Blank Page By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The bane of every writer’s existence. That infinite white space stretching before you, silently mocking its would-be-author’s lack of inspiration. And yet, there is always that potential that the following few keystrokes just might be the beginning of the next great American novel. Or not. Perhaps another day, on another page… I have always been one of those writers who wakes up with a thought, the makings of an entire essay, in fact, and then helplessly allows it to fade into the
oblivion of that dreamlike state in which we often begin our day. And, just like that, it’s gone, a mere trace of a concept that could have been. If only I had the good sense to jot down these fleeting thoughts. Instead, I sit here blank, staring at aforementioned blank page, feeling a sort of camaraderie with it. What shall we accomplish today? Do I sense a metaphor here, a comparison to each brand new day we are afforded, that 24hour stretch of limitless possibilities for adventure and accomplishment? Too easy. And yet, clearly not
simple enough for the average individual to take advantage of, yet another peculiarity of mankind. So many opportunities … so many fresh starts… so many blank pages…. Who’s to say when the moment will be seized, a la Dead Poets Society’s “carpe diem” mantra? Well, that’s a simple enough question. You. You are to say. I am to say. We are to say. The next time you are presented with a blank page, grab a pen and start writing. Or at least have the good sense to keep a notepad handy when you wake up.

The Knights of Columbus, Lady of the Island Council, together with the Village of Massapequa Park, will sponsor the annual Halloween Costume Parade on Sunday, October 25th, in Brady Park. Registration for the parade will begin at 12:00 p.m. and the parade and judging will kick off at 1:00 p.m. Costumes will be judged on creativity, originality and execution. Prizes will be awarded in four age groups: (1) under one year old; (2) one to three years old; (3) four to six years old; and (4) seven to nine years old. There will be a Grand Prize for the best overall costume. Hot dogs, soda and candy will be served to all participants. Dress up and come to enjoy the day.

advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is seven weeks in length with the exception of Thursday and Friday classes which are prorated for six weeks. All classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. The rink will be closed on Thanksgiving (November 26th) and no classes will be offered on November 27th. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are
registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for the next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters. “The Rinx Skating School staff is consists of experienced and qualified professionals, governed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association. This team of professionals places a major focus on educating the fundamentals of ice skating but most

Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this winter by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Michele M. Concert Ticket Lottery Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that applications for the lottery to distribute tickets to the Town’s annual free Holiday Concerts are now available. “Now in its thirtysecond year, the Town’s annual Holiday Concerts have been one of the most beloved and wellattended musical events the Town sponsors,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “By popular demand, the Holiday Concerts include three evening performances, and a Wednesday afternoon matinee. The high rate of demand has led to the creation of a Holiday Concert ticket lottery, a fair and impartial system that has been very successful in the past. Residents need only pick up an application, or print out a copy from the Town’s Web site, www. oysterbaytown.com, fill it out and return it to the
address on the application. All postcards must be received by October 30th, at 4:45 p.m. Once received, the applicant’s name will be placed into the lottery, from which winners will be selected at random.” Applications for the Holiday Concerts Ticket Lottery can be placed in the drop off at the following locations: • Oyster Bay Town Hall North, Town Clerk’s Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay. • Oyster Bay Town Hall South, Parks Department (1st Floor), Department of Community & Youth Services (2nd Floor), 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa. Post Campus will, once again, feature the incomparable Concert Pops of Long Island under the direction of Dean Karahalis and other talented musical performers.
Student Spotlight THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI: SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS BY: JORDAN CIANCIULLI, SENIOR, ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL
As a high school senior, there is no issue more relevant to me than picking a college. Over the past few years, I’ve wrestled with the idea of choosing the right school for me. After watching my brother make his decision, and then regret it during his freshman year, I’ve realized that this is a very important choice. My brother eventually transferred to the University of Miami, and hasn’t stopped talking about it since. He loves it, and after visiting, I fell in love too. The campus is beautiful, the academic reputation is unmatched and the Toppel Career Center is an invaluable resource which I hope to take advantage of.
I can see myself at The U. This is why I tried really hard to make myself stand out as an applicant. Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions, was happy to answer my questions about applying, and calm my anxiety. He informed us that, even though my grades and standardized test scores are pretty competitive, the holistic admissions process puts an emphasis on the applicant as a whole. With any luck, I’ll be able to put this advice to good use. After touring many competitive schools and narrowing my options, the University of Miami kept floating to the top of the
pile. I plan on touring the University of Miami again this weekend, just to further my desired transition into a Miami Hurricane. I’ve picked my institution of higher education, and now I can only hope that they pick me. I’m excited about the possibility of spending the next two years alongside my brother at one of the best colleges in the country, and I’m really looking forward to spending the next four years at my dream school. My past has shaped me in to the person I am today, but the University of Miami will make me the man I hope to become in the future.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia invites residents to submit their photos for consideration for use in a Town publication. “Publications such as the 2015 Summer Guide or Town Calendar showcase some of the many great photos submitted by our residents,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “As the Town utilizes resident-submitted photos throughout the year for various publications, including the Town’s website, residents are invited to submit pictures for consideration all year long. “The fall season brings about many great opportunities for taking photos; or you could submit some of your summer shots depicting any people, places, community events and scenery throughout the Town of Oyster Bay for use in upcoming Town publications,” the Councilwoman said.
Councilwoman Alesia went on to say that photos must be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but professionally developed photos, not inkjet printouts, may also be submitted. The smell of fall is in the air and Halloween is right around the corner, leaving thrill-seekers tingling in anticipation for the 27th annual Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Spooky Walk, hosted by the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws. Visitors will be chilled to the bones with this horrifying event, as they encounter surprises around every corner. This year’s Spooky Walk is sponsored by Capitol One Bank and will take place on October 16th-17th and 23rd-24th at Camp PaQua-Tuck from 7 to 9 p.m. The entire Spooky Walk trail takes 45 minutes to complete, making it the longest-lasting haunted walk on Long Island. This year’s theme features pirates and a haunted mansion. The trails takes guests through four buildings around the campgrounds, and on a walk through the woods and along Kaler’s Pond, where the angry ghosts of double-crossed pirates are rumored to live. A bypass route is available for guests who wish to exit before the end. There will also be a variety of refreshments at the event, including hamburgers, hot dogs, roasted corn, candy apples and hot pretzels. LITTLE LEAGUE AWARDS - The Massapequa Coast Little League Award Ceremony for the Massapequa Coast AA Pirates was recently held at Massapequa Village Hall. This Award Ceremony celebrated the athletic achievements the Massapequa Coast AA Pirates earned by coming together and working as a team.
CANCER WALK SUPPORT - The Long Island League to Abolish Cancer (L.I.L.A.C.) is a volunteer organization that originated in 1967 by ten women who were committed to devoting themselves to funding cancer research projects in the New York metropolitan area. Over the years it has grown to over 150 dedicated members. More than 95% of the money that is raised is donated directly in the form of research grants to purchase specific pieces of lab equipment. The League held their Cancer Walk this year on September 27th at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa.
AUTISM WALK HELD - The Town of Oyster Bay’s 8th Annual Autism Walk was recently held at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa. The Town’s walk has helped spread the word about autism and helps those afflicted with the condition. The event benefits the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism, a dedicated facility that offers families comprehensive assessments, family support and updated information on autism research while also building awareness.
CHALLENGER BASEBALL JAMBOREE - The Town of Oyster Bay recently hosted the 2015 Challenger Baseball Jamboree at John J. Burns Park. Established in 1989, this special event is a Little League-sanctioned program that gives physically and mentally challenged children the opportunity to play baseball. Adaptations are made to accommodate boys and girls with physical and mental challenges while “buddies” will encourage players to bat and make the plays themselves, but will also assist when necessary.
NETWORKING GROUP - A Massapequa Networking Group was recently held at Village Hall in Massapequa.
