Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

Massapequa ninth graders learned about a local organization that helps people in need during a visit to the Island Harvest warehouse on Oct. 20. More than a dozen students from the Helping Hands Club at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus also got to do some volunteer work on the trip. Advisers Alyssa Levine and Nicole Reiss took 14 students to the warehouse in Melville.

They spent four hours at the facility, learning about Island Harvest’s mission and how it relies on donations and volunteers. Students gained insight into the many services the organization provides, such as providing household items and toiletries, in addition to food. Then it was time to get to work. The ninth grade volunteers made care packages of personal hygiene items

that will be distributed to people in need across Long Island. Each bag included body wash, shaving cream and sunscreen. Collectively, Ames students made 688 packages. “They worked really hard,” Ms. Reiss said. “They felt that they were part of something bigger. The students wanted more things to do and wished they could have stayed longer.” Ninth grader Ashley Miller

said this was the first time she had heard of Island Harvest and was pleased to learn that organizations like this are around to help people. Assisting others is exactly why she joined Helping Hands. “I enjoyed packing the items because it made me feel good to be helping people,” she said. Sofia Milowski said visiting the Island Harvest warehouse was a great

experience and it made her and her peers realize the value of giving back. “I wanted to join Helping Hands because it’s always good to care for people and help people through tough situations in life,” she said. “It’s good to help, because one small thing can make a huge difference for someone.” Helping Hands has several more charitable initiatives in the works. It is hosting

Ames Helping Hands Extends Its Reach Beyond Massapequa a winter coat drive through Nov. 9. Students and staff can place new and gently used coats in a donation box in the Ames lobby, which will be given to New York Cares. The student service organization will also hold its annual pajama and book drive during the holiday season for children at Head Start in Wantagh.

Estimates from the Department of Veterans Affairs indicate that there were around 19 million veterans in the United States in 2021. Veterans Day, observed each year on November 11, honors all those who served honorably in the U.S. military during both wartime and peacetime. Data from the VA indicates that, as of 2016, Gulf War veterans account for the largest share of all U.S. veterans. Roughly 7.8 million veterans served during the Gulf War. Vietnam veterans also make up a sizable percentage of U.S. military veterans, as VA estimates indicate there were approximately 5.9 million veterans who fought in the Vietnam War in 2021. Though veterans need not have served in wartime in order to be recognized and honored on Veterans Day, the vast majority of U.S. veterans served during wartime. According to the VA, 78 percent of veterans in 2021 had served during wartime.

The Nassau Coalition of Youth Services gathered for their annual legislative breakfast. The Board of Directors of YES Community Counseling Center joined with the Youth Services Provider Network of Nassau County to discuss the growing needs of Nassau County youth, especially given the increased rates of youth depression, substance use and mental health challenges within our communities. The need for additional funding to support the increasing requests for help was at the

forefront of the discussion. YES Executive Director, Adrienne LoPresti stated “It is incumbent upon us all to ensure that our children and families have comprehensive services and support available to assist them when they reach out for help.” She further added that “... funding for youth services has remained at the same levels for decades, which only further exacerbates a tenuous environment for our youth.” The Coalition Network of Providers expressed their on-going
