In collaboration with the Lions Club International Foundation, the Long Island Lions Quest Initiative recently announced the awarding of a Core 4 grant of $133,000 to help Long Island schools train teachers and provide materials for the K-12 Lions Quest program, a proactive initiative to create safe, supportive and successful schools on Long Island. Through this grant, proactive schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties are set to create safer and more supportive schools through Lions Quest, which meets the new Dignity for All Students Act curriculum requirement. Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci hosted an information meeting at Farmingdale State College on October 9th during which legislators and school officials learned about the program.

Philanthropy Day 2013

Stony Brook University is one of six recipients of a $5 million grant from the Transforming Undergraduate Education in STEM program at the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop tools that will change the way STEM students are assessed. The five-year grant, which will help catalyze the national movement to better test and evaluate the knowledge, abilities, performance and competence of STEM students, is one of the largest science education grants ever awarded. “At large universities, the typical ways that student learning is measured is through multiple choice tests,” said Dr. Ross Nehm, associate professor of Ecology and Evolution and member of the Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CESAME) and Principal Investigator on the project. “But, while they are the easiest

for students to prepare for, multiple-choice assessments do not match the types of performances and skills that we expect them to be able to master in the real world. Because students tend to learn and study for the types of tests that they’re given, they aren’t well-prepared for the increasing global competition for skilled workers.” While many students may be able to access and know large amounts of information, they may nevertheless be limited in their ability to organize and express such understanding in a clear, logical and persuasive manner. Photographs & Still Frames By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am what I suppose you would classify as “slightly” obsessed with photography. Everywhere I travel, whether for the first time or the fiftieth, I am constantly on the lookout for interesting angles, landscapes, candid shots… anything that happens to catch my eye. There is something about preserving the moment that has always appealed to my sense of historical appreciation – because, after all, the second a moment has passed, it is, theoretically, history. This is not to say that every one of the thousands of photos in my digital archive would necessarily qualify as “art” or even as particularly significant to anyone but me. They are just part of the vast collection of snippets from my life, of those close to me, of the places I have been, the

events I have attended – all easily accessible whenever I, or anyone else, is in the mood for a little trip down memory lane. One would think, with such an interest in the art of photography, that I might invest in a “real” camera at some point, rather than relying solely on the somewhat questionable quality of my digital smartphone, portable and convenient as it is. And while, yes, an assortment of lenses and tools would certainly improve the technical quality, there is definitely something to be said for being able to instantly capture the scene before you. With the recent influx of social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram, there seems to be a newfound obsession with instantly sharing every photo taken, especially among those of the younger generation. While I can appreciate a good photo as much as the next person, there is

such a thing as overkill. Case in point: I recently traveled to Ireland over the summer on what was my first “real” trip – on a plane, overseas, to a land full of countless photo ops. I took what amounted (after many retakes and deletions) to about 800 photos over the course of eight days. Had I taken a cue from the masses out on Facebook, all 800 of those pictures would have been instantly uploaded the second my feet touched American soil. Instead, I managed to narrow it down to maybe a dozen of my favorites. I’m sure all my social media “friends” and “followers” thank me for that. Photography will always be something of a passion for me. And why not? Someday, all those seemingly meaningless photos will be quite significant. Better to capture those moments now.

IMPORTANT Changes To The STAR Tax Exemption Program! New legislation requires ALL homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department THIS year in order to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years. This is part of a new initiative to protect tax dollars from being lost to fraud. The New York State Department of Taxation & Finance will be mailing instructions to Long Island homeowners who currently receive the Basic STAR exemption between September 16 and October 4 on how to register, along with a STAR code that they will need to register.

Homeowners can register for the STAR exemption online. They will need to: • Provide a STAR code (New York State is mailing codes to all Basic STAR recipients (Codes can also be retrieved online). • Provide the names and social security numbers for all owners of the property and spouses. • Confirm the property is the primary residence of one of its owners (married couples with multiple residences may only claim one STAR exemption). • Confirm that the combined income of the owners and their spouses who reside at the property does not exceed $500,000. • Confirm that no resident owner received a residency-based tax benefit from another state.
