Runners can register in two different ways the competitive “Fast Food” group or the noncompetitive “All You Can Eat” group. Those who do not wish to run have the option of registering to become a zombie! Each zombie will be transformed in the “Mob Tent” the morning of the event. Zombies have the option of registering as a “Hunter” who can chase runners for a short distance or a “Crawler” who can stumble, walk or shuffle after their prey to try and steal their flags. Tournament A Success

I recently adopted two pet goldfish. And by adopted, I mean spent $5 on 30 chances to win one at a carnival, and spent 17¢ on the other at a local pet store. Add to that the expense of a fishbowl, pretty neon-colored gravel, a fun plant for the two of them to dart behind whenever I’m within a 5 mile radius, the all-important goldfish food which they don’t appear to even notice floating overhead, and a scrubbing brush and net for the weekly cleaning process and maintenance. All that, with the hope that these two finned friends

will make it through the week, maybe even a month or two. My record so far is one whole year, upon which milestone my beta fish promptly croaked. I suppose the birthday celebration was too much for him. So far, as of this writing, five days and going strong. Not bad. Of course, I realize goldfish aren’t the most sociable of pets to have, but these two – whom I named Harvey and Harry – are beyond standoffish. I turn the light on, they swim away; I sprinkle a few food flakes in their bowl, they’re nowhere to be found. I walk away, turn the light out and – viola – there they are, faces pressed against the glass.

I have visions of the conversation that must go on between them when I’m not in the room: When is the human coming back? Why does she bother us? Did you eat today? I wish we had more trees to hide behind. Yes, I know – it’s silly. But they are home alone together all day; there must be some form of socialization between them, no? At any rate, I can feel satisfied that I rescued two goldfish, one from the madness of the carnival setting, the other from the schools of fellow fish in the aquarium. Even if they do prefer to cram themselves into a corner by themselves.

Nassau BOCES employees were recently awarded grants totaling more than $31,023 through the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting initiatives beyond the scope of the agency’s budget. These awards have helped to purchase iPads and Apple TVs for instructional and learning use, develop a scholarship fund for students with disabilities and provide professional artists to teach students at Long Island High School for the Arts are just a few of the programs funded this year. “I am honored and proud to win” said Nassau BOCES Jerusalem Avenue teacher Dina Bellucci who will

use the grant to purchase Dance, Dance Revolution. “This program will be used to promote fun, fitness and teambuilding skills for the students,” continued Ms. Bellucci. Children’s Readiness Center teacher Ellen Weiss purchased four large, adaptive bicycles for students ages five to nine to promote good health and muscle coordination. “You can see the students learning as they pedal,” said Ms. Weiss. The Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation raises funds through events such as its annual gala recognizing honorees of the Nassau BOCES Education Partner awards program. Now in its tenth year, the awards

program honors people and organizations that share Nassau BOCES’ commitment to public education. “Over the years we have supported a lot of highly exciting projects,” said Catherine Pucciarelli, Foundation Chairperson. “More than 150 grants totaling almost a quarter of a million dollars have been awarded since the inception of this program in 2007.” Grant-funded teaching innovation is just one way the agency fulfills its goal to ensure student success. Nassau BOCES will continue to set the standard for high-quality programs and services that enable all students to reach their full potential.
