yearly fall tradition,
the back field was covered in pumpkins, and each first grader was accompanied by a fifth grade buddy to select the right one. To make the event even more festive, all fifth graders dressed up as
scarecrows. After picking the pumpkins, which first graders got to take home, students from both grades went back into the school and enjoyed snacks together.

Veterans Day begins with Armistice Day Veterans Day is a byproduct of the end of World War I, when Germany and the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ceasing fighting and establishing terms of peace. On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were held. Armistice Day was initially a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I only, states History.com. Growing Together “Let Grow” projects are a staple in Katelyn Mulvey’s third grade class at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, which help students become more independent and achieve personal growth. For a recent assignment, students had to think of tasks they were ready to do on their own, without the help of an adult. Ideas included climbing a tree, opening a lemonade stand,
going fishing, mailing a letter and making breakfast using the toaster. Children wrote down their ideas on pieces of green paper and added these leaves to their “Let Grow” tree outside of the classroom. Some students even included photos of themselves doing their independent activity. “One way that children acquire the resilience and self-control they need to succeed is by doing some things on their own,” she

said. “Students went home, talked to their parents about doing something on their own and that they felt ready to do, and were exhilarated after completing their project.” Ms. Mulvey added that the students will do one “Let Grow” project per month and continue to add leaves to the tree throughout the school year.
Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone joined with Town Councilman Thomas P. Hand to announce the kick-off of this year’s “Toys for Tots” Collection Drive, which will run through December 12th, in an effort to collect new, unwrapped toys to be used as gifts for children throughout the community. “Under the direction of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, the Toys for Tots Drive follows a mission to help ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness,”
Councilman Hand said. “By helping those in need experience the wonderful embrace of the holiday season, contributor’s will get to play an active role in bringing happiness to one of our nation’s most valuable resources for the future, our children,” Councilman Macagnone said. For those who wish to donate to “Toys for Tots”, collection boxes can be found in the following Town facilities: • Oyster Bay Town Hall North (54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay); • Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa);

Learning how to stay safe is just as important as reading, writing, adding and subtracting, and students at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District were fortunate to get a safety lesson from the experts. October is Fire Prevention Month and volunteers from the Massapequa Fire
Department visited schools throughout the district, including Lockhart on Oct. 8. They discussed fire safety in the home including the importance of having working smoke detectors, knowing multiple ways out and never playing with matches. Several children were called up on stage to demonstrate stop, drop and roll. Firefighters dressed up a teacher in
their gear so, in case of an emergency, students know that under all of that equipment is a person who wants to help them. Each student was provided with goodie bag that included a fire safety coloring book, magnet, stickers and information about a fire safety poster contest.
