The Massapequa High School girls varsity swim team hosted its annual Swim for a Cure meet on September 28th, at Syosset, for Pediatric Cancer Month. The Lady Chiefs collected items such as coloring books,

crayons and small toys to be donated to the pediatric cancer unit at Cohens Children’s Medical Center. They also held a 50/50 raffle for breast cancer awareness, which will be go toward the Massapequa School District’s Dig Pink

Swimmers Dive Into Fundraiser initiative. The swimmers raised more than $400 and a table full of items during their Swim for a Cure endeavor with the help of their opponent and friends from Garden City Swim and Dive team.

Kyle Richards’ Hollywood Upbringing and Booming TV Career By Allison Kugel

Real Housewife of Beverly Hills, Paris Hilton and Nicky Hilton Rothschild’s aunt; Kyle Richards has emerged as a Hollywood force. She is the breakout star of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, now in its ninth season, and Executive Producer of the new hit television series, American Woman, loosely based on the colorful life of her late mother, Kathleen Richards. Allison Kugel: Your new television show, American Woman, is inspired by your mom’s life. What is the greatest lesson your mom taught you?

Kyle Richards: She would always tell me, “If you want something, put it out there and you’ll make it happen.” She would tell me that you have to plant the seeds. When you’re a kid you don’t really understand what that means. Now I realize that everything I was doing my whole life was planting the seeds for what I’m doing now. She told me I could do anything I wanted to if I set my mind to it, and to never take my eye off the ball. Allison Kugel: If she were still here, what do you think she would say about your new show, American Woman, and how she’s portrayed? Kyle Richards: I think she would be very excited and proud, because she knew this was something I wanted to do, and I made it happen. She would be so proud to see her daughter doing well and fulfilling her dreams. Allison Kugel: If you could go back in time, would you choose to be a child actor again? Kyle Richards: Absolutely. I had a

very positive experience as a child actor. I worked with incredible people. A lot of the things I did were in a very family-friendly environment. I got to travel and do exciting things I never would have been able to do if I were a regular child (laughs) living a normal life. I grew up in Bel Air, but obviously my friends weren’t actors. They went to school every day, they went to camp, and did all of those normal things. I didn’t get to do those things, but I was doing other interesting things and traveling. When we filmed Little House on the Prairie, we were filming out in Simi Valley and riding horses and playing in the streams and catching ducks. It was just like going to camp sometimes. Allison Kugel: You had an unconventional upbringing, as is reflected on this show. What kind of impact did your childhood experience have on what you looked for in a husband and family as an adult? Kyle Richards: I grew up in a house filled with women. My mom, my grandmother, my sisters, my mom’s friends… and my sister Kathy had these two best friends that basically lived at our house. It was like a big sorority house. There was a lot of fun in our house, but then I would go to my friends’ houses and I would see the dad coming home from work and the mom making dinner in the kitchen. I thought, “Oh, those are like the people on TV. Those are fake people.” But I always really admired that, and it was something that I always wanted to have. Allison Kugel: Did you have input into the casting of Alicia Silverstone, who plays the character inspired by your mom?

Kyle Richards: Absolutely. I was involved with every aspect of the show. When I originally met with Alicia, my thought was that the actress we cast had to be a natural redhead. My mom was a redhead and it was a big part of her personality. Alicia loved the script and I thought, “Okay, we’ll have a meeting,” because I love Alicia Silverstone! Who doesn’t love Alicia Silverstone? The second I met her, and I saw how inspired she was to dive into this role, or as Alicia describes it, “this juicy part,” I really felt she was the person to take on the challenge of portraying my mom. Allison Kugel: What was your motivation for signing onto The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in 2010? What did you hope would come from it?

Kyle Richards: [American Woman] was not the goal (laughs). I didn’t realize what the Housewives [franchise] really was when I started doing it. I didn’t understand the opportunities that would come my way. I was acting my whole life, and then I had pretty much stepped aside from that to raise my children. When The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills came up, I looked at it as just another gig. I didn’t know what it was like to do a reality television show, other than seeing my niece Paris [Hilton] do it. I thought, “This is great because it’s reality and my kids can be with me.” I had no game plan at all.

