The Maurer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that has been for over serving the community 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction. Since their founding in 1995, they have reached almost 350,000 high school and college students, parents, coworkers and neighbors with lifesaving information on breast health, expanded their reach internationally, training their first breast health educator from outside the United States, annually educated over 200,000 people across the world on their website and trained breast health educators in local nursing programs, exponentially increasing their impact on Long Island. This October, The Maurer Foundation has schedueld 132 breast health programs, reaching 3,300 people with life-saving information on breast selfexams, breast cancer risk factors, risk reduction, myths, facts, mammogram guidelines and more! They are seeking a Program Development Intern as well as a Development and Social Media Intern. On Oct. 16 and 17, students in meteorology classes went outside to observe weather conditions and take measurements. Led by science teacher Nicholas Donohue, students had to record

the flag pole to observe wind conditions. They used the flag to determine wind direction and figured out estimated wind speed by looking at objects that were moving from the wind and
comparing it to a Beaufort Scale. Students were able to look up live weather data from Republic Airport in Farmingdale, just a few miles away, to verify their own readings.

A Message from the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce
Dear Friends, As I am preparing this month’s newsletter, I am eagerly awaiting the change of the seasons, which has apparently just begun. With the Fall upon us, that means the beginning of holiday planning and more special events. That being said, it’s very exciting to be able to update you on what’s new at our Chamber. Our first Multi-Chamber Networking Event was held at the Bristal with great attendance and enthusiasm. Susan Martin, who chairs the Networking Committee, promises to bring us more opportunities to meet and mingle with our business colleagues and develop new relationships to help us grow our businesses. A special thank you to the Bristal at Massapequa for making their beautiful facility available to our membership, and especially Executive Director Jennifer Amarante for all of her assistance in organizing this great event. In addition, our Businessperson of the Year, Karen Gawrych, was recognized this Friday at the Crest Hollow Country
Club. Our Board of Directors proudly joined with the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce to celebrate Karen’s many accomplishments - both in her work with Mary Kay and as a volunteer on our Executive Board. Congratulations again to Karen on this welldeserved honor. Our next General Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 25th at 12:00 Noon at the Corner Galley Restaurant. The Corner Galley is a regular lunchtime spot for many of our local residents, so we do hope that you will be able to take a break during the day to join us. At the meeting, we will be discussing our upcoming Food and Toy Drives. As you may know, each year our friends and neighbors support the Chamber’s efforts to provide food and toys for the children and families of our community. Your support of this effort helps us to brighten their holiday season in a way that has such lasting impact. If you are interested in displaying a food or a toy box in your business, please call Shelley in the Chamber office at 516.541.1443 and she will arrange to have the donations picked up and dropped off at our local pantries. Our hope is to brighten the holidays for those in need. Speaking of our Chamber office, we are excited to announce that effective November 1st, we will be re-locating our office to 675 Broadway. The office space in a beautiful newly
renovated building will be a wonderful change for our Chamber. A special thanks to our new landlord, Sharmine Persaud - The Law Firm of Persaud and Zeltmann, who helped us to make this much needed move possible. In an effort to keep you apprised of other important business news, I want to remind you all that the state’s requirement related to the development of a company sexual harassment policy goes into effect shortly. The NYS website has a template where you can modify the policy to fit your business. I wish you all a great and prosperous month filled with lots of treats and hopefully no tricks! The Greatest Show at Lockhart Juggling, plate spinning and stilt walking were just some of the skills that students learned at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District when the circus came to town. The highly anticipated week of circus arts instruction was held from October 15-19 in physical education classes. In addition, fifthgraders spent extra time practicing skills for a pair of performances. “Every child, kindergarten through fourth grade, can’t wait to get to fifth grade so they can be the performers,” physical education teacher
Joseph Catalanotto said. “They’re excited to be able to perform for their friends and family.” The fifth-graders showcased their new abilities during Friday afternoon assemblies for the Lockhart student body, and then during an evening show for family members in McKenna Elementary School’s large gymnasium. While the younger students got a taste of the different acts during their sessions, each fifth-grader picked one skill to practice, master and perform: Chinese yo-yo, devil sticks, juggling, plate spinning and stilt walking. They also learned clown routines by
dressing in costume and writing comedic skits. The circus arts program was supported by the PTA’s Arts in Education committee. Students worked with experience performers from O Town Circus Academy, who gave personalized instruction. “They make sure every child is successful at one of these skills,” Mr. Catalanotto said, adding that it was thrilling to watch them progress throughout the week and perform complicated routines. He added that the weeklong program shows students that with hard work and determination, they can achieve anything.
