When a Massapequa Chief soccer player shared her story with other fall athletes about her cousin who was suffering from leukemia, it didn’t take much convincing for them to do something to help. The teams listened to Emily Taylor’s idea to support Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September and they ran with it, raising nearly $1500 for the Children’s Cancer Center at Winthrop University Hospital. Each team dedicated a game to the cause and athletes wore an article of gold clothing, such as socks or headbands, as a symbol of awareness. Gold is the official color of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Each team also created a “Night on the Town” themed basket for the

families of children at the center so that they can “get away” from the challenges they are going through. The baskets were filled with movie and restaurant coupons, games, Chief apparel, and letters and cards from players expressing their concern and support. “Seeing everyone get involved really helped push through the cause,” Emily said. “The Chiefs’ coming together really made it happen.” Brian Rath, varsity football assistant coach and physical education teacher at Berner Middle School who helped Emily coordinate the effort, said, “This is a special event because it enabled our athletes to gain perspective on how fortunate they are and how important it is to

raise awareness for this great cause.” District administrators congratulated the students and expressed how impressed they were by their efforts to make the campaign a success. “This is a great example of community spirit,” said Massapequa High School Principal Dr. Barbara Williams. “These athletes exhibited exceptional character.” “I am so proud of how the booster clubs, coaches, and student athletes once again came through to support a worthy cause,” said John Piropato, director of health, physical education and athletics. “This is another great example of their selflessness and dedication to making a difference in the lives of others.”

THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE

I am alarmed by the large number of kids in my school who, in recent days, have claimed that America should keep to itself and out of world affairs. Some have even gone as far as to say that we should be completely isolationist. I have heard this argued in debates at the debate club I helped start at my school, and in my Ethics class. I consider myself to be well-versed in American history so, for a moment, let’s look back to times when America didn’t lead in the world: 6 million Jews died in German concentration camps, Soviets invaded Afghanistan, Americans were taken hostage and held for over a year in Iran, 800,000 Rwandans were killed

over a 100 day period, 350,000 Bosnians were killed in the bloody genocidal regime of Slobodan Milosevic, and now we have ISIS, which has formed as a result of decreased U.S. military presence in Iraq. Students reason this way because they claim America is too aggressive, arrogant and has caused more harm than good, of course drawing all of their evidence off the Iraq War. Though some of this may be true, millions have died when we don’t take a leadership role in the world. That’s not being an arrogant American - that’s the truth. But can the students really be blamed? In classrooms, students are fed this information in AP U.S.

History courses that have a curriculum that is heavily liberally biased and cannot be changed. Though it has reformed lately, it has claimed that we fulfilled manifest destiny to flex our “culturally superior” muscle and that the end of the Cold War should be mainly attributed to Mikhail Gorbachev, not to Ronald Reagan, whose arms race and build-up ultimately caused the Soviet Union to go broke. So there it is - the question is answered, students can’t be blamed. Unless they do an extensive amount of studies on their own time, they will not realize that if America doesn’t lead, the world will fall apart.

It’s been awhile since I’ve thrown together one of my random, rambling columns, touching on this, that and the other thing. Here goes… Baseball in October, that annual celebration of excellence that us Yankees fans have been fortunate to experience, well, annually for the most part. Congratulations to our New York neighbors, the Mets, for holding it together just long enough to make their longsuffering fans believe. Let’s hope the ride continues into the next round; but, either way, a proud showing. Football in October, well, that’s a different story entirely. The season is still

less than halfway over, and up until just a few weeks ago, tailgating could have been comfortably enjoyed in t-shirts and shorts. But no more. Break out the sweaters and scarves, boots and gloves – it’s gonna be a chilly few months ahead. Speaking of, have you made your Christmas shopping lists yet? What are you waiting for? At this rate, the bathing suits for next summer will be out on the racks in a matter of weeks. Forget Autumn – holiday season is upon us, with various countdowns marking the minutes until Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. {For those inquiring readers, Buddy the Betta, who just celebrated his

eight-month birthday, is eagerly looking forward to his very first holiday season. Perhaps I’ll decorate his tiny plant and string some lights on his bowl. He’s still patiently awaiting his sixmonth birthday shopping spree – something about wanting a “mini-castle” to sleep in. He’s also highly offended that no one noticed his addition to our staff box several weeks ago and is refusing to write another guest column, in protest.} Me, I’m looking forward to my own fall shopping spree. There’s something about the change of seasons and the transition of weather that calls for some new apparel, don’t you think? If only I had room to stuff one more thing in my closet…