Kyle Richards: In American Woman, they show her working at The May Company, and with that part the writers took creative license. My mom was our manager growing up, because we were all acting in television. She was a single mom raising us. All of a sudden, she found herself in this big house with no husband. Even though we had this nice house in Bel Air, my mom was very strict. We had to make our own beds. When we got cars we were not allowed to go to the car wash, we each had to wash our own car. My kids now go and get their nails done. I wasn’t allowed to get my nails done. I did my own nails.

Allison Kugel: You’d been working in television since childhood, so it made sense to go back to what you knew.

Allison Kugel: I think that part is a generational thing, because I didn’t get my first manicure and pedicure until I was in college.

Kyle Richards: I’ve been doing television since before I could even read. American Woman happened through a fan. My friend came to me and said, “I have these fans of yours who would love to meet you. Would you mind doing lunch?” I agreed because he’s a very close friend of mine. They happened to be the producers of Shameless (on Showtime). At lunch they started asking me what my plans were for after Housewives. I told them I like to write, particularly about having an unconventional upbringing, and I began sharing some stories with them. Then I got a phone call that John Wells (American Woman’s Executive Producer) wanted to make my mom’s story into a television show.

Kyle Richards: Me either. A massage? Are you kidding me? I never had a massage until I was married.

Allison Kugel: What parts of Alicia Silverstone’s portrayal of your mom are accurate and which parts did

Allison Kugel: Do you find it a challenge to keep your kids grounded in Beverly Hills? Kyle Richards: It is a challenge, and the way I deal with that is through having open conversations. I don’t want to be a broken record with my kids because then they’ll stop listening, but I kind of am sometimes. My husband and I always talk about this. When we were first married we were in a very different position. My oldest would say, “When are we going to get a house?,” because we were in a condo. I would explain that we have to make money and save up, and we have to have an extra cushion in the bank. So she would say, “How many cushions do we need?” Allison Kugel: American Woman

takes place in the 1970s, just as the seeds of feminism were starting to take root. It seems that your mom was ahead of her time, in terms of being a feminist more than forty years ago. Kyle Richards: It’s funny you should say that, because my mom did not like the word “feminist.” It had such a negative connotation at the time. Back then, women weren’t supposed to be strong and outspoken. Nowadays it’s somewhat celebrated as empowering for women to be strong. I hope younger women, including my daughters, will see how far we have come and appreciate who they are and the power they have. In my mother’s generation, that was lost. Massapequa Resident Joins BOCES LIHSA Faculty Erik Chocianowski of Massapequa is not new to Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). Having served as a visiting lecturer at the school for the past three years, he now takes a full-time position on the faculty, bringing his educational and professional expertise to the students in the theater department. As a visiting lecturer, Mr. Chocianowski taught scenic design, an important element of technical theater. His students learned the basics of design, drawing, 3D modeling techniques and stage terminology. As a culmination to their studies, students helped to build full sized set pieces for the various productions at LIHSA. In his new position, Mr. Chocianowski will teach a variety of topics, from special effects makeup, to puppetry, to lighting mechanics and design.

“It’s amazing to be able to work with so many talented people and collaborate with professionals from diverse artistic backgrounds,” Mr. Chocianowski said of his experience at LIHSA. “The students here are so talented and bring so much passion to everything they do. Everyone is driven. They bring a lot of unique skills to the classroom.” Mr. Chocianowski brings an impressive professional background to his role as educator. He is the OwnerOperator of his original company Hatandstachery, which creates set designs and makes scenery for staged productions. He has served as a scenic carpenter for world-renowned Spaeth Design, creating holiday window displays for major retail outlets. Preceding his educational experience as visiting lecturer at LIHSA, Mr. Chocianowski served as faculty adviser of Roslyn High School’s Technical Theater program. In

this capacity he guided students in the creation of sets for the school’s various theater productions, including Little Shop of Horrors, Jesus Christ Superstar, The CrucibleandXanadu. “My goal is to help my students build self confidence and a sense of agency,” Mr. Chocianowski said of his current role as teacher. “I want to help them develop the skills they need to tackle any project that they come across, and to showcase their talents to professional companies within their chosen career fields.” Mr. Chocianowski is an active member of the National Art Education Association and the Educational Theatre Association. He holds a master’s degree from SUNY Empire State College, a bachelor’s degree from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and certification in art education from Queens College.

