They worked in teams, each tackling a specific task. During their one-week experience, their Spanish skills grew considerably, they said, from oneword sentences, to actual conversations as they recalled what they learned in the classroom. “It’s a whole different experience when you have to rely on using your Spanish,” said Julianna Hartmann. “When you see how you can apply what you’ve learned, it encourages you to continue studying the language and even makes you want to study other ones.” “We also used a lot of nonverbal communication to get our point across,” Hailey added. “They really respected that we tried so hard to communicate with them.” The group remembered phrases and songs they learned from their teachers in the district and used them to connect with the residents.

Nine Massapequa High School students went on a life- changing mission this past summer to improve the lives of impoverished community members in Guatemala. What they gained, they said, was a new perspective on what happiness means and a desire to continue studying Spanish to help others on a global level. The students — freshman Lily Bastian, juniors Julianna Hartmann, Kyle Korwan, Hailey Korwan, Andrew Lazina, Elizabeth Murphy, Natalie Murphy and Lili Simonetti, and senior Laine Thelian — went on the trip with about 50 members of their church youth group, equipped with the Spanish skills they learned in the Massapequa School District and a great willingness to improve the lives of others. They worked hard to build a house, repair a soccer field, teach vacation bible school and fix an orphanage, while reaching out to the community to connect with its residents.

Weathering the Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are few things as unpredictable, and beyond our control, as Mother Nature. If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that hurricane season is not to be taken lightly. Gone are the days of “what are the odds” and “it’s never happened here” … turns out, “not always in your favor” and “now it has” are the answers to such rhetorical musings. Of course, most forecasts are still met with a healthy dose of skepticism, even in these parts of the region where that kind of cynicism resulted in some pretty substantial regrets not so long ago. Meteorologists’ predictions, coupled with dueling “models” mapping

out the potential track of various storm systems does not an exact science make. As a result, the tendency is to ignore such warnings until the eleventh hour and simply hope for the best. The same goes for blizzards, heat advisories … any natural occurrence that might interfere with our daily lives. How dare something as trivial as weather affect our schedules. Until it does. And we are completely unprepared. I will fully admit that I am guilty of such dismissiveness as well. To me, unless I look outside and see it for myself, it’s not reliable information. I don’t see the point in inciting mass hysteria among the public based on a “hunch,” a “chance of” whatever. Show me rain and

wind and sleet and snow and blazing temperatures – maybe I’ll be convinced. Stupid? Sure, in those rare, extreme cases when the forecast is 100% accurate. But you won’t see me rushing out to buy milk and eggs and bread on a whim. Because guess what? When the power goes out, no one’s making French toast. The way I see it, owning a shovel, keeping your gas tank above empty and stocking a few bottles of water and some nonperishables isn’t the kind of thing that should be necessitated by an emergency warning. It’s just practical common sense. If you need a meteorologist to instruct you in those types of preparations, well then, the weather isn’t your biggest concern.

BOCCE BALL CLASSIC - The Kiwanis Club of Massapequa held its 4th Annual Memorial Bocce Ball Classic. The event featured delicious food and drinks, live music and bocce ball competitions. Despite the festive atmosphere, the tournament is played in memory of former member Anthony Tesoriero. Proceeds from the event are given to the Anthony Tesoriero Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is awarded to a Massapequa High School student that is a member of the Key Club and has an interest in pursuing a career in music. The club assists Kiwanis in performing acts of service in their community, such as cleaning up parks, collecting clothing and organizing food drives.

KICKOFF SPECTACULAR - The Massapequa Mustangs Youth Football Organization, along with the Massapequa Moms Group, held their “Kickoff Spectacular” at John J. Burns Park. Admission for the entire event was free for the families of the Massapequas and the neighboring towns. Association with the Mustangs was not mandatory, all were welcome. There were bounce houses, obstacle courses, games, food vendors, craft vendors, DJ music and performances from dance and cheerleading squads. Many residents enjoyed a free night out with their families.

Two weeks remain for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The last day to submit claims is Thursday, October 15th, 2015. NFIP-certified insurance adjusters are currently reviewing more than 15,000 Sandy flood claims, looking for any instance of underpayment. Where warranted by the review, additional payments are being made to policyholders who suffered losses from the storm. “If you believe your Sandy flood claim was underpaid for any reason, we are ready, willing and able to take another look. But we can’t review your claim unless you ask us to,” said Roy Wright, FEMA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for

Insurance and Mitigation. Getting started is as simple as making a telephone call. Policyholders can contact the NFIP’s Hurricane Sandy claims center at 866.337.4262 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), Monday through Friday, to request a review. To be eligible for the review, policyholders must have experienced flood damage between October 27th, 2012 and November 6th, 2012 as a result of Hurricane Sandy and must have had an active NFIP flood policy at the time of the loss. When policyholders call, it is helpful if they have available as much information as possible, including the name on the policy, the address of the damaged property and the ten-digit NFIP policy number that was in effect at the time of the loss.

Policyholders will be asked a series of questions to determine whether they qualify for the review. If qualified, they will be called by an adjuster to begin the review. The timing of this call may be affected by the volume of requests. Most reviews can generally be concluded within 90 days. Policyholders also can go online to www.fema. gov/hurricane-sandy-

Massapequa High School senior David Marques was named a Semifinalist in the 61st Annual National Merit® Scholarship Program, placing him among the top one percent of the brightest and most promising high school seniors across the country. Four additional high-achieving seniors, Miranda McLeer, Danielle Altamura, Sean Fiola and Jake Sabia, were recognized with Letters of Commendation. To qualify for these honors, students must attain exceptional scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying

Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and meet other program requirements. About 16,000 of the highestscoring students, or less than one percent in the country, become Semifinalists out of 1.5 million test takers nationwide. Most of them will be selected as Finalists after fulfilling more rigorous requirements over the next few months. Finalists, who are notified in February, are contenders for more than 74,000 scholarships worth more than $32 million that are awarded in the spring. About 34,000 highscoring students were recognized with Letters

Donation Received The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $5,265 donation from 115 friends and family members in memory of Daniel Grym, 19, of Bellmore, who passed away from the effects of a heroin and benzodiazepine overdose on January 8th, 2015. Daniel’s older brother and only sibling, Kenny, passed away 5 years ago on the same date from a heroin overdose. With the heroin and opiate crisis raging, the demand for LICADD’s services has increased exponentially. Significant price drops in the street price of heroin on Long Island, have increased the number of young people who are using the drug. Calls to LICADD’s hotlines and requests for services mirror these increasing trends and beyond the sheer rise in numbers of

young people and their families seeking heroin addiction treatment services, the rapid progression from snorting to injecting the drug is startling and obviously increases the potential health consequences for users. This significant donation assists the Long Island community by providing additional services for families in desperate need of LICADD’s services. A counseling office in LICADD’s Executive offices in Mineola will be named in memory of Daniel at a private dedication with close family and friends. “We are very grateful to LICADD for the good work they offer. The family and friends of Daniel hope that this dedication will help to raise awareness about the dangers of heroin and direct individuals to LICADD for help.” says