Nine Massapequa High School student musicians were selected to perform in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All-State Winter Conference in Rochester, New York, December 4th7th. Massapequa is one of only five Nassau County districts selected to send nine or more students to the All-State concerts. “The number of students that are consistently chosen for this festival reflects the quality of our music program in Massapequa as well as the commitment, dedication and talent of

our hardworking students and their supportive parents,” said Dr. David Gaines, Massapequa School District’s curriculum associate for music, K-12. “We are delighted that they will represent our district at the state level.” The All-State students, their instrument or voice type, and the ensemble in which they will perform are: Camryn Bonamassa, Alto II, Women’s Chorus; Courtney Conkling, Piccolo, Symphonic Band; MacKenzie Conkling, Double Bass, Symphonic Orchestra; Brian Ford,

Tenor II, Mixed Chorus; Frank Sacino, Tenor I, Mixed Chorus; Christina Signoretti, BbClarinet, Symphonic Band; Kevin Stallone, Tenor I, Mixed Chorus; Brandon Vaglio, Tuba, Wind Ensemble; Luciana Vernola, Alto I, Women’s Chorus. The NYSSMA All-State process begins with a music educator, a student and an accompanist spending countless hours preparing for a NYSSMA Level VI solo. More than 6,500 students auditioned for this honor and about 890 were selected.

Going Pink

The staff and doctors at all three of Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics locations have decided to go pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. By buying pink products such as gloves, gowns and other disposable items through Henry Schein’s “Think Pink, Practice Pink” program, a portion of

sales from these products are donated to cancerrelated organizations through the Henry Schein Cares Foundation. This organization focuses on breast cancer, and also promotes increased access to care while globally supporting a broader scope of cancer-related causes, including pediatric and oral cancers.

Sadly, many of the office’s family members, staff and patients’ parents have been affected by breast cancer, and Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental is happy to raise money and awareness for this great cause. This year’s “Henry Schein Think Pink, Practice Pink” program supports several local hospitals and national breast cancer research.

Massapequa High School senior and Science Research student Joseph Boroda has been granted the opportunity to work in Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory through the selective “Partners for the Future” program. He was one of 14 students that were chosen to participate in the program. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a private, non-profit institution with research programs focusing on cancer, neuroscience, plant genetics, genomics and quantitative biology, and is a world-renowned institution that played

a central role in the development of molecular genetics and molecular biology. Through the selective “Partners for the Future” program at the laboratory, students have the chance to apply to work in the laboratory under the guidance and supervision of a mentor. Since June of this year, Joseph has been performing lung cancer research on the expression of the P53 gene and its role in tumor suppression in Dr. Raffaella Sordella’s Lab under the supervision of science researcher Dr. Nitin Shirole. He will continue his research

throughout the school year and will present his findings at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair in February 2016. “Joseph is a dedicated and diligent science research student,” said Lisa Caputo, the district’s curriculum associate for science, K-12. “We are extremely proud that he has earned a spot in the highly selective ‘Partners for the Future’ program and has the opportunity to conduct his research under the watchful eyes of some of the most respected scientists in our area.”

Pre-School Program Massapequa High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department, in conjunction with its Child Study course, will once again sponsor a Preschool Program for district residents. High School students enrolled in the Child Study course have successfully completed the Parenting and Child Development course and are now ready for a hands-on approach to learning. The students will plan, prepare, and implement interdisciplinary activities within a thematic unit for the preschool students. Preschool will begin around March 10th, 2016 and continue for approximately 11 weeks to “graduation.” There are two sessions – Tuesdays and Thursdays or Wednesdays and Fridays, each from 9:55 a.m. – 12 p.m. Children must attend

both days of the session chosen. A donation of $60 per child to help defray expenses is encouraged.