Conversations with Masters This week I’m turning my column over to some of the Masters I have been priviledged enough to interview. Below are a few eye-opening quotes gleaned from my past interviews. I cherish these conversations, and hope you find the below insights as valuable as I did: Dr. Deepak Chopra on the illusion of time “If you are in love, time does not exist. If you are having a good time, it flies. If you are on a deadline, you feel that you are running out of time. If you are bored or anxious, time takes forever. Time is how we measure our experience. In the deeper domains where there is unity consciousness, time [as we know it] doesn’t exist. Time is the movement of thought. It separates the observer from the observed; the seer from the scenery; the lover from the beloved… they’re all the same consciousness.” Ralph Nader on why he will never retire

“The concept of retirement started with the industrial revolution, the forty hour work week, and all of that. Primitive tribes don’t have a sense of retirement. Kidblog to sharpen their writing skills at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The online platform gives students the opportunity to develop their ideas and improve their writing abilities. In Annette Ready’s class, the young writers began work on their

Kidblog to describe their main characters. While the final product would be handwritten, students did much of the preliminary writing on their Chromebooks. Ms. Ready said that because the children have their own assigned Chromebooks, they will be blogging throughout

responding to a classroom lesson or sharing experiences in their lives. They can also access their blogs on their home computers and can read each other’s entries. The students are encouraged to leave kind comments for their classmates.

Amato-Smith, owner of Top Cuts hair salon in Bethpage, NY, is paying it forward after battling and beating Breast Cancer. Her salon’s annual fundraiser, Cut-A-Thon for Breast Cancer, provides funding for Long Island women who are currently battling Breast Cancer, providing a reprieve from some of their every day responsibilities so they can focus on getting well. New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) held a ground-breaking ceremony for its new state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility, located minutes from the ferry and Long Island Railroad in Port Jefferson Station, on October 10th, 2018. The modern facility will be the most advanced, patientfriendly cancer treatment center of its kind on Long Island. Commanding a footprint of 15,000 square feet, this unique facility was designed to treat the whole patient, not just their cancer. It offers everything they need to fight cancer, in one convenient location, and right in their own backyard. Dr. Jeffrey Vacirca, CEO of NYCBS, explains the vision behind the center. “Through 40 years of treating and actually listening to our cancer patients, we understand what they need and want in cancer care. Top quality medical treatment, of course, but also comprehensive services and emotional support services, and access to promising clinical trials. They also want a facility that is closer to home so they don’t have to travel when they’re sick. This is what NYCBS communitybased care is all about.

We’ve been providing our neighbors with these support services all along. but now we can do all of this—and much more— under one roof.” With all the amenities a NYCBS patient has come to expect-- like comfortable furniture, warm lighting, soft blankets and a kind, attentive staff for much needed emotional support—the new NYCBS center is designed to nurture and streamline patient flow so patients don’t have to wait. With the most cuttingedge medical technology and equipment, including the most advanced PET/CT Scans and MRI machines to provide superior imagery for diagnostic purposes, as well as medical and radiation oncology services, inhouse radiology and infusion services, the new NYCBS center addresses all of the patient’s medical needs in one building. To facilitate better patient outcomes, the NYCBS center will also offer a multi-faceted wellness program staffed by nurse educators, psychologists, and other experts, ready to provide nutritional, emotional, financial, psychological and spiritual guidance for patients. These support services are unique to

community-based cancer care and demonstrate NYCBS’s commitment to conquering cancer. The lab’s CLEP license will allow it to take and process outside specimens (blood, biopsies, etc.). With the new facility located next to the lab, cancer patients will receive their results in record time. The new facility will also feature the latest in clinical trials and immunotherapy. As a symbol of hope, NYCBS will be planting a tree to remain lit throughout the year in colors representing different cancers treated each month. Joining NYCBS to plant this tree will be patients, doctors, staff, Sheriff Errol Toulon, and local politicians Congressman Lee Zeldin and Town Supervisor Ed Romaine.
