Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced a partnership with NuHealth (Nassau University Medical Center) to provide free flu shots to residents aged 60+. The Town of Oyster Bay’s Free Flu Vaccination Program will

take place on Monday, November 2nd at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. The program will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and vaccinations will be administered on a first-come, first served basis. Supervisor Saladino

stated, “Thanks to a partnership with NuHealth, the influenza inoculations are being made available to senior citizens with no out-ofpocket expense. Health professionals recommend getting a seasonal influenza vaccination annually, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic,

it is more important than ever this year! By getting a vaccination, you can protect yourself, reduce the spread of respiratory illness to others and help limit the strain on our healthcare workers are they continue to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.” Dr. Anthony Boutin,

President/Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer for NuHealth, stated, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highly recommends getting your flu shot this fall not only to reduce your risk from flu but also to help conserve potentially scarce health care resources. Join us

on November 2nd as we administer these free flu shots to senior citizens in the Town of Oyster Bay.” According to healthcare professionals, people 65 years of age and older are at higher risk of developing health complications from the season flu.

Day 1 In The Books In keeping with a Massapequa School District tradition, the second day of school was actually the first day of school for kindergartners, who arrived at the six elementary school on the morning of Sept. 9 eager to learn and ready to make new friends. Many were guided by their older brothers and sisters who have “been there, done that,” while others became the first of their siblings to start school. Outside of the buildings were welcome signs and sidewalk chalk

messages. Teachers enthusiastically greeted the kindergartners, the future Massapequa High School Class of 2033. A school setting during the COVID-19 pandemic that seems unusual to older students may feel more normal to kindergartners who begin their 13-year school career wearing masks, sitting behind desk barriers and having classmates learning from home. There are numerous precautions in place to keep them healthy and safe throughout the school day including some socially

distant mask breaks. In addition to typical first day getting-to-knowyou activities, teachers reviewed the importance of these protocols. Kindergartners attended a one-hour orientation program on Sept. 8 in which they got to see their classrooms and meet their teachers to get them prepared for the first full day of school. When they arrived the following morning, either by bus, by car or on foot, it was if they already had “been there, done that.”

Fairfield Fifth Graders Test Their Knowledge Digitally Preparing for a test has never been so much fun for fifth graders in Christopher Kiernan’s classroom at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. He recently introduced students to Quizizz, an interactive gaming platform that creates engagement through competition. To introduce students to

the program, which they use on their Chromebooks, Mr. Kiernan created a “Two Truths and a Lie” game. Each student had to submit two truthful facts about him or herself and one untrue statement, which became the questions for the game. The children then were tested to see how well they knew their classmates. As they submitted their

answers, a leaderboard appeared on the Smartboard, and students enjoyed competing to see who earned the most points. Mr. Kiernan said that one of the advantages of Quizizz is that students can answer questions at their own pace. Moving forward, he said he will use the program to give students review questions for tests and quizzes.

To avoid such changes, make sure the seeds are not roasted for more than 20 minutes. Once they have been roasted, pumpkin seeds can be served as-is as a delicious snack. Whole Foods notes that seeds also can be sprinkled into mixed green salads. Pumpkin seeds can even be ground with fresh garlic, parsley and cilantro leaves and then mixed with olive oil and lemon juice to create a delicious salad dressing. Chopped pumpkin seeds also can be added to cereals. This Halloween, don’t forget to add a little nutrition to celebrations by roasting some pumpkin seeds.

Halloween is a unique day each year when people gather together for parties, parades and of course, trick-ortreating. October 31 is a day that most children eagerly await each year because it means an opportunity to don a costume and come home with bags full of sweet treats. This year Halloween figures to look different than it has in years past. Homes may have carved pumpkins on the doorstep and paper ghosts blowing on tree branches. And horror movies will no doubt dominate streaming service top 10 lists, but thanks to the COVID-19 virus, certain Halloween traditions may not be possible. Depending on regulations in your city or town, parties, trick-or-treating and school functions (if school is in

session) may be canceled or significantly modified. Since COVID-19 is so easily spread, health officials have long touted the need for social distancing. And while masks in public have long since become the norm, Halloween masks may not be sufficient. The coronavirus already has scared off some Halloween attractions. Universal Orlando, Disney World and Disneyland have canceled mainstream Halloween events for this year. Plus, a recent Harris poll on Halloween found that, of the 1,970 adults polled, nearly three out of four people have no plans to take their children trick-ortreating. So what is the public to do in the wake of the risks of going out for Halloween? • Maintain social

distancing if trick-ortreating is allowed. This could mean staggering times to go on the search for candy and avoiding homes where trick-or-treaters have already lined up. • Consider small gatherings that enable youngsters to exchange candy with a limited group of friends or neighbors. • Head to the mall or nearby stores in costume and get candy from retailers where it may be easier to maintain distance. • Wear your mask or special face coverings when trick-or-treating. Consider building a costume around the masks so it fits with the Halloween theme. • Wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer when water and soap is unavailable. Limit the number of houses you visit to reduce your risk of infection. • Ask family or friends to send digital treats, such as gift cards or certificates. Many restaurants may offer voucher programs for coupons for free ice creams at their locations, and while these may not be traditional Halloween goodies, ice cream is still sure to please youngsters. • Consider car parades instead of traditional trickor-treating. Despite the COVID-19 virus, Halloween enthusiasts can find ways to be safe and have fun this year.
