The Massapequa School District is encouraging creativity and critical thinking with the opening of Makerspace rooms in the six elementary schools. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held with technology staff, building administrators and students during the last week of September. Students in fourth through sixth grade can participate in Makerspace activities during their lunch and recess periods. There are those who contend that things were far simpler before technology invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.

For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished ﬂip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest

the money into a two-forone deal – a state-of-the-art phone coupled with a camera that earned the praises of numerous professional photographers. And so I took the plunge. And it was worth it. All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

Town of Oyster Bay residents who are interested in enrolling their children in a PreSchool Program are invited to attend an open house at one of the Town’s two pre-schools, located in Woodbury at the Syosset-Woodbury Community Park and in Massapequa at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson announced. Parents are welcome to visit our facilities and learn more about this popular program. The Pre-School Program is for children between the ages of three and four years old. The Town will host two open houses beginning with the SyossetWoodbury Community Park (located on 7800 Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury) on Monday, November 14th, from 6 to 9 p.m. The second open house will be held in the pre-school located in Marjorie R. Heart Screenings for Athletes The Massapequa School District will host a free youth heart screening for local athletes on Saturday, October 29th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Alfred G. Berner Middle School, 50 Carman Mill Road. Heart Screen New York is being offered by the Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation and the Dominic A. Murray 21 Memorial Foundation.

The screening is open to students on Massapequa varsity and junior varsity athletic teams. All athletes are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity, as cardiac screenings are an effective way to detect many preexisting and potentially serious disorders. Cardiologists from area hospitals will be offering their services at

the screening, which will consist of a heart health survey, heart sounds physical, blood pressure test, ECG electrical test and echocardiogram. This simple, noninvasive test takes about a half hour. Students will consult with a cardiologist after the test is complete. “We are honored to have been contacted by Heart Screen New York

Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District has launched a new character education program this year, which began with an exciting pep rally. In celebrating the school’s mascot, the lion, Principal Stephen Scarallo and Assistant Principal Ryan Aliperti spoke about pride with the entire student body. The Above and Beyond Character Education Initiative is a product of Lockhart’s new Pride Committee,

made up of teachers and support staff. Their goal is to highlight students who surpass typical expectations and find ways to make positive differences in the school community. If a staff member sees a student going above and beyond, they are asked to share the information with Mr. Scarallo or Ms. Aliperti. The first monthly winner, sixth-grader Aidan Cassara, was honored at the pep rally. He was recognized in front of his peers for organizing an

activity at recess that was inclusive of all students looking to play. October’s theme is responsibility. Each month the Pride Committee will focus on a different trait and look to honor students who exemplify that characteristic. “We look forward to sharing all of the ways the Lockhart Lions show their pride,” Mr. Scarallo said. “We are always looking for ways to promote this effort and recognize and reward students.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto is happy to announce that lottery applications for tickets to the Town’s annual free Holiday Concerts, are now available. The Town’s Annual Holiday Concerts, now in its 33rd year will be held on Monday, December 5th, Tuesday, December 6th, Wednesday, December 7th, at 7:30 p.m. and an afternoon matinee also on Wednesday, December 7th, at 2 p.m. “As always, this much anticipated event will be held at the Tilles Center on the Long Island University-C.W. Post campus located at 720 Northern Boulevard, Brookville. It will be a wonderful holiday experience for all to enjoy,” Supervisor Venditto said. Due to the Holiday Concert’s overwhelming popularity, the Town will once again distribute a Holiday Concert ticket lottery. This ticket lottery

is a fair and impartial system that has been very successful in the past in providing everyone with an equal chance of securing a ticket. To enter the lottery, residents need only pick up an application, or print out a copy from the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com, fill it out and return it to the address on the application. Once received, the applicant’s name will be placed into the lottery, from which winners will be selected at random. Selected applicants will receive tickets to either their first, second, third or fourth choice of performance depending on availability. All postcards must be received no later than Friday, October 28th. at 4:45 p.m. Applications for the Holiday Concerts Ticket Lottery can be placed in the drop off at the following locations: • Oyster Bay Town Hall

North, Town Clerk’s Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay. • Oyster Bay Town Hall South, Parks Department (1st Floor), Department of Community & Youth Services (2nd Floor), 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa. Supervisor Venditto indicated that those on the Town concert mailing list have already received an application in the mail. Simply fill out the detachable postcard at the bottom, affix a stamp on the reverse side and drop it in the mail. If selected, there is a limit of two tickets per household. Supervisor Venditto added that all lottery ticket winners will receive their tickets in the mail by Friday, November 18th. Kindergarten students at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District have recently been learning about colors.

Each day over two weeks, they were asked to wear a specifc color, beginning with red and working their way through the hues of the rainbow.

They also created projects corresponding to those colors, such as drawing pictures of the sun when they celebrated yellow.

Concert Lottery Applications

Mass Quantity Erasers, glue sticks, pencils and boxes of crayons were among the items that became part of a scientific study in Keith Lambert’s sixth-grade classroom at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on October 11th. As part of a lesson that incorporated both science and math, students learned

about mass and matter. Each group was tasked with finding the mass of 10 ordinary objects found in a classroom. Their tools were balance scales and gram weights, which included metal weights in various increments and one-gram colored blocks. After placing an object on one side of the scale,

the students had to add or subtract weights until both sides were even, then record their findings. Lambert said the purpose of the project was to teach them about the difference between mass and weight, and how to collect and organize data.

Nature Comes Alive Expanding their learning environment beyond four walls, a group of Massapequa High School students recently turned nature into their classroom. The Advanced Placement Environmental Science class visited the Massapequa Preserve on September 30th, spending several hours participating in a hands-on study of their local ecosystem

through the Brookhaven National Laboratory’s “A Day in the Life” program. Representatives from Brookhaven, the Central Pine Barrens Commission and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation were on hand to assist the students. Many of the juniors and seniors donned waterproof pants as they stepped into Massapequa Creek to

collect water samples and dirt, or cast large fishing nets. They studied water chemistry, recording data such as oxygen levels and temperature. As they pulled in the nets, they got a feel for its plant and animal life. The group documented the types of fish that call the stream home before setting them free. “I like that it’s outside of the classroom and it’s

hands on, so you can actually see stuff,” senior Isabelle Frawley said of the experience. Hundreds of students from high schools across Long Island took part in the program to analyze various bodies of water. Through this “citizen science” approach, the data collected by students will be maintained and shared by Brookhaven. Teacher Thomas Dempsey said

that this was Massapequa High School’s first time participating in the program, and his students will return every fall to collect new information and note changes from year to year. His class also raises trout, which are released into the creek. “It’s unique on Long Island to have this,” Mr. Dempsey said of Brookhaven’s program. “It gives them a lot of real-life

exposure to how science is done and it puts them in touch with professionals in the field.” Mr. Dempsey said that the data collected by his students would also be used for a class research project later in the year. In the spring, his students will get together with the other high schools that participated.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites residents and their families to the Town of Oyster Bay’s eighth annual Family Fall & Halloween Festival, which will be held on Saturday, October 22nd, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, located at 451 Unqua Road, Massapequa. “Once again, this annual free event invites residents to come out and celebrate the arrival of fall and Halloween with activities that are fun for children and adults alike,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The Family Fall & Halloween Festival will feature a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch for children to pick out their own pumpkin, Halloween crafts, a hay maze, bouncies, games, photo opportunities and refreshments. Costumes for those attending are encouraged and residents can bring their already carved pumpkins to be judged in this year’s Carved Pumpkin Contest.” The Supervisor noted that this event will be held rain or shine. The Family Fall & Halloween Festival is sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services.
