Town Plants Over Million Clam Seeds In Great South Bay

The clams – totaling 1.5 million – were provided by grower Bill Zeller of Captree Clams. “We are pleased to partner with the DEC and Stony Brook University as we continue to expand our shellfish restoration program to our south shore, following our tremendous success in increasing planting on the north shore by millions,” said Supervisor Saladino. “These adult clams are placed into spawner sanctuaries within the greater conservation management areas located
in South Oyster Bay, in areas that have been set aside based on data that has been collected about the physical circulation of the local water.” Based on the information gathered, Stony Brook determined where shellfish larvae from the spawn of the clams will drift in the next year. Using these calculations, they will continue to monitor the success of clams that are planted and spawned as a result of this effort.
Model Train Show to Benefit Oyster Bay Railroad Museum
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola today announced that Trainville Hobby Depot will host a Model Train Show on Saturday, November 20th and Sunday, November 21st from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville. The Model Train Show includes operating model layouts
coordinated by Trainville Hobby Depot. Donations are being accepted at the exhibit to support the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum. “We are pleased to partner with Trainville Hobby Depot, who coordinates or participates in many hobby shows that benefit the fundraising efforts of a sponsoring organization,” said Councilman Labriola. “Assisting groups that not only bring a fun and

Clubs Reinvigorate Student Life

Ninth period ends just before 3 p.m. on weekdays at Berner Middle School but that final bell does not signal the end of the day for many students. Extracurricular activities are back in person this year, after meeting virtually last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Afterschool clubs are an important part of student life at any middle school, and Massapequa’s sixth, seventh and eighth graders have more than two dozen options. They can explore art, technology and world languages, get involved in student government and community service, and focus on their mental and physical health. Chiefs Challenge brings together students who are motivated to improve school culture. They work on promoting major schoolwide events such as Think Pink Day in October and Character Education Day in November. Advisers
Caroline Glynn and Juliette Happe said that they are thrilled to be back in person because Chiefs Challenge meetings involve hands-on activities. At the most recent meeting, students made pink and white banners and assembled ribbon pins for Berner’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month initiative. The Mural Club also is constantly engaged in hands-on projects. To begin the year, artists worked on a mural for this year’s One School, One Book initiative. All Berner students are reading and discussing “Slacker” by Gordon Korman. Each student in the Mural Club painted a colorcoded square using window paint, which will then be transferred to the glass block windows. Adviser Alison Clemente said this allowed dozens of studentartists to contribute a piece of mural. Later in the
year, they plan to create a painting for the renovated music suite. Teamwork is an essential element for the Robotics Club, and in-person meetings foster that collaboration as students build, program and test their robots. Adviser Mike Spiritus enjoys seeing students come together to solve problems to get their robots to perform the desired tasks. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced that the Town is adding three new pickleball courts as the sport continues to gain popularity through the Town. The courts will be located at H. Garrick Williams Park in Massapequa, located on Ritter Avenue in Massapequa. “Pickleball continues to be a growing sport in our communities and these courts will provide an even greater opportunity for fans to participate,” said Supervisor Saladino. “These three new courts will add yet another great venue for our residents to enjoy all the fun this sport has to offer.” Pickleball is a fun sport for all ages, played with a wooden paddle and lightweight plastic

Several student-artists from Massapequa High School have recently received accolades for their extraordinary work. The Long Island Arts Alliance presented merit awards in the 2021-2022 Scholar-Artist competition to seniors Olivia Cristadoro, in the visual arts category, and Olivia Medford, in media arts. They were among only 40 students from across Long Island to be recognized this year.
Scholar-artist applicants must be nominated by a high school teacher, represent the highest level of artistic excellence and demonstrate superior academic achievement with an unweighted grade point average of 90 or above. Each student must also submit an essay and a portfolio of artwork or performance. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County awarded several Massapequa students
in the Nassau County Student Art Competition. Olivia Matos was a gold level award winner and Anna Campanaro, Maya Hassett, Rachel Knight and Tara Villalba earned silver awards. Valerie Mitchell received a best-in-show award. Submissions were judged by professional artists and winning pieces will be featured in CCE’s annual gardening calendar.

The Power Of Positivity Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean? That was the question posed to ninth grader in their health classes at the Massapequa High School Ames Campus to begin a lesson on social and emotional health. Health department chairwoman Denise Baldinger told students that they will face a lot of adversity in their lives, and it is up to them how
they can handle those challenges. When faced with heat, the strong carrot wilts and loses strength and an egg becomes hard on the inside, but the coffee bean releases its fragrance and flavor. This metaphor showed students how they can take a negative experience and turn it into a positive one. Challenges, Ms. Baldinger explained,
contain life lessons that can help everyone become better people. Students then committed to selfimprovement by filling a bulletin board with sticky notes, identifying personality traits that they would like to change. They expressed a desire to be more cheerful and upbeat, be more organized, procrastinate less and show more concern for others.

In addition, Receiver Pravato encourages residents who recently purchased a home, condominium or co-op unit, or recently refinanced, to be sure that notification in writing is sent to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, NY 11771-1539 or email receiveroftaxes@ oysterbay-ny.gov “This will ensure that tax bills are received promptly by the homeowner,” Pravato said. “A homeowner relying on a
bank, attorney, or Nassau County to notify the Tax Office may find there is a delay in billing the homeowner directly, which can lead to the imposition of a late payment penalty.” “When writing, property owners should include the legal property description, including the school district, section, block, and lot numbers, as well as the name and address to whom tax bills should be directed. In the case of condominiums, the building and unit number should be noted,” Pravato said. Residents may also report their information in person by visiting the Office of the Receiver of Taxes at Town Hall North
at 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay or Town Hall South at 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa. Office hours and outdoor walk up windows are open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. to assist residents. The Receiver noted that property owners residing in incorporated villages must also notify their village assessor. Homeowners requiring further assistance should contact the Office of the Receiver of Taxes at (516) 624-6400. “The knowledgeable and courteous tax information specialists on my staff will be happy to assist you,” concluded Pravato.
