Back in the Spotlight This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a ﬂood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood ﬂoor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms flailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very first dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

Global Reading Students at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are sharing their thoughts about books with their peers from all over the country. Fourthgraders have been taking part in the Global Read Aloud, which runs from October 3rd through November 11th. During their weekly library period, the students video conferenced using Field Trip Zoom with classes on Long Island and in other states, including as far away as Seattle. They also used Padlet to share their answers about questions on books the classes were commonly reading.

This year, students are discussing books by Global Read Aloud’s featured author and illustrator Lauren Castillo. As librarian Tara Gonzalez reads each book, students in both classes participate in turn and talk discussions about different plot points. When she finishes, she then asks a question related to the theme of the book. For example, after sharing Castillo’s book “The Reader,” students from Lockhart and an elementary school in New Hyde Park were asked to identify their favorite places to read and share their answers with each other. ELECTION DAY 2016 This presidential campaign is like no other. One candidate is a successful businessman who beat all the odds, plus 16 other Republicans, and became the Republican nominee for President. The other candidate is a lawyer and a lifetime politician, who beat Bernie Sanders and became the first woman Democratic nominee. The tone of this campaign has been quite intense throughout the primaries, the conventions and the three debates. In many ways, the country has never been more divided. You have Republican Donald J. Trump, who wants to “Drain the Swamp” of Washington D.C. and rebuild our country.

You have Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, who wants to continue with the current path we are on of big government being involved in many aspects of our lives. The media distractions have been unbearable, and arguably quite one-sided in most of their coverage. No matter who you support, nobody condones distasteful words spoken or irresponsible and potentially criminal actions taken by either candidate - and I think you know what and who I am talking about in each instance! Putting all this aside, you have a simple choice to make: Trump - who has earned money, power and fame and wants to help our country restabilize and prosper

once again. He wants to cut government waste, repeal and replace the affordable healthcare act, rebuild and properly care for our military, and secure our borders for everyone’s safety. Clinton - who also has money, power and fame, offers us four more years of what we now have; continuing the affordable healthcare act, big government, big government spending and open borders for a global society. Massapequa High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department, in conjunction with its Child Study course, will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents. High school students enrolled in the Child Study course have successfully completed the Parenting and Child Development course and are now ready for a handson approach to learning. The students will plan, prepare and implement interdisciplinary activities within a thematic unit for the preschool students. Preschool will begin around March 9th, 2017 and continue for approximately 11 weeks to “graduation.” There are two sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays or Wednesdays and Fridays, each from 9:55 a.m. to

12 noon. Children must attend both days of the session. A donation of $60 per child to help defray expenses is encouraged. Applications will be available by the front security desk, or in the general office of Massapequa High School, through December 23rd, and can be picked up between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Applications may also

be downloaded from the Massapequa School District website, www.msd.k12. ny.us. Copies of completed applications must be returned to the general office at Massapequa High School by Tuesday, January 3rd, 2017. To be eligible, children must be between the ages of 3, as of March 9th, 2017, and 5, but not attending kindergarten. They must

also be toilet trained. Enrollment in the popular program is limited to 18 children per session and selection will be by lottery drawing with Massapequa residents and previous students receiving priority. Acceptance notifications will be emailed in late January 2017.

experience was to teach students about the different elements of a story and show them the importance of using evidence to back up their arguments. “It’s authentic learning,” second-grade teacher Mary Fusco said of the program, which she described as a hands-on way to build reading comprehension skills. “This is really the way it should be.” The room was designed with both simple and complex clues, so students of different ages and learning abilities could succeed. Levine explained that in his made-up story about a middle-school student who breaks codes for the CIA, the children also learn about positive traits including friendship, loyalty and work ethic. Throughout the year, he will be working with students in several other elementary schools in the district.
