Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announces that the Town, in partnership with the New York Rangers, will host a special “Try Hockey for Free Program” on Sunday, October 22nd, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, at its state-ofthe-art Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located in Bethpage Community Park, 1000 Stewart Avenue. The event allows youngsters a unique opportunity to sample the sport of ice hockey. Four morning sessions will be available. Harry “Have you ever really had a teacher? One who saw you as a raw but precious thing, a jewel that, with wisdom, could be polished to a proud shine?” ~ Mitch Albom Last week, I was saddened to learn of the passing of a most cherished teacher, mentor and friend, Mr. Elsesser - “Harry” as he signed the yearly Christmas cards we exchanged. They say that some people leave footprints on your heart… this was most certainly true of the man who took me under his wing way back in 4th grade, and helped me to soar to new heights I never thought possible. Up to that point, I had been a fairly good student, conscientious enough in the academic department, but lacking a bit of the “plays well with others” skills that tend to come with time. Seeing this unfulfilled potential, Mr. Elsesser made it his mission to ensure that I would flourish under his watchful eye.

His class was one of those that you find yourself reflecting upon from time to time with a smile, recalling anecdotes and amusing instances, such as when he would entertain us with stories of his travels - to Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Japan, and beyond. Occasionally, there would be touches of Swahili thrown into the vocabulary lesson for good measure. As I entered fifth grade a better all-around student and person, Mr. E. decided to retire after 30 years of teaching in the Lindenhurst school district. Saddened to see him go, and promising to keep in touch, my mother - who had also been a student in the district when Mr. Elsesser began his tenure there started a yearly correspondence, exchanging Christmas cards and keeping each other updated on the happenings in our respective lives. Years later, I took over this tradition and began sending my own correspondence, filling Mr.

How proud he was to learn that I was utilizing my love of writing and had become a weekly columnist for my old hometown paper. Often, he would call my desk at the office, greeting me with, Is this Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, the reporter?? We would chat about how work was going, the family, had I seen any of my old classmates lately, what I had for lunch… and always, without fail, as we were getting ready to hang up, he would say, Send hugs and kisses to your parents, and of course to you too. What a wonderful man, and what a treasured friendship, one sustained for over a quarter of a century. How lucky I was that our paths crossed in life, and how blessed I am to have so many fond memories to reflect upon, and remember with a smile.

Massapequa High School has received one of the most prestigious distinctions in education, as it has been named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. The announcement was made on September 28th and Massapequa was one of 342 schools in the nation to receive the honor. It was nominated last year and was chosen as an Exemplary High Performing School following an extensive application and review process. “The honor both validated the positive, empowering work our students and educators demonstrate each day,” said Principal Patrick DiClemente. “We appreciate the acknowledgement of the positive, safe, dynamic culture of our school, our students’ outstanding academic performance and graduation rate, our social awareness and servicelearning efforts, the diligent professional work of all of our staff, and the supportive contributions and investment of our families and the entire community.” Massapequa High School, with an enrollment of approximately 1,700

students in 10th through 12th grades, has an extensive academic program in which students have opportunities to challenge themselves with higher-level coursework and explore their passions through a vast array of electives. The school offers more than two dozen Advanced Placement courses, six world languages, robotics and engineering courses, science research, vocal and instrumental musical ensembles and much more. In the Class of 2017, 98 percent of seniors earned a Regents Diploma or higher and 68.5 percent earned a Regents Diploma with Advanced Distinction. The most recent graduates are attending 147 colleges across 27 states including prestigious institutions such as Cornell University, New York University, Penn State, Syracuse University and the U.S. Military Academy. In 2016, Massapequa High School was named to the U.S. News and World Report’s list of Top 500 Public High Schools and Newsweek’s list of America’s Top High Schools. It also received a School of Distinction Award from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association for its

high percentage of scholar athletes, and has been named a New York State Reward School for the past four years. The high school is the second school in the district to be designated as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. East Lake Elementary received the honor in 2005. Now in its 35th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed recognition on more than 8,500 schools. On November 6th-7th, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and the Department of Education will celebrate with these honorees at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. A local celebration is being planned for October 27th at the high school. “The Blue Ribbon award should be shared by all in the Massapequa School District, as the success of our high school students can be attributed to the fine education they receive from the moment they enter our outstanding public schools,” said Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis. “This honor is just further proof that we have exemplary programs, talented and dedicated educators, and students who strive to be the best.”

A webcam was set up on each end and video displayed through the Smart Board. The teachers took turns reading one of the 2017 Global Read Aloud choices, “Whoever You Are” by Mem Fox. It is a book

After the reading, students went on their Chromebooks and shared their thoughts on the book, responding to the questions “What did you notice?” and “What do you wonder?” Through Padlet, they participated in a digital discussion by responding to each other’s posts.

Enjoying the Outdoors Fifth-graders in Maggie Rago’s class at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District know how to stay fit. They won additional time at recess by having the highest participation during Walk to School Day. The school, in conjunction with the PTA’s Health and Wellness Council, sponsored the event on October 4th, encouraging students to walk or ride their bicycles to school that morning. It

was part of a nationwide initiative organized by the National Center for Safe Routes to School. “It’s good to walk to school because it’s great exercise and you can get fresh air,” said fifth-grader Brendan Ciarlo. To encourage students to participate, the event featured a nature scavenger hunt, in which they had to find common items in the neighborhood such as birds, flowers, two similar rocks and Y-shaped

twigs. Fifth-grade Nicholas Augello said he was able to find all 20 items on the list. As their reward, Ms. Rago’s students had an additional 15 minutes of recess on October 11th, with the back field all to themselves. Children played soccer and enjoyed the playground equipment.
